stat tracking question

Recommended Posts

i know that how you keep track of stats is mostly dependent on how you see those stats as valuable, but just wanted some input here.

short par 4, you go for the green and overshoot it a little bit. the ball ends up in the rough behind the green.

would you count this as a fairway hit?

i’m fully aware that no, the tee shot didn’t land in the fairway, but as i see it the shot was perfectly executed and should get rewarded as a fairway hit.

this happened to me yesterday on a 290yd par 4. i went with 3w and found my ball sitting on the slope behind the green. marked it down as a missed fairway, but today that’s bothering me haha

For  me personally the answer is no.   Does a perfectly executed shot from the fairway that rolls off the green count as a green hit?     Does the tee shot that rolls through the fairway and ends up 1" into the rough count as a fairway hit?    Also I think you need to look at more than fairway hit or not hit.   When you miss the fairway,  can you advance the ball toward the green?   You really need to also evaluate how bad the tee shot was.

When I work as a walking scorer for the LPGA we are told to simply look at where they are hitting from and not how they got there.   In your instance you are hitting from the rough

this is why i usually go with “playable drives” as opposed to “fairways hit” when i’m keeping stats on a round.

if i’m a few feet in the left rough with a great angle to a right pin, i count that as a good drive even though it’s a missed fairway

i knew the answer was no...more so interested in how everyone else compiles data on their rounds.

I do what I indicated.  Fairway hit or not and for missed fairways,  I can add a "bad" tag meaning I had was unable to realistically advance the ball toward the green.

I agree with cnosil, You are hitting the shot from the rough. To me and just my opinion the fairway ends before the green and then its approach from there. anything over or to the side is a miss. Same goes for a green hit or miss, if its on the fringe thats a miss. It also doesn't count as a putt IMO. That's just how I keep track have no need to inflate stats.

The course I played/worked at had a few holes that were similar situations. Either the fairway stopped short of the green and there was "rough" in front or there were holes where depending on the pin it was actually a benefit to be left or right and the value of getting a ball in those spots was much greater then being middle fairway. That being said I would still mark any of those down as missed fairways even if the position was more beneficial. I would put a little * beside it to note I hit it where I wanted.

i’m not trying to inflate at all, i hope that’s not how it came across. it’s not like i get a cookie for an extra fairway hit haha

This is a Bomber type question and I have no experience with such distance issues and am not qualified to answer!!  😁

However I have noticed in The Grint score tracking software there is a selection under fairways hit stats for "missed long".  I have not had the need to that particular scoring code.

The obvious follow up question for @Chip Strokes is did he get a GIR for that hole!!!???   😆

No I didn't think that at all. I was just making a statement as I have seen others fudge the numbers.  I don't any cookies for hitting a fairway, I'm fat enough as it is.
