Why do people collect putters?

Kansas King

Recommended Posts

I've always understood a machined block of steel looks nice. However, I have never understood people's affection for collecting mass produced putters, most notably Scotty Camerons. I understand if someone collects one-off putters or special custom putters. However, I don't understand why people like collecting mass produced CNC machined putters. There is nothing unique about them, the premium for some of them is insane, and they really haven't changed for a few decades. I would be curious to hear why some of you collect putters like Scottys or Bettinardis. I'm legitimately trying to have some understanding.

Why do people collect anything?

Every manufacturer has their take on a design. They feel different. They are made from different materials. Milling patterns. The shaping of the heel, toes, bumpers, hosels, inserts are different.

So while to some putters look the same, there can be subtle differences.

As an anti-hoarder I don't see the point, but I guess people do it for the same reasons people collect anything else (art, sports memorabilia, comics/cards, etc.)...

I know people do, but I don’t know anyone personally who does. I insist of getting rid of any club(s) I replace, including putters. All but one of my 20 odd golf buddies use putters that look ancient, most are. But as noted above, we all have things we appreciate, and some are collectors too - nothing wrong with that.

I have a buddy that has a putting green in his shop and has a rack of about 70 putters on the wall....most of which he has used as his gamer at one time or another.

Because it’s a hobby within a hobby and also gives the opportunity to swap out a putter for a different look or feel.

I'm with you on this one. If I find one that works it stays in the bag. In 32 years I've probably only had 5 putters. Current gamer came out in 2016 and still happy with it.

Collecting anything can look odd to those who don’t collect. I don’t collect putters, although I do currently have three, but I will admit that it has crossed my mind for no truly explainable reason. I do collect other things though, just because I enjoy it.

While I dont collect high dollar putters, i do currently own 22 putters (down from 45...ebay is my friend). Why?

Because I like putters. One is from my first tournament prize winnings in 1984ish, Ray Cook mallet. A bunch of Pings, an STX because its unusual, several old putters that I couldnt sell due to age and technology.

And finally, because I can. They dont eat anything and take up very little space. So when my current gamer misbehaves, I bring out a replacement.

Certain putters fit my eye so to speak. I have certain style putters such as a TP Mills #12 or Wilson Staff 8802/MacGregor IMG that I grew up playing with. So I am attracted to those classics but also like what Bettanardi has done with face milling.

I like the new Vault/Dalehead Ping Ansers models that have been released in last few years. I have many boutique putters not well known but they are new/modified versions of past brands/models with a touch of modern(face mill patterns or inserts).

I don't know I guess collecting putters for me is like someone collecting certain art. It just fits ones eye. At least it does for me and brings back great memories from when I learned the game.

I've never collected putters (or other clubs for that matter) as I've generally had a 1-in, 1-out policy. But since I've started making them I have a few different ones, 2 of which I've not even used on the course yet..

It's a little known fact that putters ability to make putts runs out at the end of each year. They then must be recharged for at least 7-years before their ability to make putts returns. All least that's what I tell my wife each time a buy a new putter!😆

Beat me to it.  I was thinking about license plates and tractor seats.

Heck, Egon Spengler collects "spores, mold and fungi."  (Movie reference for those of you that might not know.)

I understand it because we all collect a bunch of weird stuff in a way or keep old stuff that should be sold or thrown into the garbage. My main concern about collecting putter for me is like collecting ferrari, I wish I had the money to do it...

It always comes down to the means.  Ian Poulter collects Ferraris.  Literally.  Because it is within his means.

Not knocking the hobby, to each his own, but I could never do it.  After 1-2 rounds of bad putting it would be too tempting not to fiddle with something else rather than stick to the gamer (assuming properly fit) and fix the indian rather than the arrow.

Only "extra" putter I have lying around is my Dad's...he passed away about 8 years ago, and had built himself a putter with Golfsmith components.  It's an awful putter really, but obviously plenty of sentimental value.

I have dabbled into collection putters.  I have owned at least 50 putters, maybe approaching 60, during my 35 years of playing golf.  Of course not all at one time.  I have owned at various times 15 different Cameron putters, about half were limited edition putters and the rest were OTRs.  I even owned the same limited edition Cameron two different times but now have no Cameron putters in my feeble collection.  Many putters have come and gone as most were intended to be gamers but just didn't pan out.  About the mid 2000s I decided to start collecting and built up a small Cameron collection (about 4 or 5 putters including 2 limited editions). I had 3 or 4 TP Mills putters, including 2 custom made putters from David Mills.  I had a couple old Wilson putters (original 8813 and a refinished Designed by Arnold Palmer), a couple more Wilson putters (nothing of great value but sentimental to me), a couple Byron Morgan putters, then a few more Byrons, a couple/three old Cleveland Classic blades (Designed by Ben Crenshaw, Corey Pavin US Open, Designed by Cleveland Classic, and Designed by Cleveland Classic copper) and a Ping Zing 85025 black band putter.  In total my "putter collection" amassed around 20-25 putters.  Now I have two Byron Morgan putters, one TP Mills (David Mills custom), the Designed by Cleveland Classic copper. the two old Wilson sentimental putters and the Ping Zing.   My interest in collecting putters has waned but I do collect persimmon woods, notably the classic MacGregors from the 1950s.  These fit in my oversized PowerBilt display staff bag in my office, as does my Cleveland Classic copper blade and my TP Mills.  I have a friend who is probably one of the world's preeminent collectors of Scott Cameron putters.  His collection is simply one of the very best and he still collects.  Why?  Because he wants to.  He has the means to collect so good for him.  He is also one of the foremost authorities of Scotty Cameron putters there is, a true expert.

Why do people collect anything?  Nostalgia, appreciation to the craft, who knows.  For those that collect putters, keep collecting.  For those who don't enjoy what you do.

I've never understood collecting *anything*, to be honest. Don't see the value in spending money on something then putting it away on a shelf.

My putter collection is currently at 4. That's probably 2 too many, but it came in handy when the after-prom committee set up a putting green a few years ago but forgot to get some putters 🤣

Why do people collect stamps, coins, comic books, artwork, dolls, matchbooks, postcards, baseball cards, cars, shoes, cast iron pans, antiques, furniture, civil war memorabilia, Native American artifacts, old fishing rods and reels.

You name it and there is probably someone somewhere that collects it.

I believe that the reason people collect certain things is that it brings them some kind of joy, triggers nostalgia, and fills a hole in their life in some way that helps them to focus their attention intently on one aspect for a while.  Could be it is their hobby.

Maybe they are just hoarders or indiscriminate collectors.  Perhaps they are serial collectors, meaning they collect one type of thing for a while before moving on to another category, etc.  It could be they were very deprived early in life and after achieving some level of financial success they are making up for earlier deprivations.  Maybe it is their business or they see the items as investments to be traded at a later date.

Whatever the reason I am glad that there are some people out there that value and cherish these things.  It preserves these items and encourages the artistry, craftsmanship and innovation of those that produce them.

The only time I don’t like collectors is when they are bidding against me on the same item on EBay. 😉

Very true.  I just think its silly to pay $100 or more for a headcover, let alone pay hundreds for some rare headcover.  I do have a high end Cameron headcover from back when the PGA Championship was at Kohler a number of years ago (the one that looks like yellow Swiss cheese) but I only paid like $75 for it.

There’s lots of things that don’t make sense to people to spend money on. People spend thousands of dollars on retro jordan sneakers that they won’t wear ever.

People spend tons of money to hang a painting on their wall from some artist.

Different things have different meanings and values to different people. For some it’s the thrill of the chase for a certain object.

I never get why people care or comment on what or how others spend their money.
