New Sand

So the course i played today put new sand in the traps recently. The starter told everyone that the course is currently playing free relief from all traps, as they are waiting for it to settle. My sand game is typically one of the strongest parts of my game, but holy cow was this stuff unplayable. Any insight to this? Has anyone experienced this before or know why its so different when its new? I know there are some variables to all sand being very different from course course, but this was something else.
