Anyone playing a 6 degree gap between pitching wedge and gap wedge?

I’ve noticed that some strong lofted sets come with a 6 degree gap between wedges. Obviously, if this caused problems, you could adjust the lofts. But I was wondering if folks who have a set up like this find the gap to be too large. I have seen some write that the designers know what they’re doing and the gapping should be just fine, but the cynic in me suspects the big gap is a compromise.

I have played that gap and sometimes still do when I put the TW wedges in the bag. I have a 50* gw and the tw sw is 56.

It doesnt bother me because I am comfortable playing partial shots with gw and pw.

Same for me. I have my 44, 48, 52 and 58 degree wedges. But I'm generally more comfortable hitting partial shots with my 48 and 58 than I am hitting full or partial shots with my 52. So in essence, my bag is 44, 48 and 58 except for pretty specific situations.

My wedges are 44,48,54,58.  So the biggest gap is between my GW and SW.  I prefer to take some off my GW than trying to nuke my SW.  But i really dont see a huge gap between them.

This is why it's good to get a gapping analysis if at all possible. I go from a set wedge at 43* and then at Club Champion during the wedge fit we worked on spacing those gaps perfectly to cover a ton of shot types and distance and ended up with the 48/53/58 set I'm running with for the future. 5 degrees for me is where it is at.

I am currently not playing a GW.  I have an 8º difference between my MacGregor PW, which I strengthened from 48º to 46º and my SW which is 54º.  LW is 60º.

With a 42° 9-iron, I don’t use the set matching 46° PW.

I go with 6° gaps throughout the short end with the 9-iron and a 48-54-60°  wedge complement.

No problem for me, but a stronger-lofted 9-iron might have created  a problem in configuring the set.

my z585 PW and GW are 44 and 50 I think. Then I play a 56* and 60*. It doesn't cause me issues, but maybe I'm just used to it?

I have the same irons and gapping, the there is ~16yd distance gap between PW and GW. Over the past season there were only 2 real instances where I found myself directly between clubs and had to make a tougher decision.

45, 50, 54, 58 is what I play.  With max partial shot shots in the mix, this set me up with 8 known carry distances between 75 - 125.

full 45, full 50, partial 45, full 54, partial 50, full 58, partial 54, partial 58

For me max partial shot is a full turn shot without active release of the hands.   Below 75, I'm hitting same type shots with smaller turns giving additional distances.  I limit those to just 54 and 58 which are specialty wedges, CBX2.

I heard Lee Trevino say relatively late in his career when asked how many wedges he normally carried in his bag, (one and when I think I can hit that pretty well I might try a second one)

Just another perspective from a player who had a decent short game.

Currently playing 4° gaps (46, 50, 54, 58) but just cause I'm used to my wedge grid that Pelz taught but I'm seeing quite a bit of over lap so I may go back to 3 wedges and larger gaps. TXG had a nice little video about this. For me, the wedge grid is a smarter way to figure things on the course, especially with 3 wedges

Identical for me, 44°, 48°, 52° & 58°....... I'm comfortable manipulating my 52°

Traditionally I went 48 56 and sometimes 60. Right now I am in a major transition stage both swing and equipment. Coming off of steel shafted blades with traditional lofts to graphite and somewhat jacked lofts I am having to change stuff around some. My current set the PW is 46* and the combination of the shafts and somewhat hot faces has me in experiment mode. I went with a "Gap" wedge for the first time about a month ago. I was using the Mack Daddy 52 in my signature. I am also experimenting with a Old School Macgregor VFQ 11 iron I bought back in November. It checks out at 50*. I have used it quite a bit messing around and I am sorta getting the old feel back with it. Had one like it when I was younger and it got stolen.  Also right now working on dialing in the 56 PM wedge. I did an extensive sole grind on it going from 13* to 10* bounce. Been messing around with weight placement and getting used to the feel. With the Mac wedge and the different shots I am relearning with it I think I can pretty much cover a 6* gap. Someone may ask why do I not since I have my loft and lie machine bump the 56 back some? Simple answer is I have remember my own custom sole grind on it and it is ground to 56* loft and 64* lie. Bumping it back even 2* will mess with the bounce in more than one way. I think I have said this before I only carry 12 clubs as SOP and it leaves me room on either end to add. On courses around here that have soft fluffy greenside bunkers I will slip one of my 60*  LW in. Depends on my knowledge of the course what LW I slip in because there it is all about the bounce. Normally I do not have a lot of bounce on wedges I hit out of the fairway
