That's loco fool. It's like Noah's flood out there.  I keep getting emails about courses being closed.  I don't want to play golf when I need a canoe to get to my ball. 🤣

Of course Duck Creek would be flooded, you need to find better courses to play that don't flood with a passing shower or sprinklers.. 🤣

This video basically sums up what I’ve been working on this week.  Passive/quiet lower body vs my old “fire the hips” action.  Shows three top tier professional golfers and the “separation” between the hips and shoulders to start the downswing:

My twin brother came and stayed with us for a few days so my swing took a back seat.  We've been slammed with rain for the past week and a half.  Will resume my journey this week.

Not much by way of swing work this week, but I did want to check and see how I've progressed compared to my first day of working on it.

I put together this short little comparison video.  Looks like I've definitely made a big change to my backswing plane compared to the first attempt at a change.

Yellow line = elbow plane

Red line = backswing path

Green line = downswing path

I've got a mount, the problem is the place I put it to shoot the shots is inside my squat rack so I always move it after I'm done.  I need to put some tape on the floor and mark the location of it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Had a great time playing golf over vacation.  We played an 18 hole course (Ozarks National) and a nine-hole par 3 course (Top of the Rock).

My swing felt very free and fluid.  My irons were extremely solid with nice high trajectory.  3 wood was my go-to off the tee (driver was being finicky).

I think part of the solid swings outdoors was being able to finish with a high follow through.  I'm starting to wonder if I sub-consciously alter my swing in the garage because the ceiling is so low and I'm afraid of hitting it on my follow through...

Haven't been able to get in many swings since the vacation trip.  Things got very busy with work and MGS Moderating duties.  I'm playing this Friday at a new course, so we'll see what's what then.

Well, I played today.  Things started great tee to green and the swing felt good.  I hit all of the greens in regulation on the front nine.  Has two birdies, but four three-putt bogies…. Yeah….

Then came the back nine.  I’ll preface by saying it was hot.  Those who live in Texas know how hot it can get (see below).  We teed of at 12:40pm.36FDD9B2-5E92-4B7D-8F24-8B36B7AEA82E.jpeg

I topped my 3wood off the nine tee box, hit a great 3wood to close to the green, pitched on, and two putted for bogey.

I went bogey, double, triple, double to start the back nine.  More three putts as well.  It was Jekyll and Hyde.

I think the three putts eventually wore me down.  I had 40 putts and lost 7 strokes in putting alone.

9196AED0-4FE2-4197-B52B-0DC093559B32.jpeg

Overall, lots of positives from the front nine. But the back….  Just need more practice.  Since before our trip, my time went way down and I think some minor things crept in (leaning too far forward for one).

Ran a strokes gained analysis on the front nine from yesterday.

Overall, I lost 3.2 strokes compared to a pro.  I lost 3.6 strokes on putting, or a whopping 115%.  Have to improve my lag putting and putting distance control overall.  Can’t hit 9/9 greens and shoot two over par.  Just so frustrating.

Are you strictly a feel putter or do you have certain measurements that are for different distances?  Ie Roughly 5 inches back is 20 footer and 10 inches back is 40 footer?  I started doing that more last year and it's greatly improved my lag putting.  I still need to work on holing more of the 10 feet and less, but my distance control is usually spot on.

I typically go by feel.  I think I need to take the time to develop a system as you described. Clearly what I’m doing isn’t working LOL.  But I also don’t really practice distance control.  I need to schedule time to work on it, just very busy right now.  Work, family, and life doesn’t always agree with golf goals.

If you hit 9 greens that means you had 2 three putts?  How far were your putts?

When you say you go by feel, how do you know what the right feel is?   To me,  feel is something that is learned through experience.  People always talk about throwing a ball and just feeling how far to throw it.   The first time you threw a ball you had no feel,  you had to practice.  After throwing lots of balls, your body knows how to react.    I don't think you necessarily need a system,  you need to build those feels.   Distance control is one of the hardest things to practice because you actually need that distance to roll the ball.   Most people don't so we have to go to the putting green.   Do you have 25 feet available in your house?    If not,  I have found the ExPutt simulator as a great tool to help build those feels.   It doesn't help the visualization,  but really trains your body on how far to swing the club to get the ball to roll a certain distance.    Also,  when putting do you do longer distance same tempo or same distance faster stroke to control your distance?

