Caddies and Pros

Forgive me if this a stupid or tired question, but I was reading the thread about green reading books and started to wonder about a caddy’s role in golf. So I wanted to ask, if caddies were no longer allowed at the tour level, would the list of the top 10 golfers look different?

Potentially as the caddies do more than just pulling clubs, cleaning clubs, and giving distances.   They help keep the player focusing on the right things and help with decision making.   These players also played for years without caddies so it may have no impact at all if there wasn't a caddie.

Like @cnosil noted, many caddies are there to help assess different lies and situations, act as a sounding board and offer their thoughts vs what the pro wants to pull out of the bag. Caddies can also help calm a player down OR ramp them up if the situation calls for it. I am not sure if the Top 10 would look different, but I do think that you'd see some different players on tour just due to the nature of the mental aspect of the game that the caddies can help out on.

  • 2 weeks later...

Lee Westwood says his caddie/girlfriend is all mental. He’s not in the top 10, but he’s pretty good and was definitely in a bit of a lull for a while.

As an aside, I wonder how slow Bryson might play without the caddy helping with his calculations, granted I can’t remember if he was already slow in college or not.
