Kenny B Posted May 19, 2023 Share Posted May 19, 2023 On this day in 1980 Mt. St. Helens made an ash of herself. It was a Sunday morning and I was mowing my lawn. The sky darkened and ash started falling. Streetlights came on. Cars traveling to/from Spokane to the Tri-Cities had to follow a State Patrol car. Ash got into every crevice of a vehicle. People had to clean out the ash from behind the gas cap door to remove the cap. I thought about this today as I was driving home from central Oregon with some of the most beautiful mountain peaks in view. I will be posting soon in a new thread. This bombing marked the first use of a nuclear weapon as a weapon of war to hasten the end of the war. The consequences were devastating. Tens of thousands died instantly, countless more suffered horrific burns and deformities, and the city was largely reduced to rubble. In total, there were 70,000 to 135,000 fatalities due to the bombing of Hiroshima.
