I'm still sort of new to the game, Covid year was my first real year dedicating some time to the game.  At my skill level I'm not exactly hitting greens from 200+, but I'm pretty athletic and can carry my 5i ~200.  However, I'm wayward at this distance and inconsistent with my ball striking.  My personal question is, does it make sense to add another long club or another wedge?  For the group, how many clubs do you carry that you can hit over 200 yards?

Cheers!

First, welcome to the Forum. You've asked a great question: lots of variables that could go into this answer.

Mark Crossfield (YouTube golf coach) has recently been advocating that many golfers considered going to 3 or even 2 wedges to give themselves more options at their top of their bags. His argument seems to be based on two things:

  • Strokes gained stats tell us that proficiency from 150-200+ correlates strongly with better golf, and
  • Most players are capable of hitting a variety of shots and distances with just a couple of wedges.

To answer your question directly, I'd say that my hybrid, 5w, and 3w are all over 200 clubs.

very interesting idea. I could totally get on board with one less wedge. Bend my 54 * weak, have higher bounce with the v-sole and relief could still be very playable. This would allow another super hybrid, or Utility or DHY.

Thanks, I've been lurking for the past year... it seems like a great community.

I've been noodling this question for a while.  I'm currently 3W, 3U, 4I and 5I at 200+.  I perhaps have a gap around 230-240, but I'm not consistent enough with these clubs to really have the gap turn into anything clearly identifiable.   One thing I've been toying with is adding a 3 or 4 hybrid to get a little higher flight on some of those shots.  In "theory" it would help to stick greens at that distance.

Welcome!

I have debated this for some time. The issue I always come across and it's probably due to my lack of talent, but finding true gaping at the top of my bag is an issue. It seems in real world practice I have 3 clubs that could be used from 200-230 depending on the situation so adding a 4th is not at the top of my priority list. If my home course was longer and I was faced with that shot more perhaps it would get stronger consideration.

Yeah, I'm here as well. Even though I mentioned Crossfield's argument, I haven't adopted it myself. There are reasons:

  • My home course is very short. Unless I butcher a drive (and that certainly happens), there isn't a par 4 on my home course that asks me to hit more than a hybrid on my second shot. My longer clubs (under the driver) probably are used more often off the tee than they are from the turf.
  • I've come to rely heavily on a clock wedge system, in which I have multiple wedge swings for each of my GW, SW, and LW. Because that has now become a strength of my game statistically, I'm very reluctant to give it up.

My average drive is 230 and I hit my 3 wood 200 so that is all I've got. As long as I play the proper tees for my game I can reach any par 4 up to 430 which I may see 2 or 3 times a year. At my club I use my 3 wood on two par 5's and 2 par 3's and that is it. I am much better at full swings so on par 5's I lay up to around 100 yards out and on long par 4's I am usually close enough and rarely in trouble that I have a decent shot at an up and down. About 10 rounds in this year and I've lost one ball so my goal is stay out of trouble by hitting clubs I can control.

I have a 3i for about 210 and a 17* hybrid for about 220.  If I played courses regularly that were longer I would look for a 3 or 4 wood to get me in the 230+ range.  In addition to a PW I carry  a 49, 53 & 57  wedge combo and those four work for me in any distance up to 125 yards.  Once I play with this set's PW more I could probably drop the 49*, strengthen the 53 a couple *'s and add a top end club if necessary.

I currently have a 4 wedge set up (45, 50, 54, 58).  I could drop the 50 and work on a shorter swing with the PW, but why.  I'd be adding something that theoretically helps me stick greens that I have a minuscule chance of hitting in the first place.  The flip side is strokes gained says I should be working on that longer end of the bag and would benefit from greater consistency there.  Getting 10 yards closer from 230-250 makes a big difference.

I'll probably not do anything about it in the near future, but it's the one area where my bag setup has questions.

According to Arccos I have 5; but I would rarely rely on my 5i to go over 200.
I just put the 5w into play so that's why it's close to the 4 hybrid; that should get closer to the 215-230 range with the 4h being 185-220.
I try not to have too many gaps and I'm comfortable with my setup. After driver I have 3 clubs I can use when the distance is 200 or more.

I play PW, 50*, 54 and 58 and that wedge makeup works for me.

Normally I have 5, D, 3W,  1 iron, 4 Iron, 5 Iron. Currently only one the 2 Iron.  Driver & 5 iron.  I let a friend use the 3W and my 1 & 4 irons are broke in half. That all said I should answer 0 as I am not yet released to play golf.

Great question and makes a person think about their game and how one plays the game. Maybe we I should only have two clubs that cover 200+ and focus more on 200 and in clubs which should be the scoring clubs correct? maybe my plan for when I can return to golf.

Voted 1, but more realistically it's 0 to 2 (and sometimes more) depending on conditions and if I'm 'on it' that day.

Seriously though, I am very nearly 60 and usually hit my 3 wood around or just over 200 as long as i hit it ok, and a bit longer if i nail it.

I recently ditched my driver (as i was getting less distance and more trees on average) and replaced it with a second (identical) 3 wood but extended the shaft by 1" and set the loft to 13* (as opposed to 16* on my 'original').

So I now have (what i call) a 3w, 4w, 5w, 4h top end of my bag and it works ok for me. Given that I'm not especially consistent or long, i am usually fairly even off the tee to driver users of similar handicap.

