Cleveland HB SOFT 11S Putter Review

For those that have I have not interacted with hello, my name is Evan and well this winter I bought a putter and now that there is no snow and I have been able to finally use it on a course for the past month or so, and consistent practice in my house with some data tracking I felt it was time to share what I have found so far.

Putter Selection

This past winter for my anniversary my wife said those magic words, "why don't you buy yourself a golf club as your gift." There was no convincing needed as I had already been thinking about putters for a little bit. I wanted to try a mallet for some added forgiveness. My current putter was Ping Karsten Anser which I bought in high school has about a little tech in a putter as possible, it simply has an insert to dull the sound and help the feel a bit. The biggest issue I have with putting is speed control on longer putts. Leaving myself three feet on putts longer than 30 feet or so was more of a 60/40 proposition than the 80/20 proposition I would like it to be. Sure much of this is that I do not practice as much as I should, but it always felt like my putter did me no favors when I strayed to the toe, which is my dominant miss.

After reviewing and seeing the many options with face milling to help with consistent distance control when not striking the putt perfectly I wanted to give one a try and see if there could be any assistance for my lag putting issues. Obviously there are a number of options for this technology now with Evnroll, PXG, and Cleveland, and I felt taking the more affordable step and a nice way to not feel like if it didn't work that I spent too much on it. Once I knew I was going Cleveland there was really only one option, and this was the 11S. I have always liked the look of the fang style putters and I know my stroke has some arc so slant neck was the choice. Was this the most scientific selection process no, but hey worth a shot right.

First Impressions

I was able to find this putter at my local Dick's Sporting Goods so there was no unboxing to do, but I really liked the look of the putter. The simple alignment line and the fangs frame the ball well for me. The face pattern is a bit mesmerizing to look at and since I was looking for the tech is nice to look at. The grip was nice, as someone who already moved to oversized, it had a nice grip. Though it had the weight printed on it which was helpful as you will see below, but a bit odd. The headcover is solid, feels nice, and closes easily on the putter with a Velcro close. Though it has taken some getting used to as with my last putter there was no headcover so I keep forgetting to put it back on.

As mentioned above I have been partial to the fang putter look so no surprises when I like the look of this club as well. It frames the ball well and the simple line is all the alignment that I need. I know SOFT is an acronym for Speed Optimized Face Technology but it also a is a nice description of how the ball feels on the face. Even with the firmer Bridgestone Tour BX I am currently gaming the putter is noticeably less firm than than my Anser. The sounds in a nice firm thud no matter where the putter is struck, though it can be just a bit louder on miss-hits where there is less milling. The only issue was on my first round of the year in about 34 degree weather with wind, my ball go so firm that the sound went to a harmonic ping noise, but now that temperatures have returned to those that actually warrant being outside this has abated.

Performance

No for the goods does this putter actually work. In the four rounds that I have played so far I have one three putt down to about 1.6% in the previous two years with the Anser my 3 putt percentage was 4.5%. It is still early but this is a great sign and the biggest area of improvement for this putting. One-putts have been down a bit but that is due to me not having the correct ball position. I was finally able to clear this up last round and holed 4 five to six foot putts in a row. The lag putting has been a large improvement having approached more of a 70/30 "gimme" range first putts, and really to get much better will take practice.

Also the putter with the heavier weight just feels so much more in control and solid. Face control and arc consistency is feeling great with the added weight at 20 grams. One change I did make was the oversize stock grip was a bit larger than my liking so I went to a Super Stroke Traxion Tour 2.0 which fits better for me. I really feel that the fact technology is a big help especially on those long putts where I can really get strikes moving around a bit more.

Conclusions

I have really enjoyed this putter in all my rounds, and it does not hurt that the first putt I took on course with this I holed about 25 foot putt for a par save. On course the putter has felt very good and very stable on miss-hits. The face technology is something that I really feel is working to keep the ball more consistent distance leaving shorter second putts. I look forward to keeping up on how this is going and share as I learn more about the putter.

  • 1 year later...

I know this is a year old, but I bought a Cleveland HB Soft 11C. Never owned a center shafted putter, and so far I like it. Played with a Carbite ZH for 20 years, and it was still good to me, but it was time for a change, as I was upgrading my entire bag, from driver down, sans a few clubs that will never leave my bag. I like the way it feels, and I never see that ugly "hop" after the stroke, when I need to putt from long distance. I notice that my putts are more online, and when I miss, its really close. The black alignment line is the only thing I did not like, as it would kinda disappear when I would look down at the club, so I used a white paint pen for more visibilty. Also used the white paint pen in the crease where the "wings" or "fangs" meet the body of the putter. My old eyes see this much better, and my putting is much better. Speed is what I need to practice. Overall this putter will be in my bag for years to come.
