PMookie’s 12 week golf fitness journey!

Recommended Posts

Well, I went ahead and did it. I signed-up with a fitness coach to get me off the couch, and get me in golf shape, as well as overall shape! The program is 12 weeks to start and is through Guidry Golf and Sport. It’s done via an app and weekly meetings, and the program is designed individually based on the person’s goals, medical history, limitations, etc. JP has a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and has been working with golfers of all ages and abilities for awhile. He also trains non-golfers...

Anyway, I figured it was time. I’ve gained 30 pounds since surgery two autumns ago, and I don’t have enough stamina to finish a full round comfortably. I grew-up playing sports all day, every day, lettered in 5 sports in HS, and played collegiate/pro basketball... I can’t run 100 yards without dying now. It’s time I did something! I’m posting it here to help keep me accountable, so I’ll post throughout the 12 weeks about the program, exercises, etc. I hope to get in better golf shape, but also get my muscles toned again too! The program involves diet as well, not meaning food restriction, but eating better, so that will help. I’m going to be doing this at home using my dusty TRX system, some dumbbells, and some resistance bands. Thankfully that’s all one needs! So, I start Monday, and will get-in three workouts a week.

Thanks for helping me be accountable! I’m not looking forward to being stiff Tuesday! HA!!!

You can do this! Hopefully it will inspire me to get back to working out.  I know I should and I need to lose the COVID/work from home 15 but am lacking the motivation.

Louisiana guy, cost, ability to do the workouts at home without having to buy a lot of equipment, and his background in PT. I have a genetic disease of the back, so I need someone who can take that into account when designing a program. I’m not looking for just speed, which is what most advertise, I need something more “holistic”.

Thanks! It’s been tough. I remember my parents were always very active, so we were too. This thought helped me see that I need to show my kids the same thing.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, workout 1 complete. One word: nauseous.

I am SO ridiculously out-of-shape. Ugh.

But, it’s been started. The way the program works is a day of “mobility”, which are core/back/hip/rotation etc exercises, then the next day is a full workout with dumbbells, bike (what led to the nausea), bands, and even TRX system. Then a day of mobility, a workout day, etc. There is a day of rest every 6th day.

Day 2 is in the books... Wow. I can’t even stand-up. Thighs are burning! Here was today’s workout. Notice it starts with “mobility” for trunk/hips/thoracic, then moved into “weights/resistance”. Not a ton at the bottom, but when one is starting from such a horrible shape of condition, it will start slowly and then build. I won’t keep posting pics so folks don’t steal the workouts, but I’ll show it today just to give an idea of entry level stuff.

I’ll tell you right now, the “bike sprints” are a BI—-H! I did 3 yesterday, pushed-out 4 today. Wow. Crazy.

It’s tough! It took me a week to finally start the program. It’s painful, and difficult right now, but I keep reminding myself that I used to play basketball for 2-3 hours a day. This is nothing! Best of luck!!! It’s worth it in the long run.

Day 4 done. Here’s what I can tell y’all... The “mobility” stuff? No problem. The weights/bands/TRX, good stuff. Bike sprints?!?! DUUUUUUDE. Those put me down for an HOUR after I’m done. No joke. The first two times I did them I did 15 seconds, rest 45 and I was able to do FOUR each time. Today? 10 seconds, rest 50... I did 6! Still just 60 total seconds, all-out, and tightening the resistance a bit each time. Seriously. Those are A$$ KICKERS!!! Wow.

If you’re a spin class maniac, I have serious respect for you!!!! Sheesh!!!!

Yeah those spin classes look intense. Never done those but as a runner done plenty of speed work that really kicks my but back in the day. Now it would kick my butt. Keep up the hard work.
