drills for better rotation

The trouble with trying to diagnose swing faults is that you can't see yourself swing. What you need to do is see a pro.  My experience has been that it's the best golf purchase I've ever made.

thanks for the suggestion. i’ve been seeing a coach for a while. my swing is night and day compared to what it was, but i opened myself up to some suggestions based on what i felt my last round out.

I have had pretty much all of the issues mentioned in this thread and am still working through some of them. The inside takeaway was so hard for me to get rid of, took like 6 months and I thought about it and tried to rehearse it every day during those 6 months plus practicing. It took a really long time until a light bulb went off in my head realizing what is really happening in the backswing when you combine arms with hips in the backswing.

Hip rotation took a long time to figure out and still a work in-progress. What took a long time to realize was that my lack of hip rotation was a result of upstream issues, so if i tried to fix the hip rotation in isolation, i would probably do one of two things, pull the ball off planet earth or spin them too fast and hit the ball straight right.

For me personally, everything goes to backswing and sequencing. If my arm swing gets too long, bad things happen. If my wrist angles get off, bad things also happen. If i get the right width and depth in my backswing, then my wrists get in a better angle, shaft gets on a better plane, i start rotating better, etc.

My takeaway is that none of these may be specific to you, but i have learned over time that there are typically upstream root causes and then the body reacts accordingly to make it so that you can still hit the ball.

I am no help here. I think this whole rotation thing is what has screwed up my golf swing. emoji2957.png

For a time, I came to believe that my rather short, compact, Finua-esque swing was a detriment.  It seemed I needed a John Daly like swing to generate speed.  I started focusing on wider, deeper backswings and it just does not work for my physical kinematics.  Instead, I have been doing stretch routines to help keep my flexibility... something Father-Time likes to take away.

Good video @Chip Strokes.... you even caught the sound of the ball screaming in pain from being hit so hard!  😁

I wish I could go back 30 years and have access to this type of info on the interwebs so I could have improved my swing when i could REALLY swing a club.

As a baseball player, I think this will resonate with you. Mike has a bunch of good drills and baseball examples. Milo Lines is another former ball player with good stuff online. Might help get your hips through and not stalling.

not disputing you - just trying to understand what you’re suggesting.

you say shoulder higher, but when i look at most any pro at impact, i see this:

So my response would be what part of your swing looks like theirs?

Chasing positions can get you in a lot of trouble. Positions are part of every swing and there are some that show up among great players. However the golf swing is not about trying to achieve positions it is all about matchups.

It is also much easier to diagnose a problem that is seen. We are basing our guesses off you hitting it well.

Before you go changing your takeaway just focus on keeping right shoulder higher if and when you start getting the chunks.

I generally don't hit too many chunks, but my big miss is a high flare/slice. It occurred to recently (with an observation from a friend) that I occasionally drag my hands behind way too late resulting in a very open face. Is it possible that is a result of not keeping my right shoulder up? On a bad swing the other day, I totally felt like it dipped too far, too early.

It could be that. It could be something else. Covering the ball with your chest is probably better words to use. Generally when you have an open face from the inside it is caused by something the trail side is doing.

Are you guys talking about the right (trail) shoulder dipping too much too early in the downswing?

That was a big problem for me. Monte told me not to do anything else until i got that fixed. That one took a long time to get even close to fixing. I was using my right shoulder dipping as a fault to get more shallow previously. My low point control was terrible, way behind the ball even though i was coming into the ball fairly shallow. Also would cause me to hit some shots 45 degrees right with irons at times. It was the worst thing ever.

EDIT: To clarify, the issue is the timing of when the right shoulder lowers. Its not supposed to happen immediately in transition. Trying to find a good example face on swing sequence image that has enough frames in it. In the below, on top image 5, the shoulders in the image are fairly level at around left arm parallel to the ground. My right shoulder used to be way under at that point.

Guilty here. Can lead me to some power hooks and wicked high push slices with driver and thin or fat shots with irons.

Yeah, with driver, i used to hit snappers, but then learned to hold it off a little and then comes the push slices. I hate it.

Hogan's swing is an all time classic. But remember he spent his entire life trying NOT to hit the ball left. If you just put the first bottom picture up you could say that his trail side is breaking down. However his front side is so open and moved in front of the ball, which gets his matchups correct.
