Palmetto Championship at Congaree - 2021

Recommended Posts

A first time (and likely one time) event to replace the RBC Canadian Open due to on-going C19 challenges. Congaree GC looks absolutely gorgeous. Who knows, the field may like it so much they'll lobby to get it added as a regular stop.  Technically, Rory would be the defending champion having won the 2019 RBC but it looks like he and a lot of other players are skipping this one to save some energy for the US open.  Still, we get a look at world #1 and see if he has fine tuned things to get past a Friday departure.  Besides he and Koepka, this has all the makings of a "walk-on tryouts"... my apologies Poult's... didn't see you hiding in there.

I have a grand total of one of my FTx team playing but this will be Peter (I'm in a coma) Malnati's week... so no worries 😜.  I'm predicting neither DJ or Major Koepka wins this.  Who ya picking?

I think it will be a Fleetwood/Hatton week. Both haven't had great seasons and have struggled at times, but they are fresh and looking to gain momentum leading into the US Open. Sleeper pick would have to be Sneds who has been really good this year. All in all really excited for this tournament as it should be a really fun course to watch!

Congaree GC looks awesome. I'm really happy to see this course be a stop on Tour. Unfortunately with the recent rains, I don't think its going to play as firm and fast as it is designed but if all goes well this weekend, I would much rather see this type of course on tour than somewhere like TPC Craig Ranch. After watching the US Womens Open and The Memorial hack it out of super thick rough, I'm ready to see balls roll into tough collection areas.

No predications from me this week. It's going to be a final tune up before the US Open, so anyone's guess IMO.

I think it will be someone who knows the lay of the land - a South Carolina guy.

Taylor Made Sim2  10.5 (Opened 1 click) Ventus Blue 5  R flex

Ping G410 5-9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Wilson D7 forged 6-GW -  Mamiya recoil 460 R flex

Edison Wedges 54 and 59 KBS Tour Graphite 80's

EVNRoll ER 5

Titleist Pro VIx optic yellow with revkev stamped on them

Tour Exotics 3 wood is in the bag because we are allowed 14 clubs.  It's a great club for pulling balls out of the water or from bushes - you never want to put your hand into anything in Florida unless you are absolutely certain that it's safe.  There are rare wind conditions when I might hit it off the tee on a few holes that I play.

I was listening to the background on Congaree GC on PGA Tour radio and it's pretty interesting.  A golf course only playground built by a handful of billionaires but with an slightly different charter and philanthropy focus... aimed at growing the game of golf.  It's great seeing those most fortunate, financially anyway, giving back to the community at large.

Garrick who?  Don't know about most of you, but this is the first I'd heard of him. I was listening to the conclusion of this event on Tour Radio yesterday while driving back from the PNW Meet-up.  As much as this was a Chesson Hadley meltdown, it was a Garrick Higgo win.  This guy already has quite a winning record on the Euro Tour and even raised the eyebrows of JT who played a practice round with him not too long ago and was quite impressed at his speed... that's saying something coming for Justin.

Oh, and I forgot to mention that he received a call prior to the start of Sunday's round from "Mr. Player"; who did so to wish him luck and tell him that he had won several events from 6 or more strokes behind on Sunday.  He also told him not to watch the leaderboards and simply play your game.  Now that is pretty cool and just another little insight into the synergy, comradery, and team aspect that is Team Euro... with a little South African pride 🙂.
