how often do you use 58* for partial shots?

Recommended Posts

For me a lot of when I use 58 for the 30-40yd partial shot depends on course/hole setup. If I have to land it and stop it quickly I’m more likely to fly it with the 58 than hit a traditional pitch with a lower lofted club.

If I had to ballpark it, I’d say 7/10 times I’m using a lower lofted club and playing a traditional bump and run on those partial shots.

I’m trying to use it more often on shots that require less than a 50%!sand wedge… worked well today for two kick in birdies on par 5s… for a 50 yard shot, I like the 58.

I could probably do the same thing with my 54, but I’ve decided to hit that frOm 75-100 yards and the 58 from 75 and in.

Great question.  I've been trying for the past year to use a wedge matrix so that I know my yardages for 1/2, 3/4 and full wedge shots with my lob and sand wedges.  I find that it helps to take some of the guess work out of the shot and I can swing a bit more confidently.  For pitch/chip shots, I prefer to hit my 54* on just about everything except if I have to take it upstairs and stop very quickly.

Pretty much I use my 58* for 110 in to about 70, or 100% swing to a 70% swing, so the majority of wedge approaches I make are hit with my 58*.  I very rarely use it in the trap because I want the higher bounce of the 54*. The 58* scares me around the green, so it’s never used there. Ever.

Agreed. There will be days where I'm really feeling good with my short game and work in the 58 when I want a little less roll out, but generally I reach for the 54 anytime I'm chipping around the green.

I do use the 58 almost exclusively out of bunkers, but my bounce/grinds between the 54 and 58 are almost identical so that's just preference.

Otherwise, the 58 scales from 50-110ish yards when I'm swinging well. I have no issues taking a full cut with the 58. I don't play a clock system or anything like that so it's just a lot of feel.

My wedges are 52-56-60.  I use the 60 for most shots from about 90 yards in.  I'm comfortable moving the handle forward to deloft the face and hit a lower chip, I'm comfortable opening my stance to hit a high lob.  I'm reasonably decent using the 60 from 30 yards, from 60 yards, for most of those partial shots, unless there's a specific reason to hit the ball lower.  My 56 has more bounce, so its my go-to club form the sand, as well as for shots around 100 yards.

None of this means I won't use a lower lofted club (sometimes as low as a 7 or 8 iron) around the greens for less carry and more run-out, but my "normal" shot is some variant of a pitch with the 60.

Its good to understand all of the options, and to be able to use them effectively.

My 58* Zipcore gets 62-70 yards on full swings and I use it exclusively as my sand wedge. For partial shots I prefer my 54* and 50* Zipcores. That said, if I am hitting off the back of an elevated green, the 58* is used for 1/4 or 1/2 swings.

I would suspect this one depends a good deal upon how far one hits the ball and the type of course, conditions that he faces regularly.  I carry 53, bent to 54 and 59 as my wedges - gap and PW are a part of my iron set.

I hit the 54 90 and the 59 75.  I'm reasonably proficient with the 59 down to around 40 yards and will use it from 75 to 40 fairly regularly.  I practice those shots a lot though.  I never, ever, ever hit a flop shot on the golf course, ever.  Why?  Because I've learned through time that more bad things will happen than good.  Way better chance of getting up and down by hitting it 10 to 15 feet past and making a putt than trying a flop.  I do practice them because it's fun and it makes me look like I'm really good - I'm not that good though so I take my medicine.

Bottom line I think I use the 59 for actually approach shots about 25 percent of the time on most of the courses that I play.  That's about to change as my league course has some shorter par 5's and one short par 4 where there's no big risk in banging the ball down as close to the green as possible on the second shot.

I used to rely heavily on my LW when I had a 54-58 setup.  I would use it probably 10 times more frequently than my 54.

