What’s the longest driver set up you have ever hit?
I’ve tried many drivers over my golf career, such as; TM M1 440, SLDR, Cobra Speedzone, Ping g410l lst, Cobra Fly Z, TM M4, Rogue Sub Zero, and Epic Sub Zero.

So far, nothing has beat my epic sz with rogue max 75x shaft. There is something about this configuration that works for me. Bombs away!!!!

WITB

callaway apex/pro combo (5-A) Elevate tour stiff

epic sub zero driver

jetspeed 3/5 woods

apex hybrid 19*

Well, it all goes with age…

At 21 I hit a green from 355 yards with a small, steel Golfsmith driver head that had a Dynamic Gold steel shaft.

In my 30s I drove two greens at 360 with a Nakashima NP1 9* head with a Proforce Blue shaft.

In my 40s I hit a ball on a par 5 “long drive” hole during a scramble that went 355. Ping G30 head, Xphlexxx Agera shaft. I also hit a drive on a par 5 in the City tournament that went 362 with a Nakashima NTec 2.85 head and a House of Forged Express shaft. That club played at 47”, only long shaft I’ve ever had.

Since I’ve turned 50, now 52, I hit a drive 361 yards on the 18th hole at our public course with my Honma TR20 8* driver which had the Ventus Black 7X shaft.

All I can say is I wish I had today’s technology when I was 20!!!!!

Taylormade R1.  It just went.  Can’t remember the exact distance.  But it was in the 360’s on my longest.  Regularly hit it over 300… then it fell off the cart with the rest of my clubs and the head cracked and the shaft broke.  Then… I messed up my shoulder, the big drives were gone, until just this year.

But… the Epic Speed on the monitor at DSG I was absolutely crushing.  Probably should buy one.

Those Nakashima heads had some heat to them.

Yeah, no doubt! I played the NP1, the Htec, and the newest model, the NTec 2.85, and I still think the NP1 was the longest. I talked to John Nakashima recently, asking when he’s putting out a new head, and he said he hasn’t been able to beat the 2.85…. That head is good, but not great on off-center hits. Dead center? Ridiculous.

I've actually got my longest combo and one of the most accurate at the moment with my Mavrik Sub Zero and Ventus Blue 6X shaft.  Close second would be the Taylormade M2 that I had paired with the Tour AD DI shaft, but I would put more balls in other fairways than I would my own so it was just not accurate for me.

Some of the change can be accounted for fitting and learning my swing a bit more and what produces certain numbers.

Furthest would probably be in the 360 range from years ago, but that would have been with a bit of downslope help.  I hit a couple in the 340 range on flat holes the other day.  The low spin shafts/heads these days really can get it out there.

Before the 460cc heads, my dad & I built some clubs. We had this green driver head from Golf works, I think it was Out-O-Site or something. Aluminium head with titanium face. We put a 100g titanium shaft in it. No matter how hard you swung the ball launched a mile. Loved that club.

If you have the shafts you like or would fit, I've started to see prices come down on the slightly used clubs.  Quickshipgolf and Globalgolf (ie trusted sellers with 30 day return policies) are starting to sell on eBay and see them going for 315 - 350 routinely.

I used to work at a range doing light club building and we would build long drive clubs with heads we bought from golf world.  That was the early days of graphite and I think it was a fully bright yellow Aldila (don’t remember the model now) shaft that was around 50 inches that we would put in on request.  Those clubs would launch.  The knock off clubs from the 90’s/2000’s were just better than they are today and were viable options.

I remember those. This was at the same time before they figured out graphite shafts. Everything was super whippy, X flex wasn't popular, and drivers had 6* or 7* loft to try and mitigate spin. I remember caddying and watching watching all these younger guys just spray everything. That's why we went with titanium shaft. They're just too heavy anymore. I've got a 70g X in my current driver.

I'd have to say my current setup, I know I have lost some speed but I am still hitting it places I didn't use to.

Honorable mention was an I15 with Whiteboard, that was a low spin cannon.

If we are talking a 1 off swing then it was 12 years ago at a charity long drive contest. It was very dry and I hit a low screaming bullet with a TM R11S with stock Aldila Rip Alpha shaft. Had to have ran for 150 yards as it ended up inside 100 on a 470 yard par 4.

