What training aids do you recommend to friends?

Recommended Posts

Over the years, like a lot of others, I've built a collection of training aids.  Some were helpful in improving my game,  some were just OK, and some were a stupid waste of money.  Looking back, I haven't recommended many to my golfing friends.  The one I have recommended is the Sklz Gold Flex. I bought it to use as a warm-up device before a round, and it works well at that.  Eventually, I realized that it's a good swing trainer for me.  I've recommend it to friends and at least 4 of them have one now.

So - What training aids do you recommend to your friends?

It depends on what someone is trying to fix/achieve.

Something as simple as the educator or a hangar could be a good aid. There’s a couple that are used to help with getting wrist set in the right position using a semi circle to place the wrist/forearm on at certain positions in the swing that could help.

Someone needing/looking to improve how the body works in the swing could benefit from the planemate of the g box. The g box shallower could be used in conjunction or alone. But a man alignment stick marching shaft or elbow plane could be the right aid or one could go fancy with one of several plane board or plane setup stations. Could be as simple as sticking an alignment stick inside the club and placing it on lead or trail hip and hitting balls with a full swing but at a reduced effort or just chip shots.

Somebody trying to stop sway or learning how the pressure works in the swing could use downunderboard, the balance board or as simple as an alignment stick in the ground in certain spots and angles.

For the most part there’s no bad training aids but rather bad use of them

I have built many things as well as purchased many. The only one I would actually recommend would be the Orange Whip. Similar to the Sklz Gold Flex. These are something you can always use no matter what your ability is. Meaning you won't grow out of it.

- Swingyde: probably the best training aid I own. When my ball flight gets erratic, it usually fixes the problem.

- Smart ball

A teacher -

Best swing aid there is -

After that certainly something for alignment and a somewhat trained eye to be sure you are doing it right - feet, hips, shoulders down the intended line.

Ive recommended Superspeed to lots of people, no one has taken me up on it. Despite the fact that they often comment on how much farther I’m hitting it.

Ive recommended personal launch monitors - if you know the windows you’re trying to hit or have a place to practice with gamer like golf balls they are very helpful.

i think there are a number of training aids that are good if people know what they are trying to accomplish, pick the right one and then actually use them as prescribed.

From my experience that combination is highly unlikely.

Taylor Made Stealth 2 10.5 Diamana S plus 60  Aldila  R flex   - 42.25 inches

Srixon ZX5 MK II  5-GW - UST recoil Dart 65 R flex

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Best one I have used is a shoe box... placed outside the ball line maybe 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch from the toe of your club at address.   It perfectly lines up with your target line and you immediately know if you are swinging inside-to-square-to-inside.  The closer you put it, the better chance you get of hitting it out of the center.   Double that with a towel or equivalent to make sure your AofA is a couple of degrees down and your low-point is beyond the ball, and its very, very effective.  Nice thing is, you won't damage your club if you hit a shoe box.   I suspect an Amazon box would work as well.  There:  there is your use to up-cycle all of your home-delivery boxes.

Other than that, I can recommend a launch monitor. I purchased a SkyTrak.   But, even the less expensive ones are useful.   I have the SwingCaddie SC100.   You can hit into a net or hit in your yard or another open space -- especially drilling on partial swing wedges and scoring irons in the 20 - 100 yard range.   Next to putting, it's probably the lowest hanging fruit to get your scores and handicap down.   Missed approach shots.

My two best training aids

1. Alignment stick - when the snow in my driveway melts, I use one of the driveway marker reflector sticks as an alignment aid on the range.

2. Two pennies. Place on on either side of the ball on the putting green. When looking over the ball, one should see equal amounts of each penny. Then you know your eye is centered directly above the ball.

I also use the Sklz Gold Flex as a warm up, golf swing trainer, and for exercise. In addition I would recommend a Strike Right Golf Swing Trainer (https://slingitgolf.com/golf-swing-instructional-system-store/strike-right-golf-swing-trainer/)   If you want to train an under, out and up swing path, the Strike Right will help do that as it also helps fix the over the top move. Finally I recommend Putt Out for putting.

I am a big fan of putting gates for the putter and ball to make sure I am hitting the center of the face and starting the ball online.   I’d also recommend a line or half colored balls to see if ball is rolling end over end.  ExPutt is a great tool for learning putting distance control if you can’t get to an actual green.

I agree with @revkev A good instructor, alignment sticks and a launch monitor. In addition to those, I've had good success with the Tour Striker Planemate and Smartball and a golf club for stretching to increase flexibility and ability to turn.

It looks like a good day to play golf!

Orange Whip fan here, most recent aid is a putting mirror.  So simple to use and it gets your eye line and shoulders square to target line.  Love it.

Same two for me. Before teeing off my buddies all take turns with my Orange Whip to warm up.  I use my daily and hit it past them regularly. Tried to convince them to get their own, but don't mind being the big stick. Low putter in the group too and only one with a mirror.  Go figure.

I've answered this question many times on here and my answer never waivers. Big Moss putting green and a putting mirror. You can use them all year, regardless of weather and you can do multiple drills that impact the club you use most often during a round.

This is really the most important aspect to any training aid, commit to using it! if you aren't going to incorporate into your practice routine on a regular basis you are wasting your money. I spend at least 15-minutes 3+ times a week on my practice green.

I like the Lag Shot , really teaches lag

Jury is still out on this one for me - but I am sticking with it and the videos have been worth the purchase price, for me at least.

This is turning into a very good and fun thread - I was tempted to mention golf tees which I use like the shoe or amazon (nice touch) box aid mentioned earlier - I didn't because I thought of that one more as a drill but I do use two golf tees when I'm having issues, in order to get my club path straightened out.  It's not an aid per se but I also try to do opposites whenever I have trouble - I have this move where I drop the club into the slot and hit draw - think old Patrick Reed swing or Brittany Lincicome - in fact my teacher will put a video of Brittany up next to my swing when we look at video together - so when I get off kilter - trying to hit three quarter fades with 7 iron is a huge help - throw the tees in to keep the club head in order and they become my gadget of choice.

Aside from the typical orange whip, mirror, etc. Due to a recent wrist injury I got a sklz smart glove. A bunch of my high handicap friends got it and love it.

You should try cross-fitting. I have been playing golf for five years now, and I can easily say that I have always improved my skill, but the only thing I was lacking was the physique. I decided to change that, and now I’ve been consistently training for seven months, and I’ve never felt so good. My game improved drastically, and now I’m feeling that I’m progressing. One day while I was browsing through the internet, I ran into a website https://lucasjamespersonaltraining.com/mobile-personal-trainer/. that changed my whole life. I was able to meet the best personal trainer ever, and he transformed me. That is why I would love to recommend it to everyone who is facing a similar issue.
