Best Car to Carry Your Clubs?

Recommended Posts

A number of years ago I was living in Ireland for a few months and decided to take a short trip to St. Andrews.  Made car rental reservation with an outfit at Edinburgh airport and said, yes, a Ford car would be acceptable.  Upon arrival I discovered that the reservation agent had said Ford Ka not Ford car.  Upshot was that my clubs (in a Sun Mountain carry bag) had to ride at angle in the back seat because trunk was too small!  Like others have posted, I always take my clubs and push cart with when looking for a new car — odd looks from salespeople but golfers among them instantly understand.

A side note:  was lucky enough to only wait 30 minutes as a walk-up single to get on the Old Course, and Carnoustie is the hardest course I’ve ever played.

Late to this thread, but once I saw it I had to share. Any car that includes golf bags in the owner's manual 😂

From my 2018 Mazda 3 manual:

We recently added a 2021 Mazda 3 to the stable. Should be same manual, no? I need to go check.

I prefer a nice sporty hatchback or compact AWD wagon for both transporting my golf clubs (and those of at least two of my golfing buddies) and for my musical instruments and band gear (I am a bass guitarist).  I’ve driven this car from NJ/PA to Myrtle beach with two golfers and their gear for a week-long golf trip, and it was VERY comfortable, plus it held our bags/suitcases, snacks, cooler, and provisions …. and the other guy was 6’5” tall and about 275 lbs.

I looked at new Audi a couple of years ago.  When I pulled into the dealership I parked next to the car I wanted.  Immediately the salesman came running out (like they always do).  I asked him to open the trunk.  I opened mine and pulled out my clubs and push cart.  And placed them into the dealership's Audi.  Salesman kept saying, "Be careful, be careful."  I told him if they fit I'd buy the car.  I did.

This will get it done nicely.  It will carry your clubs, the clubs of the rest of your 4some and seat them in comfort on the way to your golf destination with no need to adjust front driver seat or passenger seat for leg room.

I have 2-

I echo everyone who responded with some kind of truck. My truck bed easily swallows my wife and my bags and electronic trolleys. With room to go on golf trips with multiple bags, coolers, whatever.

Haven't seen anyone mention a golf cart, but I haven't read all the responses.

Same thing.  I carried my golf clubs when I shopped for cars. But really, you should narrow it down for other items in the category and then test out those.  I knew I wanted a mid-size SUV, not any kind of sedan.

So it depends on how you golf?  Always walk, always ride, push cart?

I have 2016 ford explorer and works pretty well.  I have clubs, push cart, and one of those trunk caddies that hold shoes and balls and stuff.  Works pretty good.  None of the mid-size SUVs that I found would fit clubs fore and aft perfectly.  Honda Pilot is pretty big in the midsize category, but I didn't like the cockpit and other features.

For golf trips, there is no better car than Suburban.  Four sets of clubs and luggage all fit well in the back and good seating for 4 guys.

Loved my "practical" 2000 C5 Corvette coupe which easily gobbled up both mine and my wife's clubs under the hatch. The vette is gone now sadly 😪 - but I still have my 1979 Oldsmobile Holiday 88 2 door coupe that does the same plus luggage and at least one dead body! 😃 Luckily - when the Holiday is in storage - I have my 2019 Honda Ridgeline which others on this thread have touted.  Style and comfort all around.

My Mercedes C320 fits a bag nicely width-wise. Don't think the trunk will carry a pullcart and a bag. The trunk will also fit 6 bags of black mulch and four 12*12 pavers...don't ask on how I know 🤔...😁😅🤣. My 2019 Honda Odyssey can fit a whole golf team, lol.

Really, theres so many choices that its probably easier to say what cars ARENT great.

Having said that, my '15 Honda Accord does well.  You can put a golf bag in sideways and I could probably get 4 bags in the trunk pretty easily.  Really though, any SUV or car that is midsize or bigger is going to be pretty ideal for carrying golf clubs.

Mclaren

Played golf for over 50 years until my health and business calendar reduced my time to less then 5 rounds a year. Then 4 years ago I retired, changed my diet and lifestyle, lost 100 pounds and got back on the course. Its been a struggle but things are getting better.

I posted earlier but forgot to mention my car. 2015 Malibu. It would fit my clubs if it didn’t have the battery for the auto stop. I hate that feature but can’t bypass it. My previous car was a 2015 Impala that could fit clubs shoes, a pushcart and all my rain gear and still have room. Man I miss that car, but someone hit it while it was parked and totaled it.

Like others, both my personal vehicles were subject to a bag test to qualify. When I travel with my club glove travel bag I like to rent a Nissan Altima. The bag w/clubs fit left to right. The Sentra will do the same on a diagonal line. Parking at hotels in poorly lit lots, I prefer not to temp anyone by having exposed clubs on display. Malibu is/was another choice.
