Are Ping iron heads heavier than other brands?

I ask because it seems every time I hit a Ping demo iron it seems heavy. For example, I recently hit a Mizuno head on a Modus 105 shaft and it felt noticeably lighter than a Ping G425 head on a Ping AWT shaft. And the Modus shaft was a half inch longer.

14 of the following:

Ping G430 Max 10.5 degree

Callaway 2023 Big Bertha 3 wood set to 17 degrees

Cobra F9 Speedback 7/8 wood set at 23.5 degrees

Callaway Epic Max 11 wood

Ping Eye 2 BeCu 2-SW

Mizuno 923 JPX HM HL 6-GW

Hogan sand wedge 56 degree bent to 53

Maltby M Series+ 54 degree

Ping Glide 3.0 Eye2 58 degree

Ping Glide 3.0 60 degree

Evnroll ER2

Ping Sigma 2 Anser

Someone should be able to answer this, I’m curious also.

I went to the Golfworks playability table, and the 425 head was 10 grams LIGHTER than the Mizuno. So that doesn’t explain. At least not in the particular heads Golfworks measured. It occurs to me that Ping counter balances their graphite shafts. Do they do that with the steel AWT?
Also, the Mizuno head was a yellow number fitting head. I thought that indicated 2 degrees up. Could it indicate a lighter head?

I had Mizuno 919 & Ping G710 irons. The Pings do feel heavier, both irons had same shafts.

I'm not all that familiar with the weight of Ping heads but the OEMs should list the head weight under specs on their websites.

That said, you may also want to look into the profiles of the individual shafts and build specs of the Pings vs Mizuno. Assuming the shafts are in the same weight class, they could have different balance points which could make the swingweight heavier or lighter.  Sometimes they build clubs with tip weights as to get the swingweight up which can help with how the club feels through the swing. Also if the ping was so much as .25" longer, that will change the swingweight to feel heavier.

And lastly, if the grip on one shaft vs the other is lighter 10g which is very common, that could add 2 swingweight points and a slightly noticeable difference.

Bottom line is that there could be a few variables at play here. Hopefully this at least have you a few leads as to how to find the difference between the 2. 🙂

Here are my .02

.

The yellow color code on the Pine Fitting Iron head indicates that is is weighted for an overlength build.  Typically, these heads are lighter so that the swingweight of a longer or graphite club build will feel normal.

For completed builds direct from Ping, you can request heavier or lighter heads.  There is some wiggle room on the builds.

I hope this helps.
