Buying a Driver with no Serial Number?

Recommended Posts

What kind of hesitations should I have if considering buying a Driver head with no Serial Number... Seller is listing it as a "prototype" and that's why there is no SA#.

Its actual tour issue model ( one I just happened to be fitted for the other day) but this one doesn't have a serial number - does this mean it wasn't approved for tour use or should I be nervous about knock-off?!

Also - would it be legal to use in tournaments?!

Just happens to be the exact club head I was fitted for and selling for a price I could live with so I would want to take advantage of it's legit! Any thoughts?!

Does he have any type of provenance for the club? Receipt? Package insert from Callaway saying it's a proto? Letter from Pro/Fitter that he got it from, etc.? if you have pics you could send them to @vgolfman on Twitter and he can probably validate authenticity.

In most cases if it is too good to be true, walk away.  I would call customer service for that manufacturer and see if their prototypes do not have serial numbers.  Check it out......

I'm with the crew that says "walk away"....the provenance is important. So how did this person come by this club? Would imagine Callaway has some kind of markings to track their prototypes....if it is a prototype...is it conforming? two weeks ago bought a Mavick from Callaway Pre-owned...like new condition...never been hit, comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and was $250.00 (on sale)....

I would walk away, but if you really want to know, reach out to the OEM and ask them

Yup thanks for the advice everyone, reached out to the seller with some specific questions and how they acquired it and they responded with "offer is over" and removed the listing - all for the best!
