Dude, I'm getting a Mevo+!

Recommended Posts

I'm monitoring these emails as well. I have all but settled on the MEVO+ now that the Bushnell/Gc3 pricing is out. I can push the net back in my garage and have space for full indoor mode. With space being the main downside to these and not being an issue, it seems to be the only system with full functionality and limited sim use without a subscription model. Unless you are in the $8000-$10000 price range and buying a lump sum license like TGC 2019 which is then driving more cost to buy a gaming PC and projector instead of running MEVO+ on your phone or Ipad.

Some years ago to improve and avoid dealing with a two way, I decided to go with a draw as primary shot pattern.

With Mevo+ I watch three parameters as guide or rough estimate when I practice a draw: Launch H (Face=R), Spin Axis (Path=L) and Lateral (Curve)…

Screenshot is a 50* degree gap wedge, on course I’ve seen it draw about 1 foot draw on a 100 yard shot…. I watch those three parameters on all clubs…

My highly uneducated guess it that it has something to do with the orientation of the wave length's the radar is using. From my back ground in meteorology they send out waves in the horizontal and vertical orientation. I bet there is some advantage to a different orientation or using multiple that they are adding. Just a guess though.

From a Mevo Facebook group I'm in, it's supposed to incorporate the camera (presumably, the one on the device) to help it read some of the low speed shots (short chips and putts).

Fusion Tracking is Flightscope’s most advanced tracking available currently in the X3 and xI Tour but not Mevo+…

What’s does that really mean more accuracy to current Mevo+ parameters?

Or does it mean Mevo+ will have face, path & face to path data parameters? Verse the manual approach showed above….

x3, xI and Mevo+ compared:

Saw the announcement - and I have no reason to doubt them…. But how can a camera 10 or so feet behind the ball at impact measure face to path and face to target?  I hope it can/want it to.  I’m sure someone (MGS moderators…) will find a way to do some comparisons.

Most of these parameters are already measured and not shown, I think. Basically just unlocking them now for the additional money. I'm sure the camera is used for some stuff, but things like club path and face to path would have had to be measured to calculate the other stuff the Mevo+ gave you already.

Compared to what?

Possibly Flightscope has been tracking club head data longer than any vendor?

I think the closet comparison might be -- GC2 with HMT I think was about $12k at one point.  I know a friend that had at home about 5 years ago a GC2 and used a Flightscope for club head data, he did that instead of buying HMT. Fusion tracking is doppler combined with camera tracking. Trackman does club data for sure.

I use Mevo+ at home, and Ill order the Pro package in January, but I also use Trackman at the range and club. I have not noticed any differences at all, as to what I’m working on in the golf swing. I’ve also used the Quad, and I’m still working with the same golf swing concept's.

As to accuracy seems to me Mevo+ with fusion, pro package with new data and the Titleist Pro V1 RCT would be a great test coming in January.

The New Data Parameters Include:

  • Club path

  • Face to path

  • Face to target

  • Vertical swing plane

  • Horizontal swing plane

  • Low point

  • Dynamic loft

  • Vertical descent angle

  • Curve

  • Speed profile

  • Acceleration profile

That's allot of data any golf instructor in the world could get from a player located anywhere.

Pick mine up Monday! Going to be a fun winter, especially with all these announcements. I am looking forward to reviews on the Titleist RCT balls and the pro package. Can't wait to have horizontal ball data and shot shape.

With the sale, I saved over $600 compared to SkyTrak. Will be interesting to see how ST responds as it is quickly becoming an option only for those who don't have space to capture ball flight.

As a Mevo+ owner, I'm definitely waiting on reviews before even considering the $1,000 upgrade. The basis of my skepticism is the camera that's built in to the Mevo+:

I'm sorry, but I just find it hard to believe that this camera is capable of adding much by way of useful, accurate data. I'm absolutely willing to be correct and I genuinely hope I'm wrong. But this camera seems like something from an early flip phone, not something that is going to be useful for careful analysis.

Maybe Fusion can use the camera of the phone that you're using to collect the Mevo+ data, but then you've got issues of inconsistent alignment, etc.

Again, I hope I'm wrong. I expect in the upcoming days, they'll be useful reviews online of the new Fusion incorporation (the new data points aren't expected until the new year, I think).

It’s the same camera as the X3, which is $15k but the X3 tracks 55 parameters… Mevo+ tracks 27….

But it’s also more than just a camera?

Fusion tracking combines 3D tracking radar and camera/mage processing for data.

It’s basically all in the pro package video…

Have had success with partial wedges down to 40 yards and up to full 7 irons. First driver test was the usual 3500 rpm balls at around 150 mph ball speed that carry 200 yards. Now experimenting with positioning the radar and changing settings in the software to see if I can get something reasonable.

I hit a ball 260 carry on a GC quad in my lesson Saturday, and regularly hit 250 carry on my SC200 radar in the same hitting bay.

