Depends on the course, but when we did the CC 4 club challenge I took 2 iron, 6 iron, 9 iron, 54* and putter. That would be my suggestion, but I could see using a hybrid instead of a 2 iron.
Here was my thought process. What clubs do I need for par 3's so I don't have really awkward numbers. For me that basically decided the irons and wedge then I found a tee club that would give me decent gaps with those clubs. It worked out for 8 holes and I was level par till blowing the 2 iron  into a hazard...

Seeing a few 3 woods.

My reason for not including it is… your swing speed.  Haha.

id like to see how you do without any of your rocket launchers.  Just a very large caliber rifle instead.

I did this a few years ago.  Same set up.  It was fun, and I played well.  I moved up a set of tees though…

This is fun!  When I worked at the course many moons ago we would do this often in the evening for a few holes (& a few $$  😄 )  varying the clubs we had to use but it was always 3 clubs + putter.... today I'd take .... 4i, 8i, 52* & putter.  You would learn to get creative, shape shots, hit intentional low hooking rollers, 3/4 cuts to hold a green on short yardages, etc.  But that was with blades and balatas and shot shaping was easier.

i really like my 52 lately, which is exactly why i'm not gonna use it.  i want to see how useful my 56 can be for me.  potentially i can add a shot to the arsenal.  plus, it's my sand club, so it'll be good to know i'm covered if i end up on the beach

fair point.  i'm also leaning away from the 3w.  i hit it really well, and the whole point of this is to get some exposure to shots i might not otherwise try.

lots of really good suggestions! thanks everyone.  i think i'm gonna go with....

2i, 6i, 8i, PW, 56*, putter.

here's how i got to that lineup:

the course i'm playing, and that i play the most, is extremely tight and tree lined.  in a usual round, i only hit driver 2 or 3 times.  the upside just doesn't outweigh the risks.  almost every hole is super densely tree-lined.  so, driver was out right off the bat.

so the 2i gets the nod over the 3w because i'm really comfortable with the 3w off the tee.  i think the point of a round like this is to force yourself to be uncomfortable and pull clubs you normally wouldnt.  after all, thats how you become comfortable with all the clubs in your bag.

6i and 8i give me decent coverage over most approach shots and should handle the par 3s well.  8i can be a bump and run club as well

PW because i normally play this as a full swing club, but i figure i'll be left with some funky yardages and would like to force myself to play some partial shots.

56 because i normally do all my chipping with my gap wedge, so let's see how i fare with some more loft.  plus it's my go-to sand club

here's a rundown of the front 9:

1. par 4 423  - dogleg right with a generous landing area around 250-275 and ample room to bail out right.  one of the only holes that isn't surrounded by trees. gameplan here is 2i out into the fairway, which should leave me a knockdown 8i in.

2. par 4 405 - blind tee shot and the fairway bends around to the right.  2i down the right side should leave me a full PW in

3. par 5 526 - fairway is pretty straight.  there's water left and trees right.  i won't be able to get home in 2, as i really dont like hitting the 2i off the deck.  2i, 6i, then i'll be chipping on

4. par 3 174 - very straightforward hole since it's surrounded by trees and safe from any wind there might be.  long and left is trouble since it slopes down severely from the green.  smooth 8i here.

5. par 4 347 - fairway curves right here.  i normally play 3w out towards a big tree on the left side of the fairway which leaves me an easy chip on to the green.  i'll play the same line with the 2i and hopefully have a wedge in.

6. par 5 562 - i hate this hole.  big dogleg right, elevated tee box and the landing area runs out at 270ish which plays more like 240 since you're up high.  if you land in the fairway off the tee, the approach shot is blind since the fairway goes back uphill.  2i towards the right side of the landing area, 6i up over the hill, then probably a long chip or 3/4 56 to get on.

7. par 3 225 - plays more like 205-210 from a very elevated tee box.  6i gets me there.

8. par 4 315 - driveable par 4 open on the right and trouble on the left.  2i out towards the bunker on the right side of the fairway (cant reach it) should leave an easy wedge in to the green

9. par 3 200 - i've never played this hole where i've shot the flag at anything further than 180, so i don't know how they got 200 as the yardage.  even still, it plays about a club long since it's wide open behind the green which creates a little wind tunnel.  usually pull 7i but choked down 6 will be fine.  long is ok here.

google earth view of the course. the top right is 3-7. you can see how tight things are. the bottom left is 11-15 where it’s really narrow again.

I recently played in a 5-club challenge, but the putter counted as 1 club, so there were people who chose to putt with a wedge...but that wasn't me.  I went with 3W, 5-iron, 9-iron, 54*, and putter.  I think it all depends on the course layout and yardage...the course I played I could reach the green in 2 on par-5's with a 3W off the tee and 5-iron for my second shot...but that wouldn't happen at most courses, for me anyway.

@Shankster experiment was a success. shot my all time best 9 with a 40.

got to the course and they threw me a curveball: we’re starting on the back today. so nothing i wrote above came in to play at all.

started off pushing the 2i right but eventually found my groove

hit a bunch of good 6 irons and stuffed an 8i to 6 feet on a 188yd par 3. tee box is really elevated, so it plays more like 175. one of my favorite holes on the course.

best part of today was playing a bunch of short chips with my PW and 8i. i always go for a wedge in those situations, so it was cool playing some different shots.

Yeah,  I caught it a smidge heavy.  I’m telling you, it’s the irons man.  No way I was hitting a ball that far without them.  6 iron maybe.

I know those T100s irons are pretty strong so that was basically a 7 iron
