Ribbed Grips

Recommended Posts

I'm intrigued, by the idea of using a ribbed grip. I saw a video about using a piece of string down the back of the grip taped in place and the grip installed over it giving a rib..

Has anyone done this?? do you like them? Thoughts???

Thanks

I've used ribbed grips in the past. They were okay, but I didn't see any tremendous benefit personally.

The primary issue with ribbed grips is you have to be much more exact with alignment. Not something I'd recommend if you're a stickler about that (like I am). Never tried the string method, but the alignment issue remains and is likely made worse trying to get the string in position.

If you really wanted to experiment with it, I'd suggest using the air compressor method of installation - place the string under some masking tape and blow the grip on after. Allows you to easily remove the grip if you don't like the placement of the string.

Because I don't wear a glove, I'm only comfortable with perforated, simulated soft leather, wrap style grips.

My first brand new set had rubber grips, and, mostly because everybody else did, I did use a glove back then.

Golfworks has a product that can be placed on the shaft making a more pronounced rib. Easy to use and makes a go rib.

Driver - 44.5" 5.0 flex 10.5 deg Graphite Design XC 6S GP MCC4+ 1 deg closed

Irons - 5-pw, GW stnd length 5.0 flex same grip 1 deg flat. Type low medium offset cavity back, no diggers

Wedges - 56 and 60 tour grind wedge spinner and mcc4+ grip 2 flat 10 and 8 in bounce

I used the GP Align on a couple of clubs - I didn't really see the benefit after a season, especially considering the increased cost - or complexity if you're doing them yourself.

However, I'm very fussy about the alignment mark on my grips when I install them - especially since I use a strong grip. That alignment mark to the V in my hand is one of the last things I check before I start my backswing. i

I used to use Golf Pride Tour Wrap grips with the reminder rib.  Its worth noting that you can get grips with the rib far cheaper than paying for the "Align" grips.  For instance, the GP Tour Velvet ribbed grip is $5.99, the GP Tour Velvet  Align grip is $9.99.  I can't see how the Align grip is worth $4 more than the basic ribbed grip.