E6 driving range on "short indoor" mode seemed to work much better than the FS Golf App on "Indoor" mode for driver readings. Had multiple balls in the 2300-2500 rpm range which is normal for me. Still a few suspect readings around 1300 which was a bit off the toe, but didn't feel that bad. Now experimenting to see if launch angle is correct due to mat and tee height.

The Titleist RCT balls already look like a worthwhile investment to avoid aligning the metal dot with the target on every swing.

The battery charging and electronics are a bit of a joke on these units. Left it plugged it overnight and it had a 3% charge the next day. Got some support saying I need to remove and replace the rechargeable internal battery to "reset" it if you run it out of power. The charging error indicator would flash intermittently during charging and isn't listed in the reference guide that comes with the unit. The general advice is not to run them off wall power to reduce electrical interference and then the internal battery will barely last 1h when using the E6 software. This necessitates the use of an external USB power pack to run the unit. But apparently the USB pack shouldn't be used to charge the unit when powered off as it won't provide a full charge. Another recommendation was purchase a replacement internal battery. They supposedly will stop charging the battery once the temp drops low enough as well.

Performance has been positive on partial wedges and full irons/hybrids which is where I think this unit will provide the most value. It will be interesting to see how chipping changes with the Fusion tracking upgrade. In general, all shot shapes have been correct based on feel and face impact.

There are enough minor issues to consider the cost differential in going up to a GC3/LaunchPro or Uneekor system. But being the only mid level system that can do full sim play with no recurring subscription is a huge plus.

These have been on my list of things to buy as well.

I'm hoping to get my indoor setup finished in the next two weeks or so. Life has been getting in the way, but with the weather turning I'm not going to be able to hit outside for much longer.

I've have not had the same battery issues you have had. I'll be curious to see how spin compares once I get indoors with good balls. The last two times out of the range my irons have recorded ridiculously low spin (4,000 RPM 9 irons), but on the range it's tough to know if that's on the radar unit or the balls.

One plus side - the range I visited the last two times out has an extremely elevated tee box. With the original Mevo the height measurements were all incorrect as the unit would record the huge elevation change. No issue with the Mevo+ with peak heights across the bag in the 90-110 feet range.

Had my first hiccup with the Mevo+ last week. I went out to the garage Wednesday night and could not get the Mevo+ to connect to my Samsung Galaxy s10e. The FS Golf for Android app had updated Tuesday night to version 3.0.44. Previously it worked great.

I ended up downgrading to version 3.0.38 this weekend and had no issues with the radar.

I filed a ticket with FS support last Thursday and after some back and forth they confirmed the issue today. They will be releasing another update to resolve the issue in the coming days.

In the meantime, a co-worker lent me an older iPhone that I'm going to use to try out the E6 Connect simulation at some point soon.

@edingc by the way my wife just upgraded from an s10e to an S21ultra for 300 after trade in. Verizon is having a crazy trade in deal right now. 650 trade in value for most phones. Also, any update on your Titleist RCT balls? I think I got a shipping update they should be here in another week or so.

I'll have to look at upgrading the phone soon. For now, the iPhone is working great. I tried the sim features on it and it was a little underwhelming on such a small screen but might be fun as the winter drags on.

I believe my RCT balls will be here this weekend. Looking forward to them, mostly so that I can hopefully get spin readings without needing to hit the same spot on the ball each time. I cracked a second ball today. They're just not meant to be hit over and over again like that.

  • 2 months later...

So I took the plunge and ordered the Pro Package on release day. I was going to wait for reviews, but I figured I'd end up ordering it down the road anyway.

I wanted to give it a go last night because we had 40+ degree weather (no garage heat necessary!), but I couldn't figure out how to get the Pro Package key to activate successfully.

Kudos to Jason from FS Mevo support who resolved my issue through chat this morning:

  1. If using cell phone, disable mobile data.
  2. Connect to the Mevo+ wireless network through the FS Golf app.
  3. Click on "Activate Mevo+ Pro Package" from the app's settings screen.
  4. Disconnect from the Mevo+ wireless and connect to a working wireless connection to the Internet.
  5. Return to the FS Golf app and enter the Pro Package activation code.
  6. Re-connect to the Mevo+ wireless connection to complete activation.

Don't forget to re-enable your mobile data when finished.

So I'm right on the precipice of ordering a Mevo+.   Thanks to you guys for posting all your thoughts so far.  I have a few questions.

  • Do any of you use it primarily or extensively outiside?
    • And if you do, what perecentage of use is with range balls vs real tour level balls
  • I know @edingc just go the pro package, anyone else pick it up and use it yet.
  • I think I have an understanding of Fusion and what it does, but any more thoughts on the pros and cons of it woudl be helpful
  • do you guys use the range featujre more for data, or do you use the simulator for playing much at all
  • I would be using my I phone for the display outside to read my range data, is that going to be enough, or would I need to have tablet

AS mentioned I'll be using it mostly outside on the range and at times on the course (when it's closed and I can go out and pracitce at will)   On the range I'm thinking of also buying a quality net so I can use either ProV's or even the RCT balls.

