Golfspy_CG2
I am one that always looking back, often times at the weirdest of things...just a week or so ago, I said to my Fiance, it was 3 months ago today that I ended up in the hospital with COVID. Or more enjoyable, I'll look back and say, It was 5 years ago this week that I got to go on the great Whistling Straits trip. I love reading the timeline scroll on The Golf Channel and ESPN where they say On this Day in XXXX such and such did XYZ. So in that vein we'll use this thread for us all to share our own personal On this Day..... memories, or post an interesting one about a major event anniversary. It was On this Day in 1997 Tiger won his first Major Championship at The Masters. While we all know that, what I couldn't have told you is who finished 2nd that year. It was Tom Kite by 12 shots. What a great moment in sports history that was. Hard to believe it was 24 years ago, there are those of you on this site...probably even reading this, that weren't alive then. Wow! Hopefully this thread will have something interesting posted everyday. Either you'll share a great personal memory with us, or we'll look back on a memorable sports moment! Golfspy_CG2
In 2002 Tiger won the Masters for the 2nd year in a row. He finished -12, three strokes ahead of Retief Goosen and four strokes ahead of Phil Mickelson. He became only the third player to win back to back Masters. Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo are the other two. rkj427
Not a golf related event, but a historical event On this day, April 14 in 1912................................... The largest ocean liner in service at the time, Titanic had an estimated 2,224 people on board when she struck an iceberg at around 23:40 (ship's time) on Sunday, 14 April 1912. Her sinking two hours and forty minutes later at 02:20 (ship's time; 05:18 GMT) on Monday, 15 April, resulted in the deaths of more than 1,500 people, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in history. Titanic received six warnings of sea ice on 14 April but was travelling about 22 knots when her lookouts sighted the iceberg. Unable to turn quickly enough, the ship suffered a glancing blow that buckled her starboard side and opened six of her sixteen compartments to the sea (the forepeak, all three holds, and boiler rooms 5 and 6). Titanic had been designed to stay afloat with four of her forward compartments flooded but no more, and the crew soon realised that the ship would sink. They used distress flares and radio (wireless) messages to attract help as the passengers were put into lifeboats. In accordance with existing practice, Titanic's lifeboat system was designed to ferry passengers to nearby rescue vessels, not to hold everyone on board simultaneously; therefore, with the ship sinking rapidly and help still hours away, there was no safe refuge for many of the passengers and crew with only 20 lifeboats, including 4 collapsible lifeboats. Poor management of the evacuation meant many boats were launched before they were completely full. Titanic sank with over a thousand passengers and crew still on board. Almost all of those who jumped or fell into the water drowned or died within minutes due to the effects of cold shock and incapacitation. RMS Carpathia arrived about an hour and a half after the sinking and rescued all of the survivors by 09:15 on 15 April, some nine and a half hours after the collision. Kenny B
On this day in 1968... Roberto De Vicenzo made a birdie on the par-4 17th hole at The Masters, but playing partner Tommy Aaron entered a 4 instead of a 3 on the scorecard. Roberto didn't check it and signed for a higher score, which according to the Rules of Golf had to stand. He would have tied Bob Goalby and been in an 18-hole playoff the next day. De Vicenzo was quoted as saying "What a stupid I am!" Must have been where Phil got his "I am such an idiot!"
