RBC Heritage - 2021

Well now, with the years first major fresh in their rearview mirrors, the field turns its attention to the RBC Heritage at Hilton Head, SC.  No, not a green jacket by any stretch, but one still coveted.  Even El Tigre does not have one of these in the closet (yes, I know, he's only played it once 🙂). I just noticed that Boeing is now a major sponsor.  I was so glad when our corporate brass finally jumped into the PGA Tour with the Boeing Classic (Champions Tour) event at TPC Snoqualmie in 2005... but I digress.

So who will slip on the stunning plaid jacket this year?  With Webb one of my FTx anchormen and the defending champion, I'm going with a repeat 👍.  Who ya got?

I was gonna say Zalatoris, but I think he's a little drained from such a huge week at the Masters. I'm gonna go Stewart Cink. He played well at Augusta, and cruised to an easy Top 12 finish there so probably didn't fray his nerves too much.

I can see a repeat. Probably time. Last was Boo Weekly 07/08 I think. Another question will it take a playoff? Read 5 of last 11 years went to playoff. And there is 500 FedEx pts on line. Also read 37 from Masters field are playing. I smell a birdie fest :) . Will be good tournament.

I'm a bit more excited to watch this tournament this year.  First off, a surprising amount of bigger names and players that are in good form.  Secondly, I will be playing Harbour Town for the first time this June so want to garner what I can and see where the pros are hitting it and compare it to myself in a few months.

Hard to argue against Webb Simpson, but I got a hunch that they need to watch out for Brian Harmon...he’s been on a roll and that’s definitely a shot makers golf course

Have fun. Playing that course is like playing almost any tree lined course in new england. Small greens. The average green size is 3,700 sq feet at HT. Where the more average green size for most courses on tour is around 6,600 sq feet.  🙂 (Some 6400sq feet at Augusta avg)

HT requires precision to navigate around strategically planted/placed mossy trees, to only arrive at some of the smallest greens on tour, which is why many tour pros skip this event (using the masters as an excuse I feel... going from greens that are 2x the size to small, missing greens will skew their stats....)

I'm there every Oct for a few weeks.

Thanks.   Something about the tree lined courses just do it for me.  Especially when it calls for a certain shot shape.  Just a cool view from the tee in my opinion.

I played Atlantic Dunes last year, which is definitely a different layout, but gives some of that feel I think.  Definitely more open however.

A bit of a wrench thrown in.  I found out that they will be aerating the greens 2 days before we get there.  I'm debating if I want to spend that kind of money on HT this year.

The other course I'm playing is Palmetto Dunes - RTJ Ocean Course so looking forward to that one.

I'm kind of with you for a bit of a different reason.  In past years, I pretty much ignored this tournament as I was suffering from Post Masters Depression 🙂  But last year when it was moved to be one of the first few tournaments after the restart, I was so happy to see any golf i watched every minute of it, and immediately fell in love with the course.  So much so, I began putting a bug in all my friends ears that we needed to make a trip there for at least 3 to 4 days.   So far it hasn't happened, but I'll keep pushing for it.   I've hear the condos/villas on site are very nice.

Have fun, and definitely share some pics and stories of how it goes.

As for winner, I was going to say Sergio even before yesterday started, he seems to be on a pretty good roll right now, and this style course suits his game very well.

Watching the replay of Morikawa's round I can't help but think he could have gone at least 4 shots lower. Had several short putts that just missed. He is so talented and it'll be really scary when he starts getting those to drop.

You guys probably knew this, but just in case you're wondering what happened to the canary yellow jackets:

When someone wins the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links, they’ll not only get a trophy and a boat load of money (nautical joke), they’ll also slip on a plaid jacket. Since the Hilton Head Island tournament almost always falls the week after the Masters on the PGA Tour schedule, golf fans probably figure there’s some jacket envy of the Masters green jacket. However, the history of the plaid jacket at the RBC Heritage suggests that’s not the case.

When organizers started the tournament over Thanksgiving weekend in 1969, there were no plaid jackets. Rather, tournament officials wore canary yellow jackets. That was changed a few years later, when organizers were inspired by the famous 1790 golf print of Sir William Innes, who was captain of the Society of Golfers at Blackheath in Scotland, playing in a tartan jacket. Innes’ image was also included in the tournament logo until RBC became the tournament title sponsor in 2012.

Ultimately, organizers decided to use the Royal Stewart tartan as the base for their tournament-specific tartan, removing a yellow bar to make it their own. That tartan, now called Heritage Plaid, is now the tartan design on the jackets given to tournament winners.

However, the winner wasn’t always given the tartan jacket at the trophy presentation. For a number of years, the winner was given a red jacket once they won, then they were given their plaid jacket in the next year’s opening ceremony.

You’ll enjoy it. It’s always fun to play on courses that the Pros have.
I played it maybe 15 years ago and it was tight, smallish greens and from what I remember more water than you see on TV.
Have fun.

Does Stewart have one more solid round in the tank?  It's looking like it will take a collapse on his part or a really low round from one of the chasers to overtake him.
