TAYLORMADE GOLF COMPANY INTRODUCES ALL-NEW P·790 IRONS, BUILDING ON THE ACCLAIMED FRANCHISE OF PLAYER’S DISTANCE IRONS

Combining the Newly Engineered SpeedFoam™ Air with an Intelligent Sweet Spot to Help Golfers Obtain New Levels of Power and Performance

CARLSBAD, Calif. (August 10, 2021) – Following the resounding global success of one of the best-selling iron franchises in company history, TaylorMade Golf, an industry leader in product innovation, technology and performance, today announces the third generation of the P·790 irons.

A pioneer in the player's distance iron category, P·790 are built on a foundation of performance and elegance. Delivering power, distance and feel in a package that appeals to a wide range of players. To tackle the task of improving one of the most successful irons in recent history, engineers began by redeveloping the technology that sits at the center of it all.

The all-new SpeedFoam Air, an ultralight urethane foam inside the forged hollow body construction, is 69% less dense than the prior generation. In a world where minor adjustments can lead to major results, the switch to SpeedFoam Air accounts for significant weight savings – an average of 3.5g in respective irons. The change allows for a substantial redistribution of mass to lower CG placement and improved launch properties. Furthermore, it unlocked access to the thinnest face in P·790 history and allowed for the creation of an intelligent sweet spot.

P·790 iron heads are crafted from an 8620 carbon steel that maintains strength and durability while allowing for a new thin-walled design – adding to the overall weight-saving benefits of SpeedFoam Air. This reengineered Forged Hollow Body Construction pairs with a responsive 1.5mm forged 4140 steel L-Face to promote supreme flexibility, fast ball speeds and distance while upholding a premium forged feel.

The company's iron development team charted data from thousands upon thousands of golf shots and determined the most common impact points on the iron face. Utilizing this data, engineers strategically shaped and positioned the sweet spot to capture more of those shots. Results include measurable upticks in ball speed and distance compared to the prior generation. Overall, the sweet spot has been better aligned with center face to naturally provide performance where golfers need it the most.

The 2021 P·790 contains much of the DNA that has made this a dynamic iron franchise for more than five years. Heavy tungsten weighting, up to 31g in an individual iron head, is strategically positioned to deliver both stability and forgiveness. The patented Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™ continues to provide increased face flexibility while preserving ball speed and distance on low face strikes.

Clean and classic aesthetics complete the look of this artfully designed iron. Symmetrical lines and traditional shaping create a look that's cohesive with the full P·700 Series – making P·790 the ideal pairing for combo sets with P·770, P·7MC and even P·7MB in some cases.

P·790 UDI

Complementing the P·790 irons is the P·790 UDI, a forged driving iron designed with Tour-inspired shaping and incorporating proven TaylorMade technologies such as the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket™ and Forged Hollow Body Construction with a new thin-walled design. Like the other irons in the set, the P·790 UDI is powered by the all-new SpeedFoam™ Air and is constructed of a soft, 8620 carbon steel body combined with a high strength forged 4140 carbon steel face.

It features the same intelligent sweet spot that positions performance precisely where golfers need it the most. The head design promotes low spin shots with a piercing trajectory and is built for golfers who want control without sacrificing distance.

One scary comment for me to read: LOWER SPIN.

Yikes. Yes, the launch could be higher to help combat this, but a shot out of the rough would scare me. I’d want a fitting for sure with these, as Tony mentions in his article.

Shocked that these are approaching $200/club. Only a few more dollars a club for Miura……

Beautiful clubs!

I think these may be decent. Shiels did a rather half baked review of these on YouTube and he seemed to not have any issue with flyers but most won't when they hit five balls with a nine iron from the fairway. I think they look good but the offset seems a little heavy. However, while I think the clubs look good, they also look more generic. I'm sure these will perform reasonably well but $1500/set is steep but they aren't alone at that price point. I think if you want a GI iron, there are equally good and much cheaper options out there. However, there aren't a lot of clean looking GI (nearing SGI) irons like this if you're a sucker for aesthetics.

These aren’t technically GI they are players distance and they are IMO 1a and 1b with the new titleist T100 and 100-s in looks. They are also $1299 for 4-p which is predominantly the setup most golfers choose. Not to mention TM has good no upcharge shaft options

Having just gone through an extensive training and presentation on these with TM.  They aren't GI at all.  They are Players Distance Irons with enough forgiveness that a 18 handicap can probably play them without an issue.   Just like the reverse of that from a real life example, just because a +2  handicap can and did play a set of G710's effectively in elite tournament play,  didn't' make them a players iron.

The offset is just a bit more than the P770 and that is by design, the 790 has filled a very nice spot in the TM lineup between it's players clubs and GI irons for the last 4 years.  As for price, the number of 8 piece iron sets sold now days is probably less than 10% of the total sales, and I think I'm being generous there.  So for 7 and often 6 piece sets they are actually not bad at all compared to the market.

I watched Shiels "review" he is no different than any of the YT'ers, more of a promoter of the irons than a critique.   His only criticism was they didn't sound as nice as the previous version.  I've learned a long time go, sound is probably the most subjective aspect of any club, even more so than "feel"   But at least the video gave a good view and look at the clubs.

... I hope that is marketing speak for the current buzz word "low spin". I am with you and these look awesome and I have always loved the shape of TM irons. When I was fit for the last generation P790's this Spring my fitter recommended bending P790 irons 2* weak from pw - the 6 iron, 5 iron 1* weak and 4 iron stock loft, which would increase my spin to a more acceptable level as well as reducing the offset. I would like to limit myself to 3 sets of irons with Cobra MIM Tour irons my gamers, Srixon Z Forged my fun to play MB irons and I am looking at Players Distance irons, specifically these P790's and the new Titleist T200's to use playing longer resort courses or tees longer than normal with friends every now and then. My main concern with P790's is the 5* gaps between the pw-8 scoring irons that produced in-between shots with my last set of P790's. But as far as forgiveness, playability and distance I loved playing P790's.
