That being said they are still a great iron and play very well... if you will be disappointed with a new iron replacing it I would 100% hold off to avoid that feeling even though they are a stellar club. I am playing a combo of them right now. 6,7 in the ZX5 and 8-P in the ZX7, the 7's are probably the best feeling irons I have hit in a very long time, right up there with the V6 from a few years ago and the T100S! GolfSpy_SHARK
I am I would say intrigued to try a players iron. I currently game the 790s but at the least I want to go swing some just to see if anything could work for me. Not that they are better for me but strictly intrigued by them to see if it’s something I could utilize on course. Hoyoymac
Been gaming my Titleist AP3 irons since spring of 2018. Have liked them but have about 500 rounds on them and they are a bit dinged up. Been experimenting with a set of Corey Paul cavity back irons picked up off Ebay for cheap and have really liked the looks and feel. They are traditionally lofted compared to the stronger lofted AP3s 3 degrees weaker per club. They also have slightly stiffer and heavier shafts in them which reduces my hook miss. Will be making a decision soon. GolfSpy TCB
I bit the bullet and have a set of Mizuno MP20 HMB's on the way (4 - PW) to replace my MP68's which were a replacement for my all time favorite MP33's that were sadly relieved from my possession along with everything else of value in my car years back. I considered the MP20 "players", but decided on the HMB's to use some of the technology to my advantage, as well as the stronger lofts to aide my aging swing - at least that is the plan... execution success to be determined. I also considered all the usual suspects listed above... especially the Ping (210 and 500) and the Callaway Apex... but I'm True Mizuno Blue by heart... so I went with my emotional choice. Absolutely the right choice for my game. The ZX7s are unbelievably easy to hit but still give me the workability I was missing from the D7 Forged during my demo. The feel of the Srixons is unreal and they're giving me a much flatter trajectory but still the height/spin needed to control my distances. Honestly, my only frustration is that I didn't order the ZX7 3i. Will be making a decision soon. I still think the AP3s were one of Titleist's best designs in recent history. Great balance of a forgiving game improvement head along with less offset and a little stronger lofts. I personally think that of the big OEMs, Titleist has the best designs regarding playability and forgiveness in the given package. I personally don't see a reason why manufacturers aren't using tungsten in almost all their designs. If there is not perimeter tungsten in an iron design, then forgiveness is being left on the table. The AP2s and now T100 irons have seemed to be one of the few players irons to really embrace tungsten the last few years. I'm not saying irons that don't use tungsten are bad but it can generally only mean forgiveness is being left on the table, especially if the design is for a more compact players head. hartrick11
Callaway had a fitting day at my club yesterday so I stopped in. Apex pro still isn’t doing it for me in the 7 iron despite looking awesome. I really liked the x forged though. Longer blade length than my Cobras but still solid feeling, not hollow like the pros. More offset than I would like but I could easily get past it. I did also hit the mb and wow does it feel amazing. Really wish I liked the Pros because the players combo (4-7 pro 8-w mb) would work nicely. No TCB on hand unfortunately, but those need to be ordered as a full set & probably wouldn’t work for me at the top end anyway. Adding X Forged to my contender list. hartrick11
Well 8 months later I finally pulled the trigger! I tried and over analyzed pretty much everything on the market and at the end of the day settled on a TaylorMade combo after my real fitting. P790 4i, P770 5-7, MC 8-W. 4 degree gaps from 22-46, 1 flat, $ taper 120. I struggled picking something because I needed to bring spin down a bit and gain some forgiveness, but LOVE the feel of my Cobra CBs so most of the clubs I “should” play couldn’t match up in feel. The fitting definitely helped on that front, seeing data from a bunch of clubs at once, and also testing with real golf balls vs beat up range balls. I think this combo gives me what I need at the top end while maintaining the top notch feel of the MC in the short irons. Taylormade did a fantastic job making the P7 series blendable in that respect. ZX7 and the mizuno 223 were awesome in feel and forgiveness but the turf interaction was a bit better for me with TM. The Titleist T series and pings were also great, and had the turf interaction I like, but price on i59 was just too high to stomach and I liked the 790/770 4-7 better than the T200. The 790 in particular is nuclear. Now I just have to wait to get them, ugh… Quote Driver: TSi 3 10* w/ Graphite Design AD IZ 7X Fairway/Hybrid: TSi 2 15* & 18* w/ Graphite Design AD IZ 7X, AD IZ 95X Irons: P790 4i, P770 5-7i, P7MC 8-P, $ Taper 120 Wedges: SM7 52F/54 S, 58 M w/ Modus 125 Putter: California Hollywood 34" Circle H
