New Mod and Content Hunter Announcement

All,

After a lengthy process - far too lengthy, and that's on me...regular job has been crushing me lately - we have decided on a new Mod and Content hunter.

First, I wanted to thank all of the great applicants we had. There are truly some amazing individuals we have in our membership and reading over the applications was really impressive - the accomplishments, accolades, and skills that are possessed by our membership is what makes MGS such a special place!

Second, this was a REALLY hard decisions and ultimately the current Mods and myself had to take a hard look at our current skills and deficiencies and select a candidate that filled in our current gaps. This does not mean the other applicants were not excellent, only that our current gaps required a different skillset that was only filled by two candidates

Without further ado, our newest Moderator is ChasingSratch - now @GolfSpy_CS and our Content Hunter is TheChrisGibbs - now @GolfSpy_TCG.

Intro

I’ll keep this brief.  I’m husband, father, tenured college professor, and, of course, a golf fanatic.  My kids (son 7, daughter 5 and a half) keep me busy and my wife is my best friend.  I’m a very detail-oriented person who loves to set goals, achieve goals, set new goals, repeat.  
 

I am honored to be a part of the MGS forum moderator team.  When I joined the forum a few years ago, I was immediately cognizant of how this forum was different from all the other golf forums  I’d been a part of in the past.  I didn’t see nonsensical bickering about swing theory or putting technique. I saw a genuine community focused on a passion for golf.

I hope to continue to uphold the values and ideals that make this community great.  Thanks again, and I sincerely appreciate and value this place.

In all seriousness, I currently run a Masters program in Athletic Administration.  My students are primarily full time teachers and coaches who aspire to be athletic directors one day.  I teach everything from Sociology and Marketing to Research methods and Statistics.

I may be taking a dream job soon though.  Waiting to hear back.  I was a finalist against one other person.  Should know by end of May.

Nice, working at a college myself (not a professor). Obviously I hope you get the position. Also does this mean you are actually Dr. Chasing Scratch?

That’s awesome!!!  Golf is the perfect sport for statistical analyses!  I do feel that there is a difference between statistical significance and practical significance.  A golf ball/driver setup change might not give a golfer a statistically significant improvement in distance over their current setup, but ask any golfer if they wouldn’t take an extra 3yds with no loss in accuracy and they’d all take it.

Yes I totally agree. Not to derail the thread but I watch Mark Crossfield's videos and he is always talking about the standard deviations bleeding over between two clubs, but in actuality if you have two clubs with overlapping SDs, say two irons one going 170 and the other 165 with 5 yard deviations, then a whole 60% of the shots with the 170 club should be longer, that is nothing to sneeze at. Sure sample sizes are an issue, but if that holds up over a good test that is a big gain for a golfer.

No shot is perfect, but getting clubs that put your averages and deviations closer to ideal launch conditions is a real help, as long and I don't shank it.

My dad was a professor at USC, the real USC, sorry any Gamecocks I may have offended     He had a Masters, PHD and my mom used to tell him they stood for Piled High and Deep as you said, and that this MS was More of the Same.  She wasn't bitter at all...ha

That shank outlier is the same as that one magical 7 iron outlier that flies dead straight and carries 200yds.  But when asked, “I hit 7iron 200yds.”