  • Has anyone used the RCT balsl yet outside vs inside

So just interested in hearinng about mostly outdoor use in any manor from anyone, the pros and cons.  As I don't have an indoor area large enough at this point to use it.  So I want to make sure by only using it outdoors, I'm getitng the full value of it.

Thanks for any thougths on the above.

@edingc: I'll be very interested in your take on the Pro Package. I'm currently holding off on that, mostly because 1) it's expensive and 2) I'm almost certainly going to be pulling the trigger on Awesome Golf in the next week, so that's enough money on golf sim software for now.

@Golfspy_CG2: I don't have many answers to your questions. I only tried using mine outside once, and didn't align it properly, so it hardly picked up a single shot. That's on me. To answer one question: the software is fine on a phone. A tablet is nice, but you can arrange the data boxes to fit neatly on a phone screen.

I can answer some of these:

Do any of you use it primarily or extensively outside?

I used it very often on the range this past summer. It works well. Obviously you need to align it to your target, but you can get away with quite a few shots before needing to realign due to divots, etc. I also used it on the course once last year just for fun. I think I hit five or six drives and thought it read reasonably well.

And if you do, what percentage of use is with range balls vs real tour level balls?

99 percent with range balls, which you can set in the FS Golf App. I believe there is a bit of normalization that occurs when the range ball setting is selected. Obviously spin can be a little funky with range balls.

I think I have an understanding of Fusion and what it does, but any more thoughts on the pros and cons of it would be helpful.

I'm not sure that it will be of much use for full swing, on range shots. Delicate chipping and putting, maybe. There's no way the camera on the Mevo+ is good enough to do much other than differentiate between ball and club head, which still may improve accuracy somewhat. I think this will be more of a help for people who use the simulation features a lot.

Do you guys use the range feature more for data, or do you use the simulator for playing much at all?

I'm almost exclusively using the range on the FS Golf App. I tried the simulator and just found it underwhelming. Of course, I only have a tiny iPhone screen and while I did eventually bring out a TV to hook up to, it's just not the same. I love just hitting balls and working on my swing, and so the range is perfect for that.

I think if I invested in a projector and screen I'd be more likely to want to use the simulator.

I do occasionally venture into the FS Skills challenges, but again, if I want to work on 50 yard pitches I'll usually just do that on the range view.

I would be using my iPhone for the display outside to read my range data, is that going to be enough? Or would I need to have a tablet?

iPhone is more than enough. You can re-arrange the data blocks to show the most important stuff for you. I currently show the shot shape on the range, carry, club speed, ball speed, height, spin, AoA, and vertical launch angle.

I will say that with the additional parameters unlocked by the Pro Pack, I will have a harder time with this as I'll have to scroll to see everything and the shot shape. I want to look at club path, face-to-path and descent angle, specifically.

Regarding the RCT balls, I have not used them outside but generally given enough flight the Mevo+ will pick up correct spin. If you are going to hit into a net outdoors I would recommend the RCTs, but you might also find success with the dots. My issue with the dots is that I would crack golf balls in less than 300 swings. The RCTs, by my estimation, last closer to 1500-2000 hits.

And.... once you got it activated... and gave it a go...???  Come on... living vicariously through you here!!! 😉

I was able to get out last night for about 45 minutes and hit some balls. Unfortunately it was very cold, about 29 degrees, and my swing was not nearly as good as it was on Tuesday when it was much warmer.

The additional parameters are very nice to have and seem to be pretty accurate with what I see on Trackman when I take lessons.

I hit my 54 wedge, 7 iron and 4 utility. Starting with my wedge I noticed my path was more right than I'd want and to compensate I would really bow the wrist on the downswing and slam my face-to-path closed to hit the ball semi-straight.

I made some adjustments, feeling my swing more to the left and also moving my grip more neutral and hit some really straight balls with good distance and spin.

With the two longer clubs I struggled a bit more but realistically I was very cold. As is typical when I'm on Trackman, my face-to-path was bouncing all over the place. It largely comes down to my pivot. If I turn well on the backswing my numbers stabilize in a pretty tight range near zero. When I don't turn enough or sway a little, then my path tends to get left and my face-to-path can be very erratic.

Anyway, obviously the swing is not the point of this post, but I can see how these additional parameters are going to be very useful. It was also nice to see things like dynamic loft and descent angle, which confirmed that although my iron spin is a little lower than I'd like to see, my descent angle ensures that I will have no issue holding greens.

I will say, on the small screen of the iPhone, it would be nicer to be able to shrink the shot tracer a little bit so that you can see more data blocks.