In my 20's I would carry my 7.5* GBB with a Grafalloy ProLite the same distance I hit my SIM2.  Like you, I cannot even fathom what distance would have been with today's technology.

On another note, anyone who ever played the GBB with a ProLite, could you also attest that that shaft and head combo were built for each other.  Massive bombs.

So far, mine is my current gamer. Cobra F9 w/ Aldila NC 2KXV Blue 70x at 44.5". Longest drive I have GPSed was 318. I am thinking about getting a new one as my swing has changed a little and I am launching it a tad high with a few hundred too much spin.

Twentysome years ago a guy at work was a basement club builder on the side. He built me a driver that consisted of a Callaway Warbird head on a 50" long steel shaft.

(yes it was legal back then)

It took me a small bucket of balls to learn how to hit that thing. After about 3 buckets and 4 rounds of golf, I started averaging 290 from the tee and hit about 70 % of the fairways.

I would say my current driver (M5 9* set to 8.25* with Ventus Blue 6 velocore) is the longest in terms of output vs input.  I'm swinging 108-112ish on the course and regularly finding my ball 285-300 or so in dry conditions, 270-280 if wet.  Back in 2011, I was using a Titleist 909 D2 with a Mitsubishi D+ 60 Blue (I think that's right), and was swinging faster and freer, regularly playing with 118-122 type speed, regularly carrying into the 295-305 territory and totaling around 310-320.  i've always struggled with too much backspin with my driver, and I've never quite enjoyed the distance I think I'd have if I could figure that out.  The M5 with the weights both fully forward combined with the low spinning ventus has helped.  I took some lessons a few months back and quickly finding my speed again.  I fully expect to get back into the "playable" speed range of 115-119ish soon!  I've got a sim2 max 9* head coming from ebay that I'll pair with my velocore shaft, and try setting at 7.5* -- perhaps soon this will be my longest in terms of input/output AND actual distance!

Here's to hoping!

Rapidly Dropping Handicap (Was a 2.8 in 2011, got addicted to the power I had (122 mph Driver) and blew my game up with crazy slices.  Fought it for a while and decided to put the clubs "in the closet" for a while.  Ended up playing only 2-3 times per year until 2017.  Started playing 2-3 times per month until March of this year--decided to make a decision: Take a set of lessons and make a choice; Either see moderate improvement, or sell my clubs and just quit the game altogether.  Thankfully, a good coach was able to see some of the CRAP that had gotten into my swing and gotten me quickly back on track.  Hadn't broken 90 in about 4 years, shot a 77 a few weeks back, and haven't shot over 84 since April!

Back in the day of Titleist Professional 90 & 100's, PING TiSi 5.5° XFlex (can't remember the shaft brand) was for me the best of the bunch.  But that's also when swing speed was 119, remember ordering it at a demo day from a rep in Cleveland, Ohio and cringing at the cost... $200.  Those were the days.

This is totally age driven. I hit a wooden driver well longer than anything I’ve gamed the past 15 years.

I played baseball in college, had strong forearms and was very long relatively speaking.  That has changed with age.

TM SLDR with a Matrix Ozik white, playing at 45.5”. There were rounds where I couldn’t hit a fairway and some rounds where I struggled to just stay on the hole I was supposed to play, but on that rare occasion when the planets and stars aligned…it was a low spinning, high launching missile.

Late to this party....

My first thought was along the lines of your post.  I was quite a bit longer in my younger days than I am now at nearly 58.

My longest drives in my peak years were with SMT 455DB, Nemesis, or Encore clubheads.  Not sure I'd call any of them the longest, I found the Encore was a little spinny for me in spite of it producing my personal best non-cart-path-aided drive.  I used to be pretty long with a Golfsmith XPC Tour Steel.  And the ultimate piece of resistance (sic), my longest non-cart path aided drive of the last six seasons was with a Ping Zing Blonde laminate, green dot, KT-M shaft.

Kind of hard to say.  🙂

I'm getting some interesting results right now out of my Original One.  It might be longer for me than anything else I've got lying around...

Two drivers come to mind:

1.  Titleist 905R with the blue/gold stiff shaft in it.  I could fly distances with it that were amazing.

2.  Adams 9064 proto head on an Aldila green Xstiff.  That deep face was so easy to hit.  Still have that combo and going to give it to a son soon.

Biggest secret, for me, with the LONG Ball.......was I was in my 30's.!!!!!!!!
