He said you should chip with your wrists in casts, and he actually had casts on as he hit one beautiful chip after another. Great way to visualize using the big muscles for the short game. The only time I want wrists involved is when it has to get up quickly with spin. The rest of the time it's dead wrists and get the ball on the ground as soon as possible. Ever since, I get up and down more than pretty much anyone else I play with. If you watch the Team Taylormade videos on YouTube, Jason Day does this exact chipping method. Rory actually comments on how simple but effective it is to basically use a larger putting stroke for every single chip. Though Jason Day isn't currently a top 10 player, I think using his approach over a 'feel' approach is important for players who don't have oodles of feel. JeremyD
as a kid I learned to chip with a 9 iron since it was the most lofted club I had. As I got older it became the 56/60. I was streaky. I wanted to get down to a PW or 52 for chipping, and I struggled. I follow Collin McCarthy, who gives some tips here and there. One thing he said was feet as close together as possible and weight 50/50. Just a smooth, almost putting stroke (as others above have mentioned) I thought he was nuts. While it may not work for all, it's been wonders for me in the past few weeks, especially using my 52 or PW. thechrisgibbs 1 Quote When my wife asked if I wanted to leave Maine and move to where she grew up, I couldn't say no to Pinehurst, NC. Fairwayguy2
Two tips I keep in mind that have improved my game. "Strike the match" Feel if your club is coming through the ball like striking a match, this keeps your club head accelerating. Point your right shoulder at the target. This forces you stance open a tad. I keep my weight 60-40 on the front foot. thechrisgibbs 1 Quote Driver: Callaway Big Bertha Fusion 3wood: Titleist 917F 5 wood: Titleist 917F irons Titleist T350 5-pe hybrids Taylormade 4 wedges: Titleist SM8 50/54/58 putter: Scotty Cameron Newport slotback Link to comment
den748
Best 2 tips I got were: 1) Weight in front foot. I actually stand on one foot as a pre shot chipping routing to remind myself to do this. 2) Always use the same club. I know there are times where chipping with a 7 iron make sense but I don't have the time to get proficient in it. If I'm not confident it will show in my swing because I'll be thinking through the entire swing. Outside of a necessary lob shot (tucked pin having to go over a bunker) I always use my 54. It gives me more predictable results as I know how it will spin and land and roll out. The less I have to think about the better. thechrisgibbs 1 Quote Driver: Epic Flash Sub-Zero Project X HZRDUS Smoke 3 Wood: M6 UST Mamiya Proforce V2 3 Hybrid: M6 UST Mamiya Proforce V2 4 Hybrid : M4 Stock Stiff Shaft Irons: P790 (5I-AW) - 2 deg strong - Nippon Modus3 105 Gram/Stiff 60 Degree Wedge: Vokey SM7 - AMT Black/Stiff 54 Degree Wedge: RTX Zip Core Putter: Sigma G Tyne Putter Ball: ProV1x Tracked by: Link to comment

It actually really hurt my ability to read green speeds on bump and runs because I only knew of flop shot turf interaction. I should have clarified, but I only use this method on short chip shots around the greens where if you hit it fat it won't matter much. There's a Phil Mickelson youtube video out there about chipping that's really good, very basic and easy to understand. I've shared with many friends and they said it was very helpful. thechrisgibbs 1 Quote I'm a hockey player playing golf today. txgolfjunkie
Best advice came from my junior college coach post playing days... Ground club on toe (think Steve Stricker putting setup) with a broom/putting stroke. Any strike on the sweet spot could come out hot with a lot of spin or normal with good runout. A strike out on the toe gives a more consistent flight and roll out. It works with any club but I find myself with either a pitch, gap, sand or lob wedge. If you want the ball to fly high and land soft, keep the shaft vertical. The more run out you want, the more shaft lean you put on it. You can almost hood the club a bit to get a lot of roll out. You do kind of stand like Bryson putts (broom-like with rigid arms) but it's been the best chipping advice I've had to date. thechrisgibbs and Haro 2 Quote Cobra Connect 5 Competitor - Team Chad King Radspeed 10.5* w/ Hzrdus RDX Blue 60 6.5 tipped 1/2" - Peacoat/Red King Radspeed Big Tour 3 Wood w/ Hzrdus RDX Blue 70 6.5 Tipped 1/2" King Radspeed Tour 5 Wood w/ Motore X F1 70 X Flex King Utility 4 21* w/ Tensei Pro White 100 X Flex King Tour MIM Copper Irons 5-G w/ AMT White X100 Onyx King MIM Black Wedges 55* & 60* w/ AMT White X100 Onyx Spider SR Pro V1x Left Dash Lefty Link to comment
