WIT (very outdated)B

Recommended Posts

I’ve got a unique bag setup. I carry driver, four hybrids, four irons, and four wedges. I have never been able to fit fairways Woods consistently. Clubs themselves are older models but I hit them well and budget is tight. I would rather play more golf than buy new equipment. Let me know your thoughts.

The newer equipment has really changed the game, if you get the right shafts.  You can pick up some good deals with past season models if you look.  I put a few bucks back until I can afford getting what I am looking for.  PGAvalue.com will give you an idea of what used clubs are worth on trade in and retail.  Normally you can take the trade in value and double that price.  Give you an idea of what to expect to pay.  Well worth the effort and a real game improver. All my clubs are Titleist and again, the shafts are the driving force, and my Titleist fitter does a great job.   Fitting is not always an option when you are on a very tight budget, but I highly recommend it if you are buying new clubs.......

I like your bag. It's what works for you. Mine is similar...I do carry a 3w and 5w but carry 2 or 3 hybrids including a 6h. Longest iron is a 7.  Plus 4 wedges.

I am getting up in age (77) and must focus on each end of the bag. Clubs for distance approaches and clubs to get up and down from inside 100 yards.

My bag is somewhat similar. I have been losing distance since I turned 65 (I turn 80 in about a month). More recently, my strength and motor coordination are slowly becoming compromised. I have been fitting and building clubs since the 1980s, so it is likely you won't recognize the non-OEM names of my components.

Driver - 12° Disukaba, Project X

Hybrids - 16, 19, 22 degree Dynacraft HyperSteel, SK Fiber TT-100

Irons - 5-9 and PW, GW Pinhawk Single Length, Hireko house brand shaft

SW - 54° PinPoint, house brand shaft

LW - 60° Titleist Vokey SpinMill, bought at yard sale and modified to fit me

Putter - ProSwing Hyper 3-ball, steel 3-bend arm-lock shaft

With several of these (Driver & hybrids especially), I went back to these older components because I hit them better and/or more consistently. I also own what I consider the best 3-wood ever (Hireko Acer XS Titanium, which is very innovative, with a SK Fiber TT-80 shaft). My good shots with this 3w go slightly farther than the 16° hybrid, but my average distance is less because I am so much more consistent with the hybrid.

Similar setup and I’m only 54.  Callaway Maverick driver, Maverick 4-wood, 4,5,6 Rogue hybrids, 6-GW PXG XF Gen 2 irons, 54/58 Cleveland RTX4 wedges.  I play on the law of averages as my 4,5,6 hybrids are way more consistent, higher ball flight and much easier to hit than 4,5 or 6 iron. I carry a 6 for punching out but rarely hit from fairway.  I play with younger players every week and no longer worry about the “looks” when I play a 6-hybrid from 170. I also have no idea how I can hit draws with all woods/hybrids but never do I draw an iron?

Nothing wrong with that bag.  I have often considered dropping 3 wood for another hybrid.  Specialty PW is becoming more of a thing in people’s bags as they offer more flexibility than a set PW.   I think more bags will look like yours in the future.

I absolutely do not see anything wrong at all with your set up at all. It does not matter the age or type of clubs as long as you can play them and have fun at doing so. I have been known to have some " outside the box" setups in my day.
