Pinehurst

Recommended Posts

Getting excited. In 82 days we leave for our 'golf buddies' trip to Pinehurst, NC. This year we are playing Talamore Golf Club, Longleaf Golf & Country Club, Hyland Golf Club, and Tobacco Road. I am sure we will play Pinehurst 3 or 4 as well.

Have a great time.  If you haven't already and if there's room on the itinerary, play mid-pines and/or pine needles. We were just there and it was our favorite track between pinehurst 2 4 8, and tobacco rd included.

Longleaf is vastly improved since US Kids took it over.  Unfortunately, they did away with their old bar during the renovation (it was a classic).  Played there earlier this year and it was in great shape.

if you haven’t played Tobacco Road curious what you think about it.  Target golf at its best.

We are playing Talamore, Mid-South, Pine Needles and Mid Pines in August.

I played in a Clubcorp event a handful of years ago at Pinehurst. It was prior to the #4 renovation, but 4 was supposed to be in the rotation and was taken off, as it took some damage earlier in the that summer. We played #2, #6, #8 for the tournament and snuck in additional rounds on #2, #5, and #9. 36 a day in the Carolina heat was a workout, but so fun. I would do it again in a second. I didn't jump into the TT event due to timing, but have a great time. Breakfast in the Carolina lodge is a delicious experience. Service was top notch as well. Enjoy!

I live 30 miles north of there.  While you are in the area, I echo the Mid Pines recommendation.  One of my favorite tracks.  Also need to consider Pinehurst #9.  It used to be called "Pinehurst National" and then "The National" before the resort bought it.  It's the only Nicklaus layout in Pinehurst area and it's a great track.  I would play 9 over 3, but not over 4...but its close.

Talamore is awesome, especially since the rebuild (no more llama drama though).  Tobacco Road is visually impressive.  YOU HAVE TO FOLLOW THE YARDAGE BOOK.  DO NOT TRUST YOUR EYES!

While you are down this way, get some real NC BBQ (the vinegar style, not that ketchup or mustard stuff) and the best cure for a hangover in the area:  Bojangles Cajun Filet Biscuit Combo with Sweet Tea (if you need that kind of thing).

Welcome to NC, sir!  Enjoy your stay in the land of the longleaf pine.

I like Beefeaters in Southern Pines, never tried the (much) newer Southern Prime, along with Chef Warren's and Chapman's.  Ironwood, a mile or so east of the traffic circle, Pinehurst Brewing, Maxie's for a sports bar, lots of good dining options.

Talamore has two new llamas, a mother and child, in the llama pen between 13 and 14.  There's talk that they might get trained to bring back the llama-caddie option.

Yeah, mid-pines is great for sure.  We played there last year on our trip.

I love Tobacco Road as well but curious about the "target golf" description? It had some of the widest fairways I have played in a long time. The main target aspect is the par 3s as Strantz loves those shallow par 3s with bunkers short and long. But I found most of the fairways on the par 4s and 5s to be very expansive and forgiving. I won't say it is "easy" but I found it much more scoreable than Pinehurst #8 and #9 (I was about 10 shots better on TR than Pinehurst #8) even on the first time playing through.

Or, if you don't want to buy the yardage book you can take notes using Google Earth. It is very accurate and helped us immensely. Especially on holes like #9 and #16 where you can't see exactly where you are trying to land. Playing it for the first time is one of those true surprises in golf that I am jealous of because you only get it once at each course.

Hope you and your buddies have a great time. I can appreciate your excitement as my wife and I are headed to Pinehurst for the first time the week of Labor Day for 3 nights at the resort and playing 4 rounds (Courses 1, 3, 8, and 9), can't see paying the premium to play #2. Just hoping my old bones hold up playing 4 days in a row.

Yep, I was the 2nd one signed up, and I don't know how the person beat me as I literally singed up within a minute of the post going live.  HA   Have been to several of these and hoping that I'll be able to make it.   The Delta thing is getting me worried, as my Dr. said I still need to be cautious as i still have a compromised immune system.

At the risk of sounding stupid, but my curiosity is peaked. What is a TT loyalist? What sold out in minutes? My guess was Team Titleist, but even if that’s right, what was the sign up? How often do they happen? I would love to be a part of a golf group like what you are describing.