After realizing a weakness in my game I now use my GW first, SW second, and LW only if I have to.  I currently use 52, 56, and 60 degree wedges.  I really love the way ball reacts with the 52* wedge.  If I don’t need to go up and stop it super quickly, I’ll use that.  If the 52 seems like not a good fit…. Need to get up over a bunker, need to get up a steep embankment, or some reason that I need more height, I’ll use the 56.  That also includes some thicker rough.

If I really need a specialty shot, bunker play, deep thick rough, flop shot, etc.  That’s where I’ll use the 60*.  I almost never take a full or even 3/4 swing with it.

I’m learning that I get much better results when I use this process to select my shorter shots.

Like just about everyone else says, very much a conditions-based question.  58 (mine's bent to 59) is my go-to from basically 90 in for a lot of shots, but wind, the lie, room on the green...tons of variables will impact the club.

Playing almost exclusively public courses, my 54 (bent to 55) and my 58 have differing amounts of bounce so I have options.  If the bunkers are nice and fluffy, the 54 with 12 degrees of bounce comes out.  Harder less sandy bunkers, the 58 comes out.  58 is also my go-to club to chip with unless it's a long chip and I need more run out.  I've hit one too many chips with the 58 where I needed to hit a relatively long one, and because I ended up striking it a little harder it actually checked up and stopped much earlier than I wanted.

Maybe a post for the equipment I'm thinking about thread, but I am keeping my eye out for a 58 or 60 SM8 in black in the L grind.  I've got an M grind 58 right now, but I lay the face open a lot and am feeling like I've got a little too much bounce in the wedge for that shot sometimes.  Although with it bent a degree strong it's only 7 degrees of bounce...

I run a 60* and use it with great frequency inside 50 yards. I rarely take a full swing with it as it's easy to start losing control but around the greens it's money. It really depends on what shot I'm using it for and how much green I have to work with. I'm generally confident in my ability to hit low spinny shots and high flop shots using the bounce on the wedge around the green. If I'm not feeling confident, I will use my 56* when possible. I highly recommend the PM grind wedges from Callaway for high lofted wedges. The amount of bounce and sole grind along with the full face grooves makes it so versatile and forgiving. Full face grooves may look weird but they really can save your bacon on shots out and up on the toe.

I strongly recommend that anyone who wants to get good with a wedge should really try learning to use and understand the bounce of a wedge. Once you understand how to properly use the bounce, you will find confidence in virtually every shot you take around the green and there won't be any wedge loft that scares you. It took me a long time before I really understood how to use the bounce and it is kind of a "feel" shot. However, once you get it figured out, you got it.

most all shots from 75-80 yards and under into the green.  I chip with it alot and use it out of harder bunkers.  for softer bunkers use the 54 since the bounce is higher.

So for those that use a single club vs multiple, do you guys have different grinds or bounce angles on your wedges?

For me, all three of my wedges have different grinds and bounce angles.  I do that because I do find a difference on a really heavy or tight lie.  Or if I need a fuller swing I know my 52* or 56* have a sole that will lead to more consistent shots than my 60*.

When I was using a 54-58 combo both of my wedges were very close in bounce and had the same grind.  At that time I basically always used the 58*

I use a 60* instead of a 58*, and I use it almost exclusively from around 70 yards and in.  The exception would be a long bunker shot where I might hit a 54* or 50* depending on the distance and what type of shot I'm going to attempt.

My 58 is my 95 and under club I can push it to 100 but then it’s a low spinny shot. I love using it around the green although I do use my 54 around the green too I can use either or honestly I just mix them up or have a distance I really like with one or the other.

My current setup is a 52-58 combo of Cleveland CBX wedges, which didn't have much in the way of bounce and grind options in the first generation, so club choice is a matter of distance relative to the green. 105-75 I'll use the 52, from 75-25 I'll use the 58, and when I'm inside of 25 yards I prefer to use the 52 (unless I'm short-sided and need to come in steeper).

