Just Got A Scotty Cameron Champions Choice....Should I Use It?!?

Recommended Posts

So...let me just start off by saying I'm not one of those people who has disposable income just lying around. I have a bank account that I put some money in here and there that I will only use on a big golf purchase. Also I have saved up my cash back on my credit card for years that I've told myself I'll use for something big. Generally, the only club in my bag that changes frequently is my putter. However, this year I've really only used one putter which is an old Tour Stock Bettinardi which resembles a BB1. However, last year I was in my local golf shop and was putting with a used Limited Run T22 Newport 2 and absolutely loved the feel of the teryllium insert but couldn't justify the $750 price tag. The guys who work there know me well and offered to knock it down to $650 but I passed on it......kind of wished I didn't now but oh well. Then two weeks ago the guys at the store gave me a call and said they would reserve one of the new Champions Choice putters for me if I wanted. The store manager is a good guy and remembered how long I spent putting with the T22 and put me down on their first to call list. I ended up saying yes and now I have a Champions Choice Newport 2. I'm not planning on buying it to resell it, I want to use it. However, I have this weird feeling that I shouldn't. I don't know, I cant quite explain it but yeah. Lol so long story short, I guess my question is why should I use it? Thanks everyone, appreciate the help!

If I could find a Newport, I'd game it. Maybe the putter will go up in value in a few years, but so will stocks and crypto.

If you like the feel of the Tel3 insert, then play it and have fun for a decade rather than having it in the closet. Value can be assessed in enjoyment as well as in cash.

I'm going to look again today to see if I can find one around here. If so, it'll see grass for sure.

I'd play it for sure.  Just keep it covered and in as good of condition as you can in case you want to sell it down the road.  But to me it's a putter to keep and use.  Enjoy it  You should post some pictures of it.

If you aren’t going to resell it now then play it. Unlike the older versions especially the button back that went up in value after koepkas major wins the price on these will peak in the next couple weeks to maybe a couple months after that the best you will do is get your money back

I'd play it for sure. It's a putter not an oil painting..

As mentioned, you'll get more pleasure from playing with it than making a small gain in value if you resell. Good idea of getting a spare headcover to use though.

This is just so so well said.  And yes, I'd play it but as someone said, maybe get a a really solid putter cover.

I’d play it as it sounds like it checks all the boxes for you. If I was fortunate enough to find the model I liked in the length I play, I’d buy it and put it straight in the bag. I’ve never been a collector. I like to enjoy the things I spend my money on.

I'd assume someone with a few premium putters laying around might have some tricks for keeping them in tip-top shape, but FWIW I'll share my experience with you. I bought my first Scotty in 2017 (the most $$$ I've ever dropped for 1 club) and gamed it for 3 years. I cleaned it regularly and would always wipe it down after with a gun cleaning cloth (Hoppe's to be specific). After 3 years of regular use, it still looked pretty mint when I listed it on eBay last year. All I'm saying is there's no reason you can't enjoy your new putter on the course while maintaining good resale value.

I remember all the clubs I loved then sold, then regretted selling, then moved on ... then found a new one to love. You’ve got to play it to love it. Otherwise it’s just a pretty rock.

I say play it.  I’m not big on collecting things. I’d rather invest that money in something else that will grow if that’s the case.  Life’s too short to not enjoy things so play it!

My son collected Topps and Fleer baseball cards when he was a boy.

He had no illusions that they would someday be valuable.

He just liked the cards.

Thus reproductions, like the Honus Wagner tobacco can card, were just as enjoyable to have as originals

and you didn't have to keep them in a safe..

That's how to treat golf clubs.  If you enjoy looking at them, look at them.

But if you want to play them, play them.

We don't have to get all entrepreneurial about everything we enjoy in life.