TT is in Fact Team Titleist

TT loyalist isn’t rally an official designation. It generally refers to those that are active on the Team Titleist Discussion Boad, which can be found on the main Titleist site.

Titleist hosts an annual Team Titleist Invitational every year in the fall.  It’s held at a 1st class resort.  Pinehurst this year and few years ago.  Bandon Dunes, Whistling Straits, Kiawah and TPC Sawgrass as well.

The site and dates are usually posted in February or March with all the details.  Costs, What's included etc.

They are usually 2.5 day events.  This year is 3 days.  3 rounds at Pinehurst.  No’s 2,4 and 8 as well as a round on the Cradle and putting contest on Thistle Dunes.

Costs can range from $1300 to $2100 per person and include all golf, accommodations at the resort, breakfast each day, a dinner one night and awards lunch the final day.    Also usually an incredible welcome package of ProV’s, FJ apparel, and vey nice an exclusive Team Titleist items that can’t usually be bought.  Mugs, steel bag tags, T-shirt’s, money clips, ball markers.  Lots more.

Several members of Titleist staff attend.  The Digital Team snd members of the ball and club Fitting teams and R&D are usually there.  Special guests have included Bob Vokey and Cameron McComrick.

its usually limited to 80 or so attendees to allow for a more personal experience.

Once signups go live they literally fill up within a couple hours.  So you need to be watching for it. If you are a registered TT member you will get an email giving a couple days notice that signup is coming

There are other regional US events throughout the year put on by actual Team Titleist members.  And they may get some SWAG sent to give out. And sometime Allan or someone else from the Team Titleist site may show up if they can.   But the official Team Titleist Invitationals are  truly special events.

You will make new golf friends that last years.

There was going to be an International Team Titleist event somewhere in the Dominican in 2020 but it was cancelled due to Covid.

Oh wow! Thank you so much for all this information! I am fairly new to the golf world. Outside of a few rounds a year with my father as a child and early adulthood, I wasn’t really involved. Seeing the 2020 US Open and Masters really made me fall in love with the game. I sold our house in Detroit and moved to Myrtle Beach where I could play golf year round, and learn to play well. It’s eight months in, and it has been amazing. I found this forum in that time, and it’s been a linchpin to my success on the course. But I am really looking to branch out and get involved in the golf community, and something like this is pretty cool! Maybe I’ll run into at one of these events down the road.

Thank you so much for the detailed information. You have been great!

You're quite welcome.   If you ever do make a TeamTitleist event or official or local, you will find it a fantastic time.

You found the best online golf community out there as far as a friendly and helpful group here.  Feel free to jump in any topic with questions about anything, I promise you, you will get helpful info.

We have a couple great members in the Myrtle Beach area.  They are two great guys who you might be able to hook up with and hit the range or course with. @BIG STU is one of the very first original members here and the mayor of sorts of Myrtle Beach.  @Grand Stranded is another very popular member who can help you with the MB golf scene as well.

Good luck and Most of all Have fun.

LOL I bet Team Titleist would love me now--- I did go back to my older mini staff bag they gave me years ago. That bag is so user friendly to me I started back using it LOL stuffed with Macgregor and Taylor made clubs but I do have a Scotty Santa Fe. Come to think of it we were a Titleist dealer at the old golf shop and I had a bag, ball and glove deal with them. Come to think of it back in those days I was playing Macs too BUT I did have 2 Vokey wedges in the bag and I did play Pro Vs. Now days because my course is Srixon I am playing Q Stars and using a Srixon glove but mostly I have won that stuff in tournaments held there.

Yeah this community has been absolutely amazing. I am so glad I stumbled on this site. I was a non member observer for the first part of this year, and decided to get in the mix recently. I appreciate the recommendations! I literally have no friends or family in the area, and I work from home, so I have no real opportunity to meet people down here. I am in Conway/Loris. Down the street from Shaftesbury Glenn, for any locals that know the area. I played The Pearl in Calabash on Saturday and played the best round of my life. Lots of firsts that round. First time I played the entire round with one ball, first birdie, first multiple birdie round, and I broke 80! I am afraid it is lightning in a bottle though!

Go Blue! Hail to the victors!

