US Open Regional Qualifier

The regional qualifier for the US Open was held at our club today.

Our condo is directly adjacent to the first green - so my wife and her friends got to see a close up of the action everything from final cut and roll of the greens to the putting with each of the groups.

 I on the other hand was one of the volunteers ferrying the players/caddies from #10 to #11 which is about a 600 yd trek through the woods. As an FYI, this is a course that @MattF, @RollingGreens, @Mr_Theoo, @MaxEntropy, @Lakeeriegolferand @DiscipleofPenickplayed last year at our Ohio outing so I thought you guys would be interested in the scores. The set-up today was 6800 yds from the tips, Slope72.9/136.  Note: weather conditions were perfect; mild temps, no wind, and partly cloudy. 1st place was 6 under, 2nd place 1 under. The next group who were in the green are currently battling it out for the alternate positions.

That’s awesome!. Catawba is a beautiful course. I definitely brag about getting to play there, it is a real gem.

Tony, when did you get you complete your green roller apprenticeship?   Sounds like a fun venue, enjoy!

I watch these guys every morning with my first cup of coffee. I'd love to try out that roller.

I think a part time course maintenance crew job would be fun... particularly if it comes with free or discounted rounds .

Caleb Davem, the first place finisher will be someone to watch, he's a sophomore at Ohio State. My wife watched him drive the first green (actually past the green) on #1 which is 360 from the tips.  A chip and a putt for a bird. Interestingly he was -5 on the front which is the more difficult of the two nines and only picked up 1 stoke on the back.

It's pretty sick how good some of these guys are and they aren't close to being on tour.  There's a guy whom I have played with a couple of times, a mini tour hero, who is 25 and still chasing the dream - he shot 64 at his regional qualifier so he's moved on to the next level.  IMO he lacks the temperament to make it to the big time.

I can just imagine what his coach said after finishing +11. "You're no Ben Hogan ...oh wait you are Ben Hogan"   or "you need to get fitted ...those Ben Hogan clubs aren't working for you"

We've got two local kids playing in the Dallas sectional today. John Murdock IV, who grew up in Laramie, and turned pro, and Kirby Coe Kirkham, a University of WY player. John is holding his own and is even after 15. This sectional is loaded with PGA Tour Pros, including a former US Open Champ, Graeme McDowell, and Masters Champion, Mike Weir. Straight and seldom boys!
