170-200 out the rough. What club you going to?

Recommended Posts

Not been back to golf long so yes spend a lot of time off the fairway. I have always played well with long irons so have an 18° driving iron and 4 iron. Have had a 19° hybrid but not consistent enough with it. Does anyone play a 7 wood stiff shaft?

All rough isn’t created equal, so I don’t know how to answer, and 30 yards is a wide range. I’d use a 5i for 170 or a 3h for 200 if the lie permitted. Couldn’t use either in most of the rough where I play, I’d have to ‘take my medicine’ and use more loft (for hitting into the rough). My only “woods” are D and 3W and I don’t have any interest in other “woods” (yet).

That’s a pretty big gap. From 170/180 it would be a 6i, 180/190 a 5i and 190/200 my 4 utility.

Depends on the length and thickness of rough, how deep I’m in it, what is in line with my desired target line, what trouble I may have to deal with, is going for the green the right play or not, if I miss where do I want to miss.

It could be a wedge to a fairway wood

8 or 7 iron.  Hammer it.

this.

unless the ball is completely swallowed up in the long grass, i just focus on ball first contact and hitting the ball hard.

Depends, but low flyer? 7 iron run her up there. If I’m able to fly 5 iron depending on actual distance.
then a wedge on because I’m missing the green anyway!

That's a big distance gap. For me, it's anywhere between 7i to 4i depending on lie, wind, conditions, etc.

if the rough is thick enough, I'd punch something out of there with like a 6 or 7 iron, take my medicine and then hit wedge or loft wedge depending on what distance is left.  better to do that then try to get to the green and hit a bad shot and end up in more trouble.  figure punching it out have a chance to make par and probably no worse than bogey.  I'd rather take the big oops out of the possible scores.

Tough to tell without seeing the lie.  If I get a flier lie might be a 7 iron.  If it isn't a good lie I punch it out with something like a 5 iron and get it as close as I can while taking my medicine.  If it is really horrific maybe just a wedge and suck it up.

I played a Callaway Epic Flash 7wd with a PX HZRDUS Black 85g, 6.5 (x flex) Tour Issue only shaft for a while.  Loved it.  It's up for sale, but sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't just keep it.  I could sell my 3wd and 5wd and get a new 4wd to replace them both.

As for the original question, from 200y out in the rough, I'd probably take 5wd.  From 170y out, I might take 7wd.  There are really too many variables.  If the rough is short, but enough to create a flyer, then I'd likely take less club, but if it's thick enough to impede movement of the club through it, then I might just hack it out with a wedge.

Also, depends on where the pin is on the green.  If it's 170y away, but in the front, then I'd take a club that would likely go long.  If it's in the back, then I'd be happy with a little short.

I do play a 7 wood in stiff. It's my go to 190ish club.

As others have stated, depending on the thickness of rough and lie, I would hit 5 iron, 3 hybrid, 5 wood. Guess I should also add that it also depends on the tree situation. Here, most rough is accompanied by trees in which case, usually a 5 punch under ranches to whatever distance I can.
