On my first set of new irons back in the 90's I put two layers of lead tape in the cavity and matched the profile so it wasn't obvious.

... Yup, I did something similar with my Tour Stage Z101 irons, putting the lead tape on the ledge of the cavity so it wasn't visible. Took a lot of extra work, carving and extra tape as a lot was wasted but those irons were so beautiful to begin with I hated to sully their appearance. 25 years later I would not put in that kind of effort. 🤪

Took this pic last year, when I was taking my TW282 Golden Rams to the course, and was playing persimmons/laminates only.  You can see many/most of the clubs have some good old lead tape on them

I play unique lengths and do a poor mans MOI type matching along with testing on the range and with the dry erase marker.   So I start my build as a poor mans DIY MOI match without the expensive scale, then more or less weight is put on the clubs depending upon what I am trying to get to.

Club Loft SW Length
LW 60 D7.2 36.75"
SW 54 D7.4 37
AW 50 D7.4 37
PW 46 D7.2 37.25"
9 42 D6.8 37.5"
8 38 D6.5 37.75"
7 34 D6 38"
6 30 D5.5 38-3/8"
5 26 D5 38-6/8"
4 22 D4.5 39-1/8"
2 18 D4 39-3/4"

Yep you basically do it the same way I do

... Hybrids don't last long in my bag because I seem to hit some of my worst shots with them and prefer an iron or a 5 wood. I realize sooner or later I will have to add hybrids and drop my long irons, but until then my King 4 iron and TP 2 iron are my go to clubs.

I think with me I am in a double transition period. Coming off the back and shoulder injuries plus getting older I have had to change some aspects of my game. This week I have been playing vintage and so I do some stuff I do not normally do anymore--- I was actually hitting my 62 FC-4000 2 iron off a couple of tees and hit a 3 iron off a flyer lie in the rough--- On one of our holes I had been carrying my Ping 1 iron for that tee shot. Found out if it was dry I could hit a punch cut 3 wood if it was wet I could do the same thing with the driver. The 1 iron if it was wet I tried to push it some and ending up pull hooking it. So I did a revamp there. More consistant. But I can not hit the long irons like I used to but still hit them decent. Stuff like the Shootout though I use the 7 wood a lot. Hybrids I have played some but have never had confidence in them.

... I am fighting him to a draw at the moment, although I know it is only temporary at best. I am playing an 18* UDi TP 2 iron that is just a liiiiiiittle more forgiving than that Ram butterknife. 😉

Learned a little trick from my past yesterday actually remembered the trick. Played yesterday and the wind was up some. Had both the metal woods and persimmon in the bag. On the 13th ( Par 4 ) the wind was up and I tried to hit a knockdown with the Persimmon left me out about 210 or so in light rough. The ball was sitting good. Now normally I would have hit the 3 wood in the shootout from that distance but not out of that lie with the wind blowing. I tend to baloon any type of fairway out of that lie. Yeah WTH? that is what a 2 iron is made for. I was just practicing anyhow. Hit the 2 iron about a head high cut that ran up on the green 3 feet away. That was a bonus I was just trying to get into range where I could get something under it and get up and down for a Par. Yep that 2 iron will stay in the bag for today and the Shootout tomorrow. Normal lie out of the fairway I can only get it waist high and about 190 or so with the runout. Yeah I flushed that off a flyer lie

I have lead tape on my wedges to help me (mentally more than anything) maintain smooth tempo with them:

More recently, and I don't have a picture, I put lead tape (two wraps around so not a ton) just below the bottom of the grip on my driver to counter balance my driver and add a little feeling of "weight" to the shaft and, maybe coincidence, I am hitting my driver much better as of late.

I have see the trick of putting tape below the grip before especially a putter. A few years back they made a clamp type thing to go on a putter shaft for weight. I personally have not tried it but can see it may balance a club for ones feel. Yep like your set up modern Hogans with older Cleveland wedges

Added 2” of lead tape to the 5i thru the GW, and I know the difference is to be expected, but absolutely the irons feel significantly better to me.

Recently changed out my grips, which are now about 6g heavier, but the tape was mainly to assist me in feeling the club head in my backswing. Have been slowly trying to implement a simple swing change in having a much shorter back swing … and was having trouble feeling the club head in transition and can feel the difference now.

May add another inch only after I see how they play on the range and the course. Not gonna lie, I dig the look! Lol
