Want to take out 17 Callaway Super Hybrid and replace with Callaway Epic Speed 5 wood.

Recommended Posts

I haven't hit a 5 wood in 20 years, long ago added a hybrid to replace the wood.

Has anyone spent any time evaluating a 5 wood versus a strong (17 degree) hybrid with what results?

This all comes up after I hit a buddies 5 wood and was smoking it.  What would be the advantage of a 5 wood? a hybrid?

Thoughts?

Like you I removed my 5-wood eons ago and have 3w & 3H set-up. The 5 was great from the fairway, but since I'm rarely there I felt the 3H was a more versatile club and I was not giving up much in the way of distance. The other day I hit a buddy's new Ping 5 wood and was blistering it at the range, part of the reason was his clubs are an inch longer, he's almost a foot taller than me. We talked about it afterwords and he felt like it was giving him a better gap between his woods & iron, but I came away with the same feeling I previously had, stay with a club that offers multiple uses versus a club you are only going to pull for a specific distance you get into 1-2 times a round.

Most people will find the 5 wood has a higher launch. If that is the case for you, the question is do you find the hybrid runs out too far?  If so, the 5 wood may be the ticket. Of course, being a club ho, I would get a 5 wood and keep the hybrid to swap out depending on the course and conditions.

I changed my shaft in my super hybrid and on the range love it now. Ventus blue 8s flies high and straight. Never got along with 3w and best club I used to have was an aeroburner 5w. Now I go super hybrid failed down to 16 and sub70 3H around 18. Gapping works for me. YMMV. Good luck.

edit to add. I hit the speed 3w at DGS. Hit it ok but no height and was heel heavy. The top of the bag can be were versatile clubs are great. Punch shots, alternate driving club, etc…
