I want carnage! After this past week, I want a REAL test since I believe that’s how the Majors should be.

15 mph is fair enough....

I am feeling this a bit more teeth would be nice so dry conditions this week would be critical as that's what did in the tournament last week, on top of the already relatively easy layout (he says knowing he couldn't sniff 100 no matter the conditions playing the course lengths they do)

I would prefer him winning one or two more before possibly winning the PGA. Same with Rory and the Masters. Grand Slam winners are the legends of the game, and neither one is there yet. It would dilute the accomplishment.

Jack won the career grand slam at the age of 26. Tiger won it at the age of 24. Spieth is 27 at the moment. Seems fitting!

Is it his time? I would love to see it!

Hopefully Spieth can keep his neurosis under control. He seems to be his own worst enemy at times, though a good guy at the core.

Quote

His analysis of how he fell on hard times proves a couple facts we already suspected. First, Spieth is brilliant. Second, as you might have guessed if you’ve ever listened to one of the pre-shot Greller Dialogues, he’s neurotic. His brain is his great strength, but as with many analytical people, there is a tendency to spiral into realms of over-thought when trouble rises, and to hear Spieth narrate his 2018 and 2019 season is to listen to an anxiety dream.

Many golfers speak about the need to “fake it ’til you make it”—to model a confident demeanor even if you don’t feel very confident, with the hope that results will follow—but Spieth is a little too cerebral for self-delusion. In the end, to emerge from this hole, he was going to have to think his way out anyway. According to him, with the help of Cameron McCormick, he has.

Jack had already won 5 previous majors before he won the British Open to attain the Grand Slam. Tiger attained his first Career Grand Slam in the middle of his Tiger Slam in 2000-2001. Everyone knew even before that he would be one of the top players in history.

Spieth isn't in the same ballpark as Jack and Tiger.

Not to derail the thread but I think that is the beauty of a record like that. Someone like Spieth could win 4 major and get the career grand slam while Faldo with 6 was not close, just a bit of luck for him if it happens that way. In the end it would just be a good trivia answer not to mention 4 majors would put Spieth top 20 in major wins all time and 5 for Rory is top 13. But to each their own. Personally I like Spieth so I will root for him and don't really care that he gets the career grand slam with only 4 major wins.

No one is claiming he is.  Let's please not take the thread down the GOAT trail which leads to no definitive answer state of oblivion 😉.

I'm looking forward to tons of wind with short drives into it, and bombs down wind. 7800-7900 yards is insane, and I'd love to try to break 95 in it

When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. I honestly don't spend much money on golf equipment, but I'm constantly reading reviews in case I ever get ready to buy

I swing left handed and have been the State of Maine Left Hander's champion since 1997, the last year they held the tournament. I'm currently a 6.3 handicap. Trying to get lower, but my gut gets in the way.

Wind forecast is still kind of limp. Thursday/Friday barely get in double figures by the afternoon. The Saturday/Sunday forecast not much at all.

Having been out to play at Kiawah once (which was enough!) I think this is such a great golf course to host a major. It is so so so so so so hard and I think it can/should really identify a great player rather than a YE Yang or Rich Beem (both at Hazeltine, of course...sorry for the drive-by on those guys). As a resort course it is probably way too hard for 98% of golfers but some people are masochists or just enjoy an absurd challenge. As an anecdote, the wind can get up to 30-40 mph out there and I asked a caddie if people cancel their tee times on days like that and he was like "definitely not." And then I asked them how they usually shoot in those conditions "oh...horribly...like really bad *evil laugh*." 😆

I was looking at the entries to this tournament and saw a name most of you have never heard of, Sonny Skinner.

I used to work with both of his parents at Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga.  I walked and followed him at a tournament in Hershey PA many years ago when I was in the area for work.  Just thought it was interesting to see his name again.

Here is a little about him from Wikipedia.

In the 1997 Buick Open, he tied the course record at the Warwick Hills Golf Course with a 62 but Billy Mayfair shot a 61 in 2001 to break the record. He failed to retain his card in 1997 but went through qualifying school for a fourth time to earn his card for 1998. He returned to the Nationwide Tour in 1999 where he would play full-time until 2004. He played on the Nationwide Tour part-time until 2010.

Skinner joined the Champions Tour in 2010 once he turned 50.

Skinner was named the PGA Professional of the Year in 2008 and the Senior PGA Professional of the Year in 2010, becoming the first person to win both awards. He is a PGA teaching professional at the River Pointe Golf Club in Albany, Georgia.

Was able to attend a practice round session yesterday, and as my first time visit out there, it is an absolutely stunningly beautiful golf course. Simply unreal beauty.

Would love to see Spieth win it ... I will say that holes 14 thru 18 are directly head-on into the wind. Not a single player (from what we watched) was able to get to the 607 yard par 5 16th in two ... many were hitting FWs and were still 20 yards or so short.

17th tee is just insane, it measured out 223 from the back tee and is likely more to 250+ with the direct head wind.

Can’t wait to watch ... and my dark horse is Scottie. He hits the ball hella high, but we watched him for about an hour on the range hitting flighted bullets, not that it’ll automatically translate onto the course, but I’ll be rooting for him and Jordan.

Left with a great souvenir as well. 👌🏼

Did you find any spots where it was less crowded and could really enjoy seeing players hit their shots? I’ve heard walking out to holes 4-6 is a good spot. I’ll be out there Sat-Sun.

Good question, it wasn’t really crowded while were there ... we only did the front 9 for one group and it was for Finau, so we never really picked a spot and watched the groups come thru for the front side.

A lot of the marquee guys were starting off on the back and we were there for most of the day. I’ll say for us, the best spot was the landing area of the fairway from the 11th tee, which was just across from a hill to catch the par 3 17th ... on a Sunday, that’s where I would be.

The course essentially runs in two parallel lines, the middle section of the gallery bisecting each side of the course was busiest ... the ocean side, you’ll only get action for that specific hole, but the gallery was much lighter.

We moved over to the ocean side at 17th and it was nice. I’ll say this, unless you were behind the players or directly lateral of them, it was next to impossible to follow their shots. Blindingly bright out there.
