The Masters - 2021

The two words that, too even those who do not follow or play the game, are so recognizable. The Masters is most often stated as the greatest show in sports... absolutely no argument from this fan.  For me, this tournament immediately brings up memories of my Dad and us watching the event, first on a b&w, then a color TV .  While the re-scheduled 2020 event was an ok change, IMHO there is nothing like the April dates for the seasons first major in Augusta, GA. 

Where does this event stand among your sports viewing favorites? What are your personal memories of this event? Any predictions on who will be fitted for the green jacket?  I'm going with JT for the win but the surprise chaser will be Louis Oosthuizen.

The best week of the year for this guy!  

It is hard to pick against Jordan with his history there and how he has been playing lately.  I'm also gonna pick JT but something tells me Victor Perez may shock the masses on Sunday. 

Gonna be an awesome 5 days!  Yes I included the Par 3 contest!

Agree 100% with this.  Jordan has been playing some pretty dang good golf the past few months.  No reason to think that won’t continue next week.

This is my favorite sporting event of all. Been waiting on this one. And with Jordan Spieth winning in TX today, lots of additional energy (not that Masters doesn't produce enough as is) in the buildup to tournamentstart.

The closest feeling sports wise i can equate my excitement for the Masters is when I am getting ready for my favorite college football team start its season.

I didn't take up golf until 1987 and golf on TV was something my father forced us to watch on Sunday afternoons. My first memory of the Masters is Jack winning in '86 and my favorite memory is the first time I got to attend in person 10 years later. I would say the Super Bowl is my favorite sporting event, but the Masters is a close second. I tend to watch more coverage of the event than other golf tournament through out the year. Though I've never played the course, I instantly recognize every hole when they flash on TV. As to who will win, Jordan has been playing great and would love to see him get his 2nd green jacket, but I don't believe he's exercised his demons from #12 yet, yesterday's loose iron shot on his final swing shows he's still got some scars. I'm gonna go with JT.

The Masters is a very close second to the Ryder Cup for me as far as favorite sporting events.  My Dad got into golf in 1992, and consequently so I did since he had it on the tube whenever he could, so I recall very fondly watching Freddy win the Masters.  I remember thinking "what's the big deal" when Ken Venturi went on and on about Fred's ball staying up and not rolling back into Rae's Creek...after watching the Masters since then I realize just how crazy that was that it did stay up!

As for picks this year, everyone knows I'm a big Spieth fan and I'm picking him to win again this year.  I recognize how hard it is statistically to win back to back, but most don't seem to recognize how wide Augusta is and how it's a second shot course...you can get away with some loose drives there, it's about wedges and can you putt those greens.  To me that screams Jordan all day.

That said, nobody seems to be talking about it this year, but if Bryson has a positive first and second round, look out.

Rick, you didn't really think Mr. Major's was going to miss this event. Hell, even a 70% healthy Koepka could (and very well may) finish in the top 20.

I wasn’t sure but glad he’s there. I think he puts a little pressure on some of the players.

The Masters is my favorite sporting event every year, attending in 1989 only elevated my admiration for the event even more. Everyone who loves golf should try to attend just once in person ***, TV just can’t do the course topography, atmosphere or simple beauty justice, it’s incredible. I love the Super Bowl, the Olympics and the America’s Cup, but The Masters is the pinnacle for me. As long as Garcia, DeChambeau of Holmes don’t win, I’m happy for any pro who’s able to pull it off. If I had to pick one person, I’d like to see Thomas get a Masters win.

A couple of interesting story lines in todays coverage.  First was the update on Koepka, his knee surgery and that speculation whether he's really ready play.  Watching him swing on the range, he sure looked fine but 4 full days of play will test it.  Of course he seems to thrive on these events and the doubt me and I'll prove you wrong angle. Plus, having DJ put his green jacket on would be a bonus given their unofficial tepid relationship.

The second story was one I was unaware of. It was about Bubba, his anxiety over his game, weight loss, and thoughts about quitting the game.  He brought up social media, its role in this, and how he internalized the negative comments.  Most know Bubba is a pretty sensitive person and I can understand how a constant barrage of negative press could get to him.  Easy to say ignore it and don't let it get to you but damn hard to do (I believe) at this level.  I've always liked Bubba and that he was never formally coached... just a self taught gun slinger whose ball flight dazzles.

I like Bubba and would like to see him become a contender at all tour events. I'll root for him after Speith since my fav - Rickie won't be there.

Me too.  He's among my favorite players (I have a rather long list ) and have always liked him.  I get the sense that Bubba dosen't feel like he belongs in the inner circle.  He doubts himself and his abilities. I think we fans so often overlook, or simply don't consider the personal/psychological side of playing at this level. I'm always impressed by the way these guys handle themselves, particularly the barely 20 year old's.  I cannot imagine myself at that age being that way.  I suspect the KF and other developmental tours are partly responsible for grooming them.

I liked the Masters more when I lived up North. It generally marked the start of the golf season.

It’s a brilliant format on a great and familiar course that often produces a tremendous finish. The limited field almost insured big names on the leaderboard.

I generally don’t watch the final round because our good weather is coming to a close and I’d rather play myself than watch. This year I have a wedding on Saturday so I will miss that round, also.

I think Paul Casey is primed to make some noise.

I showed-up to a public course in Baton Rouge yesterday, a course I’ve played since grad school, and the parking lot was PACKED, and when I came around the corner, the driving range was packed too! I was thinking that maybe they had an outing since I’ve never seen it like this before. When I went inside and asked about the outing, and they said no, the Pro said, “It’s Masters week! For most it’s the official start of golf season!” When I teed off at 4:15 they already had 216 groups for the day, with the record being 226! Unreal....

Masters week!!!!!

And the 'talking heads' said golf was on a decline! Even more indicative is the order data from the OEM's and how far behind they are.

I'm curious what you don't like about Faldo, he has more credibility than Nantz or Romo? I can't stand Romo as an NFL commentator, but he seems to have a following.

Hoping Rory gets his major slam. If he doesn’t another one for Sergio would be fine. After all Bubba has gone thru with his physical and mental health and how he’s been giving back to the game I wouldn’t mind seeing him get another.

With Rickie out I’m pulling for Morikawa this week.

The interesting story is going to be Bryson. Still not a fan of him but like that he’s going about things his way and will be interesting to see his strategy and if he can kind of break thru at the course and crack the top even if he doesn’t win

It would be great to see Spieth win again, but back-to-back is so tough. Seeing Rory win would be great, and I love a first time major champion. I have a feeling about Rahm this week. Doesn't it seem like he's always right there?
