drills for better rotation

Recommended Posts

my miss with my irons is fat...sometimes terribly fat.  i seem to get myself in trouble when trying to guide the club to the ball with my arms, rather than letting my hips clear and rotating through impact.  as a result, i end up with the club stuck behind me, and i dump it well behind the ball and send an impressive chunk of earth flying down the fairway.

instead of heading down the never ending rabbit hole of youtube videos, does anyone have good drills for rotating through the ball?

thanks in advance.

I am no help here. I think this whole rotation thing is what has screwed up my golf swing. [emoji2957]

Rotation is only a piece of the puzzle. Setup, pressure points and sequencing all contribute to the ability to rotate. So focusing purely on rotation without diagnosing the cause of why you are getting stuck is as bad as the rabbit hole you are trying to avoid with YouTube.

If you lack hip and hand depth at the top and rotate you will miss the ball because of where hands/clubs will be.

If you have a good turn but pressure points and balance are off you won’t be able to rotate and will have to compensate to get the club shallow which is what usually leads to getting stuck.

If you want to go the diy route and at no cost my suggestion would be to watch Danny Maude, Chris Ryan, Athletic Motion Golf or Eric Cogorno or older meandmygolf on YouTube. They all have videos that show how to setup, how to make a proper takeaway, backswing and downswing.

Use the videos to figure out where your swing is breaking down and causing your issues

@RickyBobby_PR thanks for the suggestions.  id upload some videos so you can all better pinpoint where the swing is breaking down, but it doesn't seem to happen at the range.

Sounds similar to what i am battling. If you think it is rotation and club shallowing, the planemate could help you feel rotation, depth and shallowing. What i have learned from Monte videos, your hands should not be passive yet not over active.

As @RickyBobby_PR said, rotation is only part of the issue.  With a good setup and backswing, most problems occur with sequencing the transition.

Sending you back to YouTube, take a look at the drill that Justin Rose explains in "feel vs real"

This is a good drill. Monte has referred to it on his Instagram. I’ve seen athletic motion golf comment about it as well.

I get my hands forward of the ball at set up, put 75% on the front foot and do 3/4 chippy iron swings. That solved my fat misses for the most part.

I feel you. I've been jacking with my swing so much trying to improve rotation, that I feel it's gotten worse.

When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy

I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 6.3 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way.

I'm with you. I have come to realize that my rotation has never been satisfactory, which results in me feeling like I'm throwing my hands/arms at the ball. Not good.

Through some very good coaching I now have learned that nothing, and I mean nothing, helps me as much as making a full, complete, relaxed backswing. I can't rotate starting from a good position if I never get into that position in the first place. When it's working I have very good contact and speed.

I played in a pro-am with my coach on Monday. I was sucking big-time. (I was the horse last week!). Finally my coach told me I was starting to chop off my backswing again. I blame nervous tension. I started thinking about finishing and played the last four holes even.

For me, it's finishing the backswing.

As always, ymmv!

Try "skipping some stones or golf balls" underhanded/sidearm across the range.

Forget about the postions of hands and arms, just feel the natural turn you get while aiming at a target.

Now apply the same while swinging a club and "skip" the head of the club to the target. Don't try to hit at the ball, hit the target.

I know you tube can be a mess but it might not be all hip rotation. You can put a club over your shoulders and rotate back and forth making sure you do sway either way, rotating around a stable spine. Check out Clay Ballard's Straight Line release. You may be rotating fine but releasing the club early.

Yes, this is something I was thinking about when he mentioned feeling stuck. My coach says a lot of people he sees need less rotation, not more, including myself.

Without seeing a video I don't want to guess too much, but @Chip Strokes could it be that your club path is from the inside (a good thing, obviously) but your body is so rotated open with your hips and shoulders that your hands get stuck behind you? You basically have two options from that position: 1) Stand up/early extend to give your hands/arms space, or 2) Dump the club into the ground behind the ball.

If that's the case, a feeling of hands starting the downswing might get your arms/hands/club unstuck and more out in front of you.

thanks for the input guys. you both could be 100% correct, i might be rotating fine.

i’m just going off of the feeling i had when i hit my better shots last time out. my thoughts and my practice swings were focused on getting my hips through and out of the way. the swing felt freer and like i had more space to get the club face to the ball.

i’m gonna have to video a few swings for you all to see i guess. it’s extremely possible that what i’m feeling vs what i’m doing are completely differebt.

i appreciate all the input.

Nice move!

I don't see a rotation problem. You do get pretty far inside on the takeaway (me too) so I am wondering if when you feel stuck if it is just your trail side breaking down. Hard to tell with the swing you posted as those were good and you say it only usually happens on course.

if i hit the ball that well on the course, we’d be having a different conversation entirely 😂

then again at the range/on the sim i tend to swing free and not worry about bad shots

can you define “trail side breaking down” for me?