I had 2 birdies and 4 three-putts. Two were from 60ft and the other two were from 27 and 36ft.  Not upset about three-putting from 60ft, but Tour average from 30ft is 2 putts.  On the back nine I had two more three-putts, one from 12 feet.

I agree that for the correct feel I just need more practice.  Right now, the nearest course is 25mins from my home where I could practice lag putting.  With work and family stuff, I just need to schedule/find time to work on practicing my distance.

As I currently don’t have much time, the thought of a system is appealing.

Not much new to report on the swing overhaul.  I try to swing indoors most days working on centerdness of strike.

I've just been so busy with work and planning our home sale (offer accepted) and trip out of state to find a new home.  Other real world priorities you know.

I did play about a week ago and shot a +4 76 with @MrBandit I wasn't striking it all that well with my irons and wedges (lots of shots off the toe) but my putter was finally decent and I had a few birdies on the round.  Driver was solid, woods were solid (two tee balls too solid and went through the FW into hazards...).  Played only fades and it worked well.

Still a work in progress!

Here is Day 1.  Just a visual for those curious to see what I'm working on and how I'm progressing:

Hey CS, I just came across your "chasing scratch" thread... loving in.  I have just embarked on a similar goal based improvement regimen, and the keys you outlined with included tips videos are perfect for my swing (and flaws).  I have to admit, I jumped to the end of your thread and watched your day 1 to Week 5(?) comparison video, and the difference is staggering.  Well done!

While my goals aren't scratch golf... I am targeting a solid 5.  And also increase my swing speed by 5mph on average.  I believe a lot of my issues have to do with poor swing position and over compensating in the down swing to hit the ball solidly (but not nearly consistent enough).  I will say that my scrambling is more likely why I am a single digit than my ball striking... so with improvement on achieving more "pro-like" positions in the swing will definitely provide more scoring opportunities.

Thanks for the documented journey and the great comments and suggestions along the way.  Can't wait to see that scratch handicap card that you will post soon!

I read your first post @DriverBreaker and it sounded a lot like me! I have an extremely flat backswing and I always made it work because I was already under plane so I didn't have to shallow or anything. Recently I have had it with how it looks and how it always feels like it is on the edge of breaking down. I have my own swing overhaul thread but it is mostly madness and a psycho journal for me. Anyway, did you feel like you worked out your flatness and, if so, did it stay out of your swing? As a reference here is me at the top of my swing a few weeks ago when I decided "enough is enough":

and this is me when I try the jim waldron “arm swing illusion” feel:

Still going to be a long haul to get this right AND my delivery is going to have to totally change. A long haul ahead….

We always have our biases in patterns.  So I will always have to be conscious of it in my swing.  I have some good feels that I use to keep it in check.  I would experiment with a few different external ideas to see what is easiest for you to implement.  For example, put the clubhead high to a point out in front of you in the takeaway then finish your turn.   With a lot of people, giving your brain an externally focused task can reap great results very quickly because your brain is organized around a task vs obsessing about internal body positions.

How are your results trending @DriverBreaker? Do you feel like your swing overhaul is "sticking" or does it remain a work in progress?

Well there are phases of learning.  Cognitive: where you have to consciously work to understand the change and focus hard on each rep.  Associative:  where you don’t have to work to understand it as much, but you still have to work to engrain it.  It’s not automatic yet.  Then there is the Autonomous:  where it is on auto pilot.  It is the new move/pattern.

I’d say I’m in Associative. You’ll see many pro golfers in this phase still rehearsing a move in the pre-shot routine, yet they play amazing golf.  To truly get something in auto pilot would take a long time.  And then there is the point where you might be on auto pilot on the range or in practice, but the actual golf course changes things.
