Best chipping advice you've ever been given?

Recommended Posts

I turn 30 today, and I've been playing the best golf I've ever played. I credit the progress I've made over the past two years almost exclusively to my short game. My putting has been lackluster per usual with very little dropping in for birdies, but one piece of advice I was given has made me so much better:

Don't two-chip.

I was playing with one of my closest golf buddies and he makes no claim to be the first person to say this, but the saying holds and has given me so much progress just saying it back to myself. What's more important to avoid than not three-putting? Two-chipping. And he was right. Don't go for the tucked pin if you're not confident in a flop over a bunker. Get it on the green and two-putt.

What's the best short game advice you've been given that makes a huge impact on your game?

The pro at my course told me to keep things as simple as I can.  When chipping, just use a putting motion but change the club and choke down to the end of the grip.  The further away from the green you get just move your hands up the shaft a bit and make a larger putting stroke.  Change the club from a SW to say an 8 iron depending on how you want the ball to come out.  Play around with it and see what feels comfortable to you.

Being 3-4 ft past the pin is just as good as being the same distance short. Follow that and you will find yourself closer to all pins when chipping.

On this same note is what I attribute my better than average short game. Making a committed swing knowing that if I go past the hole I can get a full or partial read of my upcoming putt. No shot can accidentally go in if it never gets to the hole.

I've watched so many YouTube videos, and almost all of them seem to center around ensuring you use the wedge's bounce. To do that, most of them recommend placing the ball just a hair closer to your left foot and keeping your shaft as vertical as possible when setting up AND when impacting the ball. This prevents coming in too steep and fatting the ball and getting the blade stuck in the turf.

I also really like the "swing like a putter, just firmer" advice. No hip or leg movement and not too much wrist action.

Pick no more than 3 clubs and practice chipping with them for hours. Use only 2 clubs if you can, practice a lot with them so you know their trajectory and rollout. Don't get fancy. Get the ball on the green and rolling as soon as possible.

Funny you say "use only 2 clubs if you can," because I actually got rid of my Lob Wedge and use solely my Gap and my 56* exclusively. I'm a 'feel' chipper and do much better opening the face of the 56* than I do with any Lob Wedge I've ever owned.

That's what I'd say too. And use the least amount of loft necessary, so if you hit thin your miss won't be as bad. The downside is I chip better with a 7-iron (circumstances permitting) than a high lofted wedge. When I need to use my 60° wedge, I'm basically guessing distance... 🤔

I read the "don't chunk it or blade it" reply above and it's very true. But, when you are chipping (close to the green and wanting more roll than carry), it's better to error a little thin than chunky. When you are pitching (bigger swing, more carry) it's better to be a little chunky than thin.

That was a tongue in cheek response from me...lol.  Other than those two things... anything that works for you is good.

For chipping (not pitching over rough, bunkers, etc.), most golfers I've seen fall into one of two camps:

1.  Use the same club for every shot.  The carry to roll ratio is usually pretty consistent, and you pick a spot to land your ball based on how far away you are, then roll it the rest of the way.

2.  Get the ball rolling as soon as you can.  Dump it on the front of the green and roll it the rest of the way to the hole.  You pick the club based on how far you want to carry the ball and how it will roll out.

I'm the latter - that's how I learned to play.  Dumping the ball on the front of the green is generally fairly easy; you just need to pick the right club.  My daughter hates to watch me chip; she thinks its ugly (especially when I get it close).

She's the former - she hits everything with her 56.  I have a small heart attack every time she's around a green, but she's pretty good at it.

Figure out which way works for you and do what @Kenny B said.

I'm in camp #1 along with your daughter.  Yes, dumping the ball on the front of the green is fairly easy, but I could never figure out what club to use.  Distance to the green varies; distance of roll varies; green slopes uphill or downhill; not much break, or a lot of break; ball reacts differently off my wedges than it does off my irons; all factor into what club to use.  I was always way short or way long, including off the green past the pin.

I generally use my 60º, but will use my 54º if I'm further away or in thick rough.  I spend most of my pitching/chipping practice with my 60º, and I know how much effort to put into a shot for a specific distance.  I can also hit a low, mid or high shot to to get more roll or take a lot of undulations in the green out of play.  My wife has flipped me off when I make one; I consider it a term of endearment... I'm #1 with her!!  🤣

Yeah, I honestly don't think there's a right or wrong approach to it.  It's really all about how you see the shot in your mind.  If you can see it, you can hit it.

For me it's boiling down to more practice as the pro told me that you can never practice chipping enough..

My pre-game routine now involves a good 30 minutes on the chipping green, just throwing balls down around the green and playing them all as the ball lies. If you tee the ball up, in the same place, when you practice you'll not be learning about how to play from good/bad/terrible lies. I'm also concentrating on using my 52° for 90% of my chip shots so I use that club for 90% of my practice. Throw in a few 60° shots just in case I need one..

The one advice I got that really helped was how far you take your club back your swing should end in the equal distance .. so if I bring my club to my waist on my back swing the club should end on the other side of my waist

I was such a horrible chipper that I lobbed everything as close to the stick as I could.

I once had the opportunity to get a brief chipping lesson form a prominent LPGA player back in the 70s,

but it didn't help.

It isn't too hard from what I gather given that almost everybody does try to get the ball onto the ground quickly.

I just found the motion to be more awkward and anti-intuitive than just lobbing the ball as far as possible,

but lobbing is said to reduce one's opportunity to hole out and probably does..

Penick's advice is great, get the ball rolling as soon as possible. If you have to chip with a 3i to do this, so be it. But one of the few golf lessons I've had is chipping with a 7 iron with the same idea. Once I was able to put it in action I've used this shot successfully for years.

I actually read similar advice in a Golf Magazine article(several years ago).  Had struggled with control.. wrist break.. all of it.  Best advice I ever received.  I don't go as low as 8 iron.  But depending on how much roll I need once it hits  the green, I am anywhere from 56-9iron.  Putting stroke  hands forward to impart spin to check it if needed, or neutral to get more roll out.  I try to land the ball the same distance onto the green and use a different club to obtain the right amount of roll out I need.  Best advice I EVER READ!!

works like a charm!  I like how it takes out a lot of different variables.  Just keep the same motion and change the club, not the stroke.

I know.  I was getting 45 degree toe shots, trying to swing harder with SW, with wrist break in there.  It was a disaster.  Biggest reason I was able to get from 90, down around mid-low 80's.

The short game is the key.  So much can go wrong with the swing, so keeping it as simple as possible is clutch.  I only break my wrist out of bunkers or if I am trying a flop shot, which is not often.

Just toss the ball to the hole.  The club is just an extension of your hands/arms.  There is no technique thoughts to worry about and it allows for external/target focus. Here's just one example:

For me it's boiling down to more practice as the pro told me that you can never practice chipping enough..

If you buy in to the Strokes Gained-based strategy systems, chipping is important, but tee shots and approach shots are generally seen as more important.

That being said... nearly everyone can find a way to practice short shots at home without a ton of investment.  So there's much less of an excuse to ignore it.

What type of lie is important especially closer to the hole like inside 20 yards.
Over 20 yards generally standard pitch

inside 20 yards chipping , putting , flops   The possibilities are endless   The lie and the green shape /slope determines what I like if I chip, putt, flop etc   Sometimes there too many choices and I “flob” a short shot cause there too many going in the head and can’t decide
