Settle a Debate: Did Tiger have one sleeve tailored shorter than the other?

TheWalrusAL

Recommended Posts

My buddies and I have been trying to settle a ridiculous debate for years. One guy swears Tiger used to have his left sleeve tailored so it was shorter than the right sleeve. Everyone thinks he’s an idiot, but I think I vaguely remember some sort of rumor about Tiger’s sleeves.  Maybe I’ve been hearing his nonsense for so long that I’m mixing it up with the story about Gretzky having his jersey sewn so it would stay tucked into his pants on one side.

Can you guys help settle the debate?

This is the first I've ever heard of that.  Not sure what the point would be.

I think the rationale was that sleeves were so long back in the late 90s and early 2000s that guys pulled the left one up so it didn’t get caught when taking the club back. There’s an old video where John Daly was playing shirtless and lifting his sleeve was so ingrained that he did the move when he wasnt wearing one.

But I agree, just wear a better fitting shirt

This pic would make it seem like it, but the shirt is hanging a little more to the right arm. It’s easy to just look at the shoulder seam on both sides and see it’s hanging down to the right... In the pic with Butch, they look the same length. Dude wore the LONGEST polo sleeves! Baggy pants! Nothing fit him well. Hal Sutton always wore those same long sleeves. Some guys pull the sleeve-up, and some tuck the armpit under, a la Zalatoris, but I’ve not read or heard that Tiger specifically had shirts tailored so the left sleeve was shorter.

That first picture is *kind of* convincing. I’ve been sending the thread out to my buddies. The guy convinced of the short sleeve is saying it was early 2000s. Appreciate the replies! I’ll send some tweets out to tigers camp; I’m sure they’ll reply haha

Counting the stripes in the first picture, I see 26 blue stripes on the left arm and 25 blue stripes on the right arm. There is the start of the 26th stripe on the right arm.  The sleeves are very close in length. The right should seam is hanging much lower on his body.

The issue with the pic, as I pointed out, is that the shirt is off-kilter to the right side. The shoulder seam is just that: it rests on the shoulder. Seeing as how his shirt is open, we can see his gold chain, the collar is laying way to his right, AND the shoulder seem has dropped way down, it does not show that they sleeves are different length. A shoulder seam would not be designed to be at one’s bicep....

no, but he used to pull up those dreadful '90's shirts because the sleeves hung down so far and were 100% cotton and they stuck to your skin with even a minor amount of perspiration.  It was an issue we all had back then.

My brother chimed in and said that he heard that’s why Tiger eventually went to the mock turtleneck and a slimmer fit. I’m still not bought in. My buddy is a goon.

Well--I can tell you how they used the sleeves--because a number of pros I knew, and good players did the same thing.  You know how when you need to work on "staying connected" people advise sticking a towel or something else under your arm?  That's what they were doing under the pretense of keeping the sleeve out of the way--it was in effect providing a reminder/connection (which would be illegal if you did it with a towel on the course) through the use of 90's "fashion".

Some still do it today. Nothing illegal about it and knowing how to use rules to your advantage goes a long way

Also, I think he was wearing XXL shirts at 140lbs. That couldn't have helped.

Just stepping as a mod here to say that, so often, golf forums have a problem with reposting the "same old threads" over and over again.

This is not a same old thread. This is new.

So a round of applause for that 🙂

I still have a few of the first polos Under Armour ever came out with, back in 2006 ish, and the sleeves are ridiculously long...and the shirt-tail is about 2" longer than the front.
