Anyone-go-50-53-58-for-their-wedges?

My Callaway Apex Pro Approach Wedge is 50 degrees.

My Titleist Vokey Spin Milled (starting to get old) raw is 53 degrees

And my Swiss Army Knife: Callaway MD5 Jaws X Grind is 58 degrees. Anything I ask this wedge to do, it does.

Although this is a 3 wedge set-up, with the jacked up lofts on my Apex 19 Combo irons, I can carry a 3 Iron and a 7 Wood, which hit the ball about the same distance but with very different trajectories. I hit it a mile high with the 7 Wood (20 degrees) and I hit the stinger with the 3 iron (18 degrees). My old set which was 48, 52, 56 and 60 didn’t give me this option. The Callaway X Grind allows me to really open the face and hit great flops, so I no longer need the 60 or a 62 degree wedge. I wanted to share my less than typical set-up and see if anyone does something similar.

Driver: Callaway Paradym; Hzrdus Silver 50 Gram

3 Wood: Ping 410; "Otto Phlex" Project X Evenflow Riptide

7 Wood: Callaway Epic Max

8-AW Irons: Callaway Apex Pro 19

Wedges: Callaway MD4 54, Callaway MD4 58 X Grind

you don't have a PW?   If you do you technically have a 4 wedge setup.    the bounce and loft for clubs is strictly what works and provides the desired gapping for an individual.  For example Edison wedges don't use typical lofts as they are supposed to carry farther.   Ultimately if it works it works.

50/54/58 is a popular setup, so you arent far off. Im thinking of going to a 48/52/58 setup to either play 13 clubs or give me another option at the top as well if I can ever find a driving iron that I like.

Just because it has P stamped on it doesn’t make it a pitching wedge- it’s a 9 Iron. The jacked up lofts these days. 🙄

Yes- based on what’s stamped on the bottom, you are right.

And I’m thinking of bending my A Wedge to 49 or 48 to get a little more of a gap between it and the 53.

I have a wedge setup spaced by 4 degrees.  Actually all my irons are spaced by 4 degrees.  My wedge set up is PW, GW, SW, LW at 46°, 50°, 54° and 58°.  The 4° gapping allows me to carry the 4th wedge.

I have PW 45, GW 50 then 54 and 58 .. I like 4-5 between each wedge .. I used to play 56 - 60 but decided the 58 was more beneficial then the 60 and so far it has worked.

Unless I need to change the bounce I typically don’t play non stated loft in my sw or lw. I’ll adjust my vw if needed to fit a gap

My set GW is a 48°, and then I carry a 52° and a 58°. Same as you, a low-bounce 58° lets me open the face so it's plenty of loft (the full-face grooves help). I rarely use it though, since in most instances a partial shot with a 52° offers me a larger margin for error.

My wedges are 45° - 50° - 56° - 60°, but it's an individual choice so I wouldn't presume to tell someone else what they should play. I only use a full swing with the 45° & 50°, almost never with the 56° (sand) or 60° (short sided over a trap/hazard). YMMV

48, 52, 58 is my preferred setup and I love it. Like the OP, I like the versatility and swiss-army knife nature of a 58. And I'm pretty comfortable with partial shots with my 48, so I tend to use that more than my 52. So by sticking with those three (two and a half?), I tend to focus more on getting good with the clubs I have rather than worrying about which of four wedges is best for which shot. Don't know if that's the best approach, but it works well enough for me.

I did back in the day when I was playing with my Cleveland TA3's. Because my PW was 46* so it was Cleveland Tour Action REG.588 51* bent 50*, 53* Diadic, and 58*. Sometimes I would switch out the 58* for the 60* BeCu. Probably my favorite set up of all time. Occasionally I will game them for nostalgias sake.

I'm near the same setup (49, 54, 58), but to be honest, I go more on what carry distances I hit the clubs.

  • I want my 49 (or 48 or 50) to be 100-110y, basically a smooth or knockdown can be 100y carry
  • My 54-ish club is played for 85-95y shots
  • My 58 is my go to for around greens, bunkers, but goes 70-80 if I go full swing (really rare).

As an example on my Gap wedge (49* '19 apex pro combo set), it's that 100-110 yardage. In nearly an identical looking Cally Jaws wedge, it's 48* and covers the same yardage. My previous set, this was covered by a 50* wedge.

I have 5 degree gaps from Lob down to 8 iron,      58, 53, 48, 43, 38.

This effectively made my PW (factory loft of 46) redundant, so i have tossed it.   Most brands make the GW and PW the same headweight and length, whilst not making a bigger loft gap,  which should be criminal.            I now have room for extra club at the top of the bag.

48-53-58 for me.

I eschewed the 46° T100 PW that matches my set for the near identical T100S GW instead.