Big Stu!! I think I have seen you on here before. I am sure I have seen you at a pancake house. We got down here and I go “what’s a pancake house?” 30 pounds later and I know what they are now! Our favorite spot is Theo’s Pancake House right by Arcadian Shores. Fantastic. Garden City is a bit of a trek from Loris. I say Loris because it’s hardly Conway this far north. But maybe we can figure something out along the way.

@gir3putt

You didn’t mention whether or not you live in a golf community or not, but I’m guessing no?

Here are a couple of ways to meet fellow golfers… The Sons of Italy has a couple of leagues, and the Senior Center is a great place to go to get discounts on tee times and meet people if you’re old enough?

I used to play every week with a big travel league called the Flounders. They play every Thursday and you get to play the best courses at a great rate, because they book an entire course for the day. For example, Caledonia in season for $55 and Barefoot for $47. They also have smaller offshoot groups that play on other days of the week.

My guess is you’ll do what all the rest of us transplants did, take your time, settle in. You’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet people and join as many leagues/groups as you like.

if you have any questions, dm me, like @Golfspy_CG2 said, I’ll be glad to help, and I’m sure @BIG STUwill do the same. (When he’s not eating pancakes that is). 😜

Hey man you got it

Sounds like you’re feeling better, which is great to hear.

Just remember to stay off ladders, big guy.

I’m just getting back to playing myself, after a self imposed break. I’m easing my way back in after rushing back from back issues of my own. The swing sort of left me, and I went down the lessons rabbit hole, which hurt more than it helped.

This summer has been so damned hot, I’m having a hard time working up any enthusiasm about playing.

I do not live in a golf community. My wife and I lived in the city for the first dozen years together, with neighbors surrounding us, and we had enough and wanted space and we wanted horses. So we got a nice lot down here and a couple horses. I am 33 so I am a little shy of senior leagues at the moment. I appreciate the useful information though for sure, and I am sure I’ll have questions.

Before we got down here, I found the Myrtle Beach Golf Trail online, and it seemed like a smart play. I have definitely made my money back on savings on the greens fees, but I feel like I am missing out some real gems not on the trail. In due time though. I am definitely overwhelmed with the options. A good problem to have. We are very blessed and lucky. It was a scary move to make with young kids, no family or friends around for support, and my wife starting a new job, but we haven’t been happier. Thanks again for the willingness to help out. Everyone on this site is so great!

Go Blue! Hail to the victors!

Oh trust me I know on the hot and then we had the drought and then kinda the floods. I know the heat kills me and it is mostly due to my BP meds. My Doc who is a golf bud cautioned me again on hot weather and BP meds. We are scheduled to play the 9 and dine tomorrow. We actually won it 2 weeks ago shot -1 mostly off my ball. Far as my back I have both good and bad days. I have been low key practicing early mornings out at the course about 6:30 or so. When it gets hot home I go home. I do practice at home some with my Skilz Ball trainer and plodding around the yard with a 60* and whiffle balls. My main thing is because of nerve damage my core will not react properly and with my upper body strength I can pull across and hit a pull hook. I have learned to compensate for it by aiming right. I had not played anywhere other than Indigo in 15 months. I ventured out 2 weeks ago and played Man O War. Course was pristine greens and fairways. LOL had to learn to putt on bent greens again. And they had some develish pin placements. Got away with the left syndrome because that course is wide open. Had to adjust to the greens quite a bit. Shot 44 on the front and 37 on the back from the gold tees. Actually if I had putted better the back would have been a lot better missed 3 what I consider to my standards makeable birdie putts. Missed one 4 foot par putt. Did almost eagle #18 about slam dunked a wedge from the fairway. But I was happy with the 81 considering everything I have been through. But I consider me on the way back. I have had to adjust my game and equipment some because I am not as long as I was pre accident unless I push it but if I push it the back will hurt and stiffen up. And trust me brother I will not get back on a ladder of any type again. Was laughing the other day at one of those clogged gutter commercials showing house damage from stopped up gutters. Told the wife the foundation could crack and falll apart and the sofitt will rot off before I would get on a ladder. In reality no problem since we live in a mobile home but yeah no ladders for me. My bud in Charlotte who owns the family paint contracting business is 3 years younger than me has not gotten on a ladder since i got hurt. His daughter has been on his butt for years. She told me she was sorry I got messed up but that made her Dad not get on a ladder since

We love it here. Far from anything like Detroit. I’ll always love Michigan and the D, but there is nothing like the MB area back there.
