Waste of Money

Recommended Posts

At the risk of raising the ire of someone who is superior to me, I will ask a question that might piss them off.  Yes, I have searched the database for a thread that covers this, but could not find one.  Please excuse my egregious error if there was one and I did not find it. What have you bought, golf related, that you really wanted, but after you bought it, you now consider it a waste of money?  As for myself it is a laser rangefinder.  Since I have started using a gps app on my phone, I cannot remember the last time I’ve used my laser rangefinder.

While I’m a huge fan of laser rangefinders, the Shot Scope Pro L1 unit that I put into play a few months ago has been returning garbage distance readings of late - it’s all over the place. Definitely feels like wasted money right now but hopefully the replacement they’re sending out will be an improvement.

brand name gloves are a pretty big waste of money.

i bought 10 MG gloves with my initials on them for the price of 3 premium titleist or footjoy gloves.

I'm still working through it, but IMO Arccos sensors. The number of missed shots during a round is diabolical, and I've tried all of the support strategies and suggested fixes on their website (and other sites that propose fixes). Perhaps the software updates that have occurred of late have made improvements (I haven't played for a few months), but at this point in time, there's little chance of choosing to renew my subscription once it expires.

Most of the money that I've wasted has been on buy-before you try online ordered golf clubs.

I keep the clubs that I've actually played forever in my collection,

but the ones for which I've had buyer's remorse have gotten sold with my taking a big bath on them.

As for rangefinders, I'm told that they're more accurate than GPS if you have a line of view, but I still prefer hand held GPS.

I must have gotten lucky and bought one that works.  I actually bought it from our BST. Not long after acquiring mine, a friend who has a laser rangefinder and was checking my shots (freshly picked range) to what my SC200 was showing. The range was damp and balls hit with the 7i up not rolling out much at all.  The numbers were very close.  I also had a chance to repeat this with a guy using a Mevo+ (set the SC200 right next to it) and again within a few yards.

I have heard of folks complaining about SC200 inconsistencies, but I haven't experienced that - at least in "practice mode" with the club lofts set correctly and with the device placed at the correct distance behind the ball.  Loses some shots once in awhile but generally very happy with it.

In answer to the OP's question, I found the Golf Buddy V2 to be irritating.  It frequently lost satellite signal.  When you get hooked on these devices you suddenly feel lost on the course 😲.  I had to find a yard marker, pace off, and do some math 😆.

Early on my SC200 was spot on compared to Trackman for swing speed and ball speed. Over the winter (2021) something happened and the variance next to other monitors is +/- 7 mph. At one point I had found a way to reset it, but since lost the instructions and couldn't get customer support to respond.  BTW, I agree on the Golfbuddy - my wife is usually cycling it on and off a couple of times because of signal loss.

I am still using the Precision Pro I tested for MGS quite a few years ago--- I do not rely on GPS. A lot of my scramble partners use GPS and can not understand when I come up with a different yardage. I tell them mine are at the pin and they still do not comprehend. Also at my home course which I know like the back of my hand I calculate the distance the ball needs to land plus take in the slope and wind. Most of the time when playing by myself I do not even take my rangefinder out of the bag. I know where I need to hit the ball as far as yardage and pin placement. On courses I do not know as well I go straight to the pin on club selection.

Tough call. I did, for a while, carry around a lot of non-versatile clubs that might get used only once a round. I still have a few clubs that are not used often (2 hybrid, namely), but everything in the bag is something I can hit and can be used in multiple situations.

Even my training aids have a purpose, but there are plenty that can be had for cheaper if you DIY or find used. The DownUnder Board comes to mind. Very useful for me, but realistically a baking pan would provide the same feedback at 1/6th of the cost.

I don't use GPS because it's more accurate.  It isn't.

I use it because It's easier.

But as with you, I pretty much know where I am anywhere on my home track.  For better or worse, I've seen pretty much all of it.

I use a Shotscope V3, the GPS function on my Grint app, and a range finder. I am also an engineer and firm believer in multiple sources of data to confirm. I do find the GPS app is limited in the sense that it does not know the pin location for each day so that is where the range finder comes into play. At a certain point, FMB pin locations can be the difference between a tap in birdie and a long 3 putt.

For me it's a laser rangefinder. I am not accurate enough to need that level of precision. My phone app that shows front middle and back of the green distances is good enough for my purposes, and easier to use.

I have both the laser and a watch GPS unit but rarely use the laser. My greens are small so the front, middle, back doesn't mean as much as a course with large greens.

My wife uses the laser; I use GPS.  Our greens are not huge, but fair-sized, mostly long and narrow.  If the pin is a "red" flag, I split the difference between Front and Middle; if the pin is a "blue" flag, I split the difference between Middle and Back.  Sometimes it's helpful on a par 3 to know the exact yardage, and my wife will always oblige.

I consider any tee that claims that it will give you more yardage to be a waste of money.

Buying any tee is a waste of money.  I can start out with 2 tees in my bag and when I finish a round, I'll have 5-6.  In a month I have to empty the pocket on the bag and take out a hundred or more.  People just leave them on the tee boxes.

Were you using the Link or phone to detect shots? I had the link and missed a lot of shots. Worked with support and turned out there was an issue with my Link (played a couple rounds with phone in pocket that worked much better for shot detection) so they sent me a new one. Some other tips, the sensors are photosensitive activated by sunlight so overcast days/early morning/twilight may miss some shots. Also if you have to pull multiple clubs from the bag, carry them upside down until you chose your club. I then take my towel and cover the sensor of the club I'm not using. I was on the verge of pulling the plug myself until I got the new link.

Golf club headcovers. They are always released and just different enough than the previous version to get you hooked. Only a few are worth anything. A real flavor of the month product
