Driver spin question

Recommended Posts

If my driver spin is 3000-3500, how much distance am I losing?  Should I get refit? Or is that close enough?  I feel like 2000-2300 is where you want to be?

3000-3500 is pretty high for driver spin at 114 mph swing speed. I assume you're hitting down with the driver to get that much spin with an 8.5° driver. A refitting would be a good idea, but it'd also be worth seeing how your spin changes hitting up on the ball. You might need a refit anyway changing from hitting down to hitting up, but you're definitely losing a considerable amount of distance with 3000-3500 spin at your club head speed.

If my driver spin is 3000-3500, how much distance am I losing?  Should I get refit? Or is that close enough?  I feel like 2000-2300 is where you want to be?

I actually was on trackman yesterday and I was also surprised it said up 2-3 degees. So confused. Missing on the heel side if anything but not extremely badly.

Was the fitting indoors? Trackman struggles with reading spin indoors. Every time the spin showed up in italics on the screen Trackman was estimating the spin and not reading the actual Spin

This is a thing. I’m usually around 2000-2200 with driver and indoors on track man I’m around 2900-3200 consistently. My swing speed is very comparable to the 114 mentioned by the OP

That's strange. Are you catching it low on the face too?

As others have mentioned, it could be an issue with Trackman indoors. If you can get on Trackman outdoors or on a GC Quad indoors, might be a good idea to get a more accurate picture of your spin rate.

3000-3500 spin at 2-3° up doesn't really make much sense, especially with an 8.5° driver so I don't think you're getting accurate spin numbers unfortunately.

Thank you for the Trackman indoors comments.  I have had higher spin numbers for my driver with a 2-3° attack angle indoors with a Trackman.  I will try it outside with the warmer weather.

I have attached some average numbers from the session Incase that offers any more clarity. I would say not hitting low on face. Mid height middle to heel side.

@Mctwist937 what is your shot shape?  Did you take a look at the side spin? Wondering if you are losing distance because of the ball spinning too much?

what golf ball are you using? Ball speed for 114mph as seems a bit low. Could also indicate off center strikes

My uneducated opinion.

For your ball speed and launch angle you should be getting more distance. Spin is about 1000 too high based on charts. your driver is the forgiving model so more spin. Nitpicking, I’d look at path; 7.6 in to out is pretty extreme especially if it is an average. Probably want to be closer to 3. Guessing you have a hard draw and snap hooks. If you did this you’d probably also launch higher which isn’t what you want. Would also look at drivers with more weight forward. You said middle UTI middle heel ball contact; probably want a little higher and slightly toe.

In summary my thoughts are that there are probably drivers that might get you better spin numbers.

Yeah, I'd say nearly 3300 spin is definitely costing you at least 10 yards of carry at 163 mph ball speed. I may be wrong but I believe the 915 series of Titleist drivers were very high spinning compared to their competitors, so that's not helping you very much for distance. The ball you play may also be factoring as well, but it's likely your driver that's a big issue. Your launch is pretty good for your ball speed but the spin is definitely too high. I think from a more optimal perspective, at 163 ball speed, 2300 to 2500 spin is probably where you want to be, so a new driver fitting might be your best bet. And maybe a few lessons to rein your path in. 7° in to out is pretty on the extreme side.

More than likely it is face contact. Do you know for sure where you are hitting it? At 114 your ball speed should be closer to 170.

If I am reading this right, you are 3 deg closed to your path. Do you struggle with a power fade or slice? Fix your face angle relative to path might help a lot

You are reading correct but the ball will hook and not slice. Face is pointing right which will start the ball to the right of target line. Since face is closed to the path it will bring the ball back to the left. There could be other influences but that is basically how the ball flight laws work.

His face is 2.5° closed to a 7° in to out path. That's a recipe for slinging draws/rope hooks.
