RDel90 221
So less than 2 weeks away from the Tour Championship at East Lake. My company is located pretty close to there so we have VIP passes all week. Starting with the Charity round on Wendnesday and then teeing off at 7:30am each day at various local courses before heading over to East Lake for the afternoon for rounds 1-4. I'll try and share as many pictures as I can take!! Any fellow Spies going to be there? 1 Quote Bag: Sun Mountain 4.5 14 way Driver: Ping G400 Max 10.5 deg (set to 9.6 deg/"big minus") Oban Devotion 6 Stiff 65g Grip JumboMax Ultralite X-Small 3W: Ping G410 14.5 deg Mitsubishi Tensei CK Orange Stiff 70g Grip JumboMax Ultralite X-Small Hybrids: 19 deg and 22 deg Ping G410 hybrid Mitsubishi C6 Black Stiff 80g Grip JumboMax Ultralite X-Small Irons: 5-PW Irons PXG 0211 KBS C Taper Tour 120 Stiff -0.50" Grip JumboMax Ultralite X-Small Wedges: 50-07 S-grind, 54-08 D-grind and 58-12 deg D-grind Mizuno T22 Denim Copper Grip JumboMax Ultralite X-Small Putter: PXG Gen2 Spitfire Armlock 37.5" SuperStroke Flatso 3.0 17" Game Ball: Chromesoft X LS / Titleist Left Dot
fixyurdivot 16,620
Well, I for one am still exhausted having watched the BMW to its conclusion. It will be tough for the Tour Championship to top that level of overall play and record setting finish. The flurry of position shuffling has been incredible to watch. Several players seemingly rising from the ashes to make it into the top 30. So here we are at the finish line, East Lake in Atlanta, GA. Who will take home the chump change $15,000,000 check from the $60,000,000 purse? Here is the list of horses and where they will start score wise off #1 tee. DJ starts 7 back of the leader and will need a virtual out of body level of play to make up the gap. To be completely honest, I have never liked the bonus score format and would rather see them do away with it. What are your thoughts on this? 1 Quote G410 Plus, 9 Degree Driver G400 SFT, 16 Degree 3w G400 SFT, 19 Degree 5w ZX5 Irons 4-AW Glide 2.0 56 Degree SW (removed from double secret probation ) ER5v Putter (Evnroll ER5v Official Review)
Shankster 31,814
Still don’t understand why the leader starts way ahead of the pack. This ain’t NASCAR.

I agree that was a terrible move. I would like to see a cumulative three-tournament score be the winner of the Tour Championship. Keep the Fedex points to determine the 30 who qualify, but of those 30, the combined score of the three playoff events is the winner.

More reason for the worldwide tour. A WGC type event playoff… that would be fun. A lot of the same guys would be there anyways.

Maybe 40 instead of 30 make it to the last round. Whatever the number, it is the cumulative scoring that I think would be good.

Along with the “governing bodies”, I read a good chunk of the distance report last night. All of it coincides with people working out more and getting faster after Tiger went nuts… a little common sense here, going from persimmon to 460cc in just a few years… eventually someone was going to figure out how to make the most of it. Same with long putters, leave them alone. Let’s handicap the game even more… especially if you do have a physical condition that you need a long putter, or whatever. Time to get with the times USGA. A little off topic, but working out has nothing to do with it. Distance gains are from equipment technology. Also, the USGA has nothing to do with the Tour Championship format. As to the TV networks, they pay the bills. Match play would have too much risk of the stars not playing on Sunday, too much dead air time as only two groups are out, and an early finish. I think cumulative three tournament scoring is the best solution. Edited August 31, 2021 by LICC

Yep, I also see videos of people using 20 year old equipment(balls and clubs) and still hitting it 300 yards. The distance is largely from the fact that people swing the clubs faster. 3 Quote Driver: G400 Max 9* w/ KBS Tour Driven Fairway: TS3 15* set to 16.5* w/Project X Hzardous Smoke Hybrids: 816H1 19* set at 18* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype 915H 21* w/KBS Tour Graphite Hybrid Prototype Irons: TR20V 5-11 w/Vizard TR20-85 Graphite Wedge: 54-10S 588 58-12 Putter: Directed Force 2.1 Backups: 6330, TM-180, Milled Collection RSX 2, Bellum Winmore 787, mFGP2 Member: MGS Hitsquad since 2017

Working out definitely played a part though. Maybe not lifting weights, but in general the clubs get swung faster. Not trying to be a jerk. Just a friendly conversation regarding this sport.

The bulk of distance gains on tour could be attributed to the difference in hitting down with driver versus a couple degrees up. If you don't think physical training contributes - go look up Martin Borgmeier. It's not his new driver allowing him to hit 400+ yards carry. Knowledge is cumulative and exercise science is an area of rapid development, especially with the money flowing into the sport since Tiger. The genie is out of the bottle now, speed is going to take off in the next 5 years. Tiger pushed a step change evolution we are just seeing now around general fitness. Bryson and Mark Broadie are about to push the next one coupled with instant feedback on launch monitors. Yes, I agree- all of the equipment advances have contributed. Players are able to swing differently (more aggressively) today than decades ago because of the equipment. When it comes to the PGA Tour, IMO physical training contributes hardly anything to the distance gains.
