DeChambeau LD Contest Debut

Well, not really a "debut" since he's been launching balls record distances all over the tour stops but technically his debut at a sanctioned World Long Drive Event.  When he's got the accuracy part going along with distance, like this past weekend, it is an advantage - especially married up with the OL's.

Anyway, I was kind of intrigued about his first attempt at WLD Competitions and his debut this coming weekend in Mesquite NV.  I usually don't watch the LD contests unless they just happen to be what's available but I hope he does well and will check coverage to see if, by chance, I can watch live or replay.  I'm sure the folks that run the WLD contests are pretty jacked about his participation - that is certain to increase interest.  Anyone else interested in this?  Rumor has it that @Yellow Ballwill be in attendance... but that's just a rumor.

Well Bryson isn't a spy so he's not worthy!  Yup I said it.. He's not worthy. You guys are just so so so  special to me! He would probably cry by the time I was done anyway. Besides, if I went I would be writing a book instead of a short story. He already has enough material out there for me to keep me tied up for weeks. 

Plus there is a slight bit of self preservation involved. It took me a bit to get over what @Chip Strokesdid to me. Yellow Ball is to young to get old age cracks. I couldn't just go to watch. You know I got to be part of the action.

But I will say that I've been traveling for a few weeks and have a few people to report on from the western side of the US. Anyone nervous yet. If so, too bad, suck it up and take it like a man!

Losing sense of time and what day of the week it is a benefit that comes with retirement. Thanks for the correction and link.

I have been looking forward to this for a while!  It's incredible what these long drive guys can do with a golf ball.  Not expecting much in terms of competing with the Justin James' and Kyle Berkshires of the world but hope Bryson is competitive enough to help drive more interest to the competition.

Why would he? If I was an entrant and got beat I don’t want a handout from the person who beat me. Everyone there is a competitor, doubt any of them would take the handout because someone beat them that doesn’t normally compete on the tour. If anything give the winnings to charity

Bryson just went 403. I have to think he's getting out of this round robin of his group. I think that puts him atop his 4 player pod. It's the top 12 of the the 16

Followed by a 407 with the last ball, not that it matters.  Announcers are saying that there isn't much rollout and the wind looks like it's a left to right crosswind. 

Edit:  glad they showed the flag on top of the canyon.  That's a heck of a tailwind!

Seeing his clubhead and ball speeds over this year I thought he would compete at least in early rounds like he has been crushing.  Now I think he's got a chance at top 16 or maybe even top 8.

John, it isn't just that. This dude was at the Ryder Cup two days ago after a long PGA Tour season. Now in a completely different discipline he's showing up and not just scrapping by, he's competing with an actual chance to go deep into this competition. It's like taking Ronaldo or Messi from a soccer season, where they work on kicking an NFL football a decent amount, then having them kick against college and pro level kickers in American Football and they're in the top 5

Exactly. I was also noting that his pre-swing set-up/timing is different for this event since it's timed.  The number of head bobs and the final position off the ground is not the same... cool that he is able to switch up like that and still get the results.

It is definitely different;  his last swing in the first set didn't count since he ran out of time.   

Look at the distances in Group D,  Bryson isn't scaring them.   Kyle at 439 and a few others well over the 400 mark.

Too be fair to Bryson and all the competitors prior. They are saying that the conditions are much more advantageous to big drives right now compared to earlier

valid  point.  All you need to be worried about is the people that you are competing against to get to the next round.

Agreed 100% Cnosil, if this event were in a vacuum I dont think Bryson would stand a chance,but with his surprising accuracy at getting balls in the grid and the potential for weather to be a factor, he's in with a shout.

So this round it's the top half of your group advancing using that round Robin scoring per round. 200 ppints for winning your 4 person set, 100 for second, 50 for third, 25 for 4th.

Good news for Bryson is that this pod seemingly isn't super deep. Scottie Pearman qualified 1st in Bryson's group yesterday, Borgmiester is a pure ball speed guy, and Ryan Steenberg is a name you might remember from WLD events. But he can finish top 8 to get to the last pod round tomorrow I think

I don't think Kyle is too worried if they get the chance to match up.  Bryson has certainly made himself competitive but Kyle is on another level.  Between those two it's his to lose.  I think Bryson will continue chasing gainz, but I don't think he has to re-do the hulk project.  He knows how to hit a golf ball and he will keep taking his gains one step at a time. 

If he did, I think he remains close to the same player he is.  The good long drive guys are generally good ball strikers and have generally good mechanics, so that doesn't change.  The only detriment I see is to the touch shots simply because of diverting practice time away from short game practice in order to spend more time in the gym.

Agree. Kyle’s on course driver swing speed is 145. He’s a beast. He hits balls at the range by me every so often and a friend mine happened to be there one day. He marveled at how fast his swing is and the flight

The flight he has is impressive with only 3* loft if I remember right
