Ok guys I am looking at a new set of irons and I am strongly considering doing a mixed set.  Tell me your success stories and your horror stories, I want to hear them all.  I want to hear what you would have done different and what you are glad you did!  Thanks for your help!!

Mixed within the same brand? It’s extremely common today and companies like Mizuno, Srixon, and Taylormade make it relatively easy to combo irons within their brand

@jlukesvery true and as lofts get stronger I am sure it will continue to become more common.  My concern is adjust lofts or is it really necessary, I understand lofts don’t have to be prefect but curious how its worked for others.

adjusting the lofts is about gapping; not the clubs themselves.   As was said,  most manufacturers make it easy for their clubs to be put into combo sets.   If you need to fix gaps,  you just bend to the lofts that give you the correct distance.

@cnosil and @jlukes that’s really good information, thank you!! The mixed set I am thinking about is a little different.  I am thinking about going Callaway UT 21* and 24* (bent to 25*) X Forged CB 6 iron (stock is 29*) and MB 7-PW all bent 1* strong to match CB lofts and MB 50*

I don't think the combo is a problem.  I wouldn't adjust the lofts until you hit them and determine the gapping. Why bend if you don't have too?

I was thinking about getting some Hogan's, and all of their irons are gapped in 4* intervals, but I had an old CB/MB combo set collecting dust, so I had those bent to the correspond to the Hogan's.  They were ok, but not modern enough to have any forgiveness at all.  So, I decided to go with a new set of Srixon's...after much testing with other manufacturers as well of course.  Srixon does have combo sets on their website for easy ordering...like @jlukes mentioned, but I decided to go with the ZX5 in the 4-5 irons, and the ZX7 in 6-PW.  Now the ZX5 are stronger lofted than the ZX7, but for the way I did it, only the 5-iron would've been lofted too close to the 6-iron, so I ordered the 5-iron bent 1* weak to match the 5-iron loft of the ZX7.

I still haven't received the 4-5 irons from my order, so I can't really give you a success or failure story.

I go from driver to 5W set down 1°, 4-5-6 Hybrids, 5-AW (all power-spec +1.5°), 54°, 58°. That's 15 clubs, but I alternate my 5H & 5I, or pull the 6H...just depends. All my clubs are the the same brand.

I have a full set of Cobra F8 1 length irons 6i through GW + 55 degree SW-- all 7i length and lie.   I purchased the Titleist T400 irons last Summer (6i - GW), and played with that full set for about 4 months. The T400 are lofted VERY strong.   You kind of have to ignore the loft because club manufacturers are doing so much with hollow heads and thinning faces and general engineering that the lofts aren't the end-all/be-all that they used to be.  But just as an example, the t400's wedges are 38 (pW), 43, and 49.  You could just say that the 39 is really a 9i (and a strong one at that). But all the irons fly farther.... and higher... and descend  steeper than the equivalent lofted clubs I have tested against.  So you just have to test and know your set, which I can do because I got through COVID by buying a Skytrak launch monitor.

So, after about 4 months, I missed the versatility and consistency of the 1 length irons, but really liked the extra distance.   I ended up blending the set... 6,7, and 8i in the t400s and then 8- SW in the Cobra.  Yes, you saw that right:  2, 8 irons.   As previous posts have noted, you have to pay attention to the gaps.   For me, I hit the T400 8i about 155 yds.  The Cobra 1L  8i is 145, and then I gap down roughly 10 yds per iron from there.   The 1` length irons give me full gaps with half shots from 75 to 120 yards.  I can choke down to get 5 yard increments from the 10 yard gaps without worrying about hitting thin (because they are 7i length).

This set up is much better all the way around.   For reference, I am 62 yrs old and play to a 9.3 GHIN index.  I play a couple of times a week as I am not yet retired.

Almost all of the club manufacturers are now offering the hollow body irons, built essentially like a hybrid.    Ping, Taylormade... its all the rage.

And, as some others have mentioned,  you can now get fitted with blended sets from most of the manufacturers, too.    From my experience, the hollow body construction in the wedges and short irons produced more distance, but a lot more dispersion.   I hit about 1 out of every 10 or 15 that have REALLY low spin and go 10 or more yards farther than plan for. That's a killer in a real round.   I prefer the consistency and predictability of my traditional cavity back short irons and wedges (albeit, with mine,  they are one length).

Incidentally, the rest of my bag is a Ping G410 plus driver (10.5), Cobra F7 3W,  Callaway Rogue 3h (19), Callaway XR 4h (22) -- and then 6,7,8i in the Titleist T400, 8i-SW in the Cobra F8.   I have a 60 degree (Volkey) wedge I usually add to the back during drier, summer months.

That's my experience.

I've never worried about having the same brand clubs throughout the bag.  For irons/hybrids, the key to me is distance control.  I have three hybrids that are over 15 years old and I keep playing them because I know exactly how far I hit them and for whatever reason, they are my three easiest clubs to hit as well.  Same with a 10 year old gap wedge that I hit consistently on the sweet spot and can hit it 80 yards every time (full swing), so I build my other irons around these 4 clubs to get a bag full of clubs that are exactly 10 yards distance between them and it has worked very well.

IMHO, mixed iron sets are the only way to go.  Forgiveness and higher launch with the longer irons, and shaping and trajectory control with the shorter irons has worked for me.

I have had great luck with my Titleist 718 irons. I have a mixed set with3-4 AP3 and 5-9 in AP2’s. The distance gapping is still great even with the stronger lofts in the AP3’s. The AP3’s really help get the ball in air with the longer irons. I have no regrets.

It all boils down to the gapping you get. Lofts don't matter for the most part. I played 585 4 & 5 785 6-pw for over a year. 785's. All were so the lofts were uniform. What I found was that there was a large gap between 6 & 5 and a close gap between 4 & 5. Even though from a loft perspective they were gapped properly. I went to the ZX 7's 4-pw and the gapping is better. This is obviously individual. If you can get the gapping correct I don't see a downside.

This is good to know as I will have the same set-up as what you used to have...I was wondering if I may have to go with the full set as ZX7, instead of having the 4 & 5 as ZX5.  Of course I did order the ZX5 5-iron lofted the to match the ZX7 5-iron...we'll see how it works out.

Best ever…(Back in the day…)

Cleveland TA3 3-7

Cleveland TA1 8-PW

Top Pick Today:

Callaway Apex 3-7

Apex Pro 8-PW

need to bend 8-PW to close distance gapping due to power of Apex.

The forgiveness is there and the extra tech will help. It was a gaping issue that I could have fixed with bending the lofts a little bit, however I am a MGSer so I just bought a new set. 🤣

I would be a strong recommend for combo/mixed set in general just have to be willing to adjust them to get gaps correct.

I have seen several OEM's that are now offering mixed sets as one of their standard offerings. I have never played a mixed set myself but the idea of having "more feel" in my scoring clubs definitely intrigues me.

I am a higher handicap player so I need the game improvement characteristics in my longer and mid irons but I am pretty good with my 8, 9  and PW so I could easily see how having more control with those clubs could possibly help my game.

The ZX5s are more efficient (higher smash), so you might not need the loft gaps of the ZX7 since the ZX5 with the same loft will go further.  But it shouldn't be off by much, 1-1.5*, so you can bend it once you get it, if needed.  I would definitely do a gapping session on a LM with the 5 and 6 irons.