Off a tee I can hit my 5I, 4H, 3H & 3W over 200 yards, off the deck 3H & 3W. I should probably clarify that I CAN hit over 200 yds, it does not mean that I actually will when faced with the shot. 😆

can hit my 5 iron 200y on the range but I never do it on the course. I will generally use my hybrid and 4 wood from 200 plus. I also only carry 3 wedges: 45, 51, and 57 and have no excuse for missing distances under 140 yards. The clock system is great and it’s nice to have less choices to dwell on. It helps to focus on the shot rather than the club.

if I would add another club it would be a 7 wood I think.

The last three years I have not had a club in my bag that I can hit 200 yards. I am age 77. The last 10 years I have lost at least 30 yards off the tee. Of course that relates to all the other clubs too. My old 150 club is now my 135 club. But don't feel too sorry for me. I still have a great short game and shoot my age a few times each year.

Driver, 3W, 3H usually over 200

Then my 4i hovers around the 200 mark that's about the longest club I'll use to attack the green if there is water involved. If it's just rough or bunkers, then I'll give the 3W or 3H a swing.

Driver, 3w and sometimes 4i.  At some point I may start relooking at UI's and hybrids as my 5w is only getting me 180-190 and the 3w 200-210.  I'd love to find a stick that reliably carries 220 off the deck... which I find to be the ask on well hit drives on a good many par 5's I play 😐.

I could not vote since there is not a 0 answer. I used to have 2-3 clubs, but age has me at the point of my driver sometimes go 200 but nothing else does. That is why I have three wedges since in order to score I need a great short game.

At 74 I can get my driver past 200 most of the time and if I'm lucky I can still get my 3W to 200.  Fortunately, these shots are usually straight.  We have to have a decent short game when we can't put the ball out as far as we used to.  I've been flirting with shooting my age, but haven't done it yet.

Closest I have come was a 69 when I was 66 and when I was 69 needed birdie on the 18th to shoot 69 dumped it into a green side bunker on my second shot and that was the end of that opportunity. I'll be 79 in three weeks and my chance seems pretty slim these days.

You can doooo it!  I shot 74 two years ago when I was 72.  Had a 75 last month when I was 73.  All the stars have to be aligned just right, but I hoping this is the year.

I marked down 4 BUT currently I have 1 that I half way trust to hit at a green. After my return from knee surgery a couple of months ago, it became obvious that I needed help at the top of the bag. Honestly, I was not hitting the green or even close to the green from 150, although most of the time I was having to hit out of the trees.

My first step was the driver. I ended up with the G425Max. I do not hit it as far as I occasionally hit my M5, but I’ve been getting about 240 carry with it. We’ve had so much rain it has been easy to tell the carry vs roll because if it hasn’t plugged it is a couple of feet from the pitch mark, but I’m hitting it dead straight and usually in the fairway. When I miss the fairway it is because I tried to work the ball and this just likes to go straight. This is something I can get used to

I went for a fitting a couple of weeks ago and was seriously considering Ping G425Max 3-5-7 woods and 4-5-6-7 hybrids. Then ended up buying used i500 6-P. I’m very happy with these clubs. On the launch monitor, I was hitting the i500 6 iron 176 and the G425Max 9 wood 190. 7 wood 205, 5 wood 220 and 3 wood 235. These were total distances. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, they only had the 9 wood in my specs. I was concerned that in real life the 6 iron-9Wood gap was too big, so I just bought the 9 wood. In reality, I am not hitting either of these as far as in the bay, but as mentioned the conditions here are bad. We have had rain 10 of the last 14 days.

I also was able to buy a like new Ping G410 5 wood for $180 less than a G425Max 5 wood. I’m waiting on the ox cart  it was shipped on to get here and determine if I should spend the bucks for the G425Max or G410’s.

I will say that the G425Max is working hard to pay for itself. I’ve made $127 the last 3 days with this club. I’ve only played with it 3 times and all three days I’ve used it several times and gotten birdies from 180-ish out. Yesterday I shot my lowest round since before my injury, but today I had just 1 great shot that made up for the overall pitiful performance. Short game was my problem today. Although, I did sink a 30’ putt for a birdie yesterday that won me 20 of those dollars I attributed to the 9 wood.

I’m excited about these clubs. I’m just waiting to see if the 425’s was worth $300 new. So far based on the 9 wood I think so. The flat setting on the Pings is just perfect for me. I have a Mizuno ST190 5 Wood that I hit well and it goes 210+ and is relatively reliable, and a M6 3 wood that is great off the tee, but I may hit is 220 or 120 off the deck. I went to a different store to buy the 7 wood after I hit the 9 wood so well, but they didn’t have it either. Sadly the holiday weekend will be over before I can get the 9 wood.

Technically I’ve got 4, but that 5 iron is close.

I've built my bag up to have consistent gapping through the bag as much as possible. I have an extra wedge vs a 3 hybrid or 3 wood because I found I wasn’t using them. I only ever hit a 3 wood off the tee, and I’m giving up maybe 5 yards off the tee with the 5-wood, and thats probably not the whole story because I hit the 5-wood much better.

I'm in the 6 clubs over 200 yards, but I also only play a sand wedge (no lob). I have a 2 iron and 2 hybrid that draw and cut respectively, and I use them often off the tee.

So Driver, 3 wood, 2 Iron, 2 Hybrid, 4 iron, and 4 iron for me.
