A constant 14 can work if you're on one track. I only coordinate ten clubs as the loft progression of a set, anyway. Four clubs--the driver, driving iron, greenside finesse wedge, and putter-- are shot-specific, add-on utility clubs. They could be dropped into any set other than the one that they're in. They don't have to be synched, loftwise, with anything else. I'm not one who goes with set loft/distance progressions from driver to lob wedge. I don't play that way. Yeah you are about like me only my SOP is 12 clubs--- Most of my clubs I can hit a variety of shots with--- I do not go by loft or gap either--- yeah for me the clubs that would go with any set would be the 7 wood wedges and putter. But then again if playing strictly vintage I can throw in a persimmon 5 wood which is basically the same loft as the metal 7 wood. Vintage for me is an alltogether different ball game-- The fun for me there is not the score but hitting different clubs I have not hit before or hitting old clubs I have not hit in a while. My options and combinations there are endless. I may have been a little misleading in previous posts--- My 12 standard clubs I carry is for my home course which I play most of the time. I think I have only played 3 courses besides my home course in the last two years. now when I played the minis etc I had a bunch of different set ups depending on the course and conditions. I have been known even in recent years to sneak the persimmon driver in for a hole that I can drive the metal driver through the fairway and can not clear the bend of the dog leg on. On some courses I have been known to pack like 2-56* wedges with different bounces even different brands. Back in the day when I could really hit a ball I did not carry FWs in the summer off of lush grass. My persimmon driver was usually around 10* and I could if I had to hit it off the deck. I also carried a 1 iron I could hit off a tee or off the deck. The oddity was I carried a little laminate 6 wood that I could hit several different shots with. I have always done odd stuff in the normal way of doing things. Flight trajectory may (will) be different, but not being as much of a "feel" player as you may be, hitting the ball is more of a bio-mechanical technical process with me-- very quickly remember how to do it and then do it-- so my main reason for not playing my older clubs is that the grips are all dried out! With dried out grips I do one of 2 things--- I use cheaper grips and put them on with air--- If I end up not being able to hit them I can use the air and take the grip back off and use on another club. I have been blessed in the fact at my old job I found a lot of clubs and sometimes if the clubs were some kind of modern POS clone I would pull the grips with solvent and air especially if they are Tour Wraps. Those are easy to pull. You would be amazed the clubs that have been junked that in fact the grips were worth more than the club itself. Nothing at all wrong with being technical if that is what you want to do and it fits your style. I only play with GP Tour Wraps or Winn Excels because I don't wear a glove and only a wrap-type grip feels right in my hands. Still, I should have acquired some of your skills when I was younger. Yep they are the most durable grip I have ever seen than maybe perhaps the old Crown Cords. Yeah The Tour Wraps if they seem to get slick all you gotta do is clean with mild soap and water and dry them. You just have to experiment with what works for you Most of the courses I play here in Muskoka are tree-lined and pretty similar with respect to the conditions. That's why I'd go with a lower lofted club for the lefty. I'd have to practice it a lot though. Sand is the most variable condition here - even within one course - ranging from hard packed to mud to soft, fluffy sand. Makes wedge choice tricky for a high handicapper like me 8=) Sometimes I just hit a pitching wedge out of the sand so that I don't bounce too much and hit thin. It would be fun to have the budget and time to play and practice with more types of clubs. Maybe when I'm retired I'll be able to experiment as much as I would like.
