How Often Do You Replace Your Golf Bag?

I have SunMountain C130 that's about 5 years old, I'm itching to get a new one, but hard to justify, the thing has just held up too damn well 🙂   I mean, with a good cleaning, it practically looks new.

I've never worn a bag out.  I tend to buy a new, matching staff bag whenever I buy a new set of irons.  I get new irons about every 3-4 years, so I have a garage full of nice staff bags and matching irons.  I do have a couple carry bags that don't get much use, normally use them when travelling or when going to a club that has caddies (they appreciate it).  I bet I have 20 like new bags in my garage...

I've changed once in 10 years, maybe 4 years ago, when the bag I got when I took up the game fell apart. I do have 2 "spare" bags, one an old Ping that holds my backup/spare clubs, and a 14-way cart bag my father gave to my son but he doesn't use so that may end up being another storage bag.

Cart bags usually lasted me 8 or 9 seasons. I've had 2 that were crushed on flights and were replaced sooner. Stand bags seem to have issues after about 5 or 6 seasons. After 45 some years of golf I know I've bought fewer than 7 or 8 bags.

When they wear out.  I have four Titleist bags; 2 tour mid size bags ( black/white, black), and one lightweight carry bag that I take when I fly to an event (it fits in my SKB hardcase travel bag) and on new cart 14 bag.  Unfortunatelay, due to health issues can no longer walk and play golf.  Dr say take a cart and have fun.  When I drive to a TT event I take my black mid size bag which also has a Team Titleist Ambassador bad tag on it.  I had a Titleist Folds of Honor Tour bag but it has a new home in N Carolina with a retired marine major friend of mine.     IMG_5343.JPG

How often everyone chooses to replace clubs has been thoroughly discussed, but how about your bag? I just bought a new bag for functional reasons, first time I’ve replaced a bag (after only 4 years) that wasn’t simply beyond hope. The one before was about 30 years old, it was falling apart. All of my golf buds have bags that look older than they do, even when they buy new clubs they keep the old bag.

Do you replace your bag whenever just because, or when the old one becomes embarrassing?

The warden asked me if I could trade in my old bag as it’s in decent condition? 😆

8-12 years, I have 1 carry bag and 1 cart bag.

Replaced my 10+ year old stand bag last summer.  Bag before that lasted about 9 years.  My replacement event is usually triggered by the internal dividers breaking down which winds up having club shafts getting twisted up when carrying or the top cuff of the bag wearing out.  Have had good luck with zippers and the stand mechanisms.

I actually have 3 right now, which one I use depends on if I'm walking or riding. As for replacement, when the bag gets to a point where it is no longer in what I consider "user" condition, you know zippers not working smoothly, holes worn into them, tears on the side or the clubs just don't slide in like they used to then I replace it, Sometimes someone at work is getting started in golf, I'll give them one of my bags to help them out, and it gives me a good excuse to get a new one!!

Chris

Since I build my own clubs, I replace the bag when I build a new set.

For me it is all about the zippers.  When the zippers start to break the bag gets replaced.  My current bag is on 4 years it has a magnetic ball pocket and that is the pocket that I keep most of the often used stuff in like the rangefinder.

I struggling to remember when I bought a new bag. It may have been in 2015. It replaced a TaylorMade Durango bag that was jus a bit too small for my liking. I have a TaylorMade Supreme Hybrid Stand Bag and has held up extremely well. It’s sits really nicely on my Clicgear cart.

I replace mine about every five years as they are looking pretty sad by then. This is my third Sun Mountain C-130 that I use mostly with a push cart twice a week at minimum. I also have a Sun Mountain stand bag that I keep in my SKB hard travel case for use on trips. It must be 12-15 years old, but has only been used 15-20 times.

I was looking for a bag that would work well on a riding cart and a pushcart as I’m almost 50:50, most bags are designed for one or the other. I was going to buy a Ping Traverse as it looked like the best option on paper. Fortunately I went to a GG and put some clubs and a putter in a Traverse in both orientations and set it on a pushcart. Realized I wasn’t going to be happy with the (lack of a separate) putter well, and bought a Ping Pioneer instead - a better solution for me. I hope to keep it until it falls apart. And it has a couple welcome added features (magnetic pocket for balls and rangefinder, and a bigger insulated pocket).

The MGS Most Wanted led me to look at Ping bags BTW.

I had an Ogio Silencer and was perfectly happy with it on a riding cart, not so on a pushcart. And the tracks at the bottom that grip the clubs are overly fussy, just got tired of that feature. Great on paper, not as much in reality. Sad to retire it after only 4 years.

I like the maxfli carry cart stand bag and the price is beautiful. Don’t like paying a lot of extra money for a name

About every 5 years

Started playing late in life, but as I got older I found that golf is a much better activity than a lot of things old folks get into, plus I meet some of the nicest most interesting people!

I have the Callaway ORG14 3 years now and only carry 13 clubs and it is destroying my putter grip. There are new bags that have 15 dividers and I will be buying one shortly ! I have mid-sized grips so this is a problem. Anyone suggest a good 15 bag ?

13 years ago I bought a Titleist bag at a golf shop tent sale. It was priced right and maybe it was a year old model and it didn't sell. I snatched it up because it was a great deal as it was pretty inexpensive for a top of the line golf bag, it had great pockets with plenty of room, and it had 5 openings for all the clubs you need. Sadly, the top fabric finally wore out and I had to replace it. Today's bags are made with space-age materials that are light in weight but most have the dedicated club openings on top which I don't like and the storage pockets just aren't placed in the right manner as my old Titleist bag. My new bag is exactly that, new, but I'd take my old Titleist bag back in a heartbeat if it could be repaired. In the grand scheme of things I'm just thankful to be playing such a great sport.

I have two bags. Staff bag when I ride in a cart and a carry/stand bag when i walk.  Since I walk more than ride I tend to buy a new strap every couple of years.  I also make sure when i walk that I don't have have more than 6 balls and clubs as the weight is what has caused straps to break.

No gimme's, No breakfast balls!  Let's play!

I like the screen name vagabon. That describes me to a tee. and believe it or not I have a Vagabon brand carry bag. Really light and roomy for what it is. Now if I used it on a cart it would tear up in the drop of a hat because it is designed as a light carry bag

I still have 2 of my Titleist Mini Staff bags from my mini tour days--- One is beat to crap and the other one is nearly new. They are an older generation from yours by quite a few years. I actually like the not beat up one. But in recent years I use my old Hoofer due to my back injury and our range and short game area versus the parking lot are quite spread out. Plus and this is just me I like keeping a low profile these days. I only had a ball deal through our golf shop and played what clubs I wanted to. Now I somewhat got a kick out of the tourists looking surprised when checking out my bag. I think they suspected a set of new shiny 690 MBs or something but they got a look at banged up rusty lead taped Macgregors and rusty banged up 588s. LOL they look depressed. But seriously my old Mini staff is the most user friendly when using on a cart it is set up well. But like you I am not able to walk. But even though the Hoofer is small it sets up well for me for my practice and cart use, Besides I do not carry much stuff anyhow.