For my CCC5 Snakebite wedges I went with the classic grind in the 52 (12° of bounce) since I want to be able to comfortably take a full swing with it. In the 58 I went with the versatile grind (8° of bounce) which gives me enough bounce to comfortably chip (I tend to come in steep) but still manipulate the face angle as needed. That club also has full-face grooves, so I'm interested to see how I get along with it.

I have the classic grind on the 52* MIM Black... its awesome.  It works great for me on full and partial swings (I tend to be too steep if my swing is off_ and its surprisingly versatile around the green.  You're going to like it a lot I think!

Pre SCOR I had three wedges - I used an old Ping Eye 2  W as my gap wedge - I was such a good chipper with that club!!!!  I had a very high bounce sand wedge that was a 54 bent to 55 and a 60 that was low bounce.  Once I went with SCOR I had V soles on my wedges which provide multi bounces depending upon which part of the sole that you wish to use so I don't worry about it.  I never really worried about grind but that was at a time when it wasn't talked about.

I typically use my 58* for 70 yards and in, sometimes I'll use my 54* in that range as well, but mostly just stick to the 58*.  I'm really liking the spin (drop and stop) I get with all my wedges, but 54* from 90-70 is money.

I have a 58 K grind with high bounce for bunker shots and deep lies around the green, the grind helps me get out of trouble. I then have a 54 S grind mid bounce for the shots from 50-80 out. S grind allows me to have a more straight back and through swing.

Currently gaming a 52/58 setup, so basically anything inside of 50 yards is with the 58 degree. I'd wager as much as 80% of my shots inside of 50 yards are with the 58. I rarely use it for a full-swing and often prefer my 52 for shots 50-100 yds. The only other times I'm not using my 58 inside of 50 yards is if there's a back and/or uphill flag and trying to judge flying it all the way to the hole just wouldn't make sense based on where I might miss.

There's one hole at my home course that's often pretty difficult to hit the green on approach (I'm typically 180-200 out plus a pretty significant uphill grade) with a three-tier back-to-front green. 58 is rarely the best option here if I've missed the green, unless I'm in the greenside bunker.

I play a lot of “in between” shots with all of my wedges. I’ve been using the Pelz Method for my short game for a long time. Each of my 4 wedges has 3 “stock positions” then I can alter them by flighting the ball high or low.

Basic shots with my 58* wedge

7 o’clock position = 20 yards

9 o’clock position = 50 yards

full swing = 80 yards

i don’t chip much with my 58* unless I need to hit a flop and I hardly ever hit it from the bunker unless I’m extremely short sided.

Have Vokey SM7s in the 54* 14/F and 58* 08/M bounces - and in almost all situations, I find myself grabbing the 54* and applying distance control with my swing. I'm realizing the bounce of the 54* just suits my eye and swing. It's really helped me in keeping those errant approaches to the green ... at worst a bogey or at best a par.

The only time I grab the 58* is when I'm on the fringe and the pin is on the near side without much green to work with, and simply need a delicate chip and roll out.

The wedges are just over 2 years old and I've been looking hard at Cobra's MIM wedges in the versatile grind and PING's Glide 3.0 as well. All 3 of my Sunday golf buddies have the Mizuno T20s, and I just find the leading edge on those to be too rounded.

When I had my free fitting at True Spec I was fit into that 54F grind as well, but they said 58D for me... I guess I dig a little.

I loved the way the F grind and high bounce got through the turf and moved my strike point lower.  Just gave me tons of spin and control.  I feel the same way when I hit the MIM Black 52* with the 12* bounce Classic Grind.  Visually I think it's narrower than the Vokey, but more rounded and seems to perform the same for me.  Then my 56* Versatile grind can really be opened up and used anywhere.  I think those two would be a really good comp to what you have in the bag now.

The T20s and Ping Glides have me curious.  I'm almost always a homer for Vokey's, but the wet wedge testing MGS has done has me thinking.

I did try the Mizuno ES21 and was very disappointed with the feel.
