Speaking of players whose games have gone AWOL, how about Henrik Stenson?  The guy with the most wicked 3 wood in golf has been in a major funk for quite some time now. Unless he get's something going pretty quick, he'll be heading home this afternoon.

The 3 wood was his undoing. At the time he excelled with it he was still upper half, close to upper third driving distance with it.

influx of young bombers, other players working out hard and maximizing the driver distance through careful fitting and launch condition management and he’s been steam rolled.

Like it or not effective driving distance is generally king - it always has been although along the way there are some notable exceptions - they are getting slimmer and slimmer though.

Taylor Made Stealth 10.5  Aldila Ascent Red R flex

Ping G410 5, 7, 9 wood  Alta 65 R flex

Wilson D7 forged 5-GW -  Mamiya recoil 460 R flex

Edison Wedges 54 and 59 KBS Tour Graphite 80's

EVNRoll ER 5

Titleist Pro VIx optic yellow with revkev stamped on them

Still on that elusive hunt for a 3 wood that I'm able to hit - I don't know why, I crush the 5 wood and it's really a 4 wood anyway.

As a person who deals with mentally ill people on a daily basis, I’m loving Matthew Wolff.

Yea, he may have just relied on the 3w for too long but one would think he'd see the data and have put some work into putting a driver back in the bag. Stenson's a big, strong dude and it wouldn't take much (I don't think) for him to be generating very competitive ball speeds.  It would be interesting to know more details on this part of his game. Does he not have a coach that can see this gap or Titleist and/or Callaway not hard at work getting a big stick into his game?

Understood -

I’m observing the obvious in regards to his disappearance- I don’t know why he can’t fix it.

Then again he was fairly anonymous for a long time, exploded for a while and has drifted back. Maybe he just returned to his norm?

I'm really liking the Richard Bland guy!  Lee Westwood and Rosie giving him course experience tips... it's no wonder these guys are tough as nails to beat in team play events.

Bland’s story is inspiring.  A journeyman golfer who finally won on the European Tour earlier this year. Seems like a very genuine guy.  Nothing flashy in his golf game  just steady and makes very good long iron shots.

Hard not to cheer for the underdog…

Riddle me this... why is Torrey Pines rough so challenging?  Bland's great play was finally rocked by B2B missed fairways... he hadn't missed many.  Week after week we watch these guys bomb and gouge, out of stuff that often looks much worse, and run up the score against the track.  What is it about Torrey Pines?

The fairways and rough are kikuyu grass... nice in the fairways, thick and gnarly as rough.  Grabs the ball.  It's best suited for year round very warm, dry climates.

Rough finish for Bland 😐.  I hope he can get some of those 6 strokes back tomorrow and be in the mix.

I can’t stand Sergio, but that’s just not right. Bad luck penalizing a good shot shouldn’t play such a significant role, but I readily admit I don’t know how appropriate rules/relief would look. Happens to pros much more than most of us because they’re so accurate.

Paul’s pet peeve: lost balls for amateurs

Scenario… We play public courses with high rough. We tee off and see our ball is going offline, so we watch intently and try to “mark” it so we can find it. We get to where we thought our ball landed, look for three minutes, can’t find it, then head back to re-tee.

Scenario 2.. We’re on Tour. We hit a drive and it looks like it’s going offline. We watch intently and try to “mark” it so we can find it. We get to where we thought our ball landed and a volunteer/fan/someone points right to it. We identify it and play on.

I don’t want to see posts/tweets from a Pro about how long the rough is and how hard it will be to find a ball this week during the US Open…. There are volunteers and fans along every fairway helping show a player where there ball is, so don’t whine to me. We amateurs don’t have that luxury. We lose a stroke, they don’t. This is what drives me nuts when I play and hit one offline. I get a penalty when a Pro wouldn’t. Ugh. Drives me nuts.
Wahhh, Ian Poulter, cry me a river. I answered him with “Zero. Fans and workers would show me where it is just like they will for you.”

Rant done……. I think.

At our course you have to be standing right over the rough to see the ball. Yeah for the Pros - no sympathy from me.

I cannot believe Rory fans didn't head down to search for his ball; but perhaps that was designated off limits?

I'm indifferent re: Mickelson but it's hard to believe he's done so poorly on his "home course" with two weeks of focus/practice and after what he pulled off at the PGA. That was a very nice capper to his career IF that's his last major or other tournament regular tour win. He does have the second most second place finishes in majors (after Jack), presumably because of Tiger mostly.

Well, let's not forget his (6) close encounters at prior US Open's - a couple of which were his to lose and he did 😐.  For whatever reason, he just seems snakebit at this event.  The odds are definitely not in his favor as the years roll along and I would put the recent major win in the beat all odds category.  But, he clearly can still hang with the field and, who knows, like Tom Watson at Turnberry in 2009, might find that magic again.

I've long been a Phil fan and would love to see him complete the grand slam.
