Middler
I’ll spare you all the details (I’m 67 yo) but briefly after walking 18 routinely, last April I woke up one morning after a round and could hardly stand on my right knee. There was no indication after the round that anything was wrong, wasn’t until getting out of bed the next morning. Tried again a month later and my knee hurt so bad I couldn’t play golf for two weeks. So nothing but playing riding a golf cart since May, and exercise walking 2-6 miles in the neighborhood. My knee still doesn’t feel 100% but almost. So yesterday I finally walked playing golf again, but I was so concerned I only walked/played 12 holes. I deliberately made it a point to sit and rest for a minute or so every couple holes, never done that before. I was very anxious last night but I woke up this morning and my knee is OK. So I’m wondering if just sitting and ‘taking a load off’ might make a big difference going forward? I talked to two of my golf buddies who walk regularly and they insist sitting periodically does make a difference. I searched online and didn’t find anything regarding sitting/walking. Could sitting periodically really make a big difference? I would much prefer walking, especially this time of year when (power) carts are cart path only, so walking is far better IMO. sirchunksalot and cksurfdude 2 Quote Titleist TSR2 11° HZRDUS Red CB 50 6.0 w Lamkin UTx Midsize Titleist TSR2 16.5º HZRDUS Red 60 CB 6.0 & TSR2 21º HZRDUS Black 4G 70 6.0 w Lamkin UTx Midsize Mizuno JPX923 HMP 4-GW, T22 54.12WS, T22 58.04DC w Lamkin ST+2 Hybrid Midsize Evnroll EV5.3 Maxfli Tour & ProV1 Ping Pioneer - MGI Zip Navigator AT Payntr X 002 LE, Ecco Biom C4, FJ DryJoys
cnosil
IMO there could be a long list or reasons. And I can play 18 with a power cart or just exercise walk who knows how far (6.5 miles at least) now, so I’m afraid he won’t be able to diagnose until I’m “injured” again? But again, I’m asking here if sitting periodically can make a significant difference for (golf) walkers? I don’t like to waste medical expenses. cksurfdude 1 Quote Titleist TSR2 11° HZRDUS Red CB 50 6.0 w Lamkin UTx Midsize Titleist TSR2 16.5º HZRDUS Red 60 CB 6.0 & TSR2 21º HZRDUS Black 4G 70 6.0 w Lamkin UTx Midsize Mizuno JPX923 HMP 4-GW, T22 54.12WS, T22 58.04DC w Lamkin ST+2 Hybrid Midsize Evnroll EV5.3 Maxfli Tour & ProV1 Ping Pioneer - MGI Zip Navigator AT Payntr X 002 LE, Ecco Biom C4, FJ DryJoys
Siamese Moose
I'm currently in physical therapy for my right knee, and I'm also a walker by preference. I have a Clicgear push cart with a seat attachment. It makes a world of difference to me to be able to sit for a few moments regularly throughout a round. If I'm waiting on a tee, sit down! Waiting for another player, sit down. There are people in my league who used to poke fun at me over the seat. Then I pointed out that they're all riding, and sitting far more than I am. In a four hour round I probably end up sitting about 20 minutes, but I am definitely fresher for it, and it shows in my scores, as well as how I feel later in the day. Good luck! I don’t like to waste medical expenses. From a personal opinion sure. Seems like you potentially have an injury that flares up due to the combination golf swing and walking. Walking includes hills which put addition stress on the knee. Rest always seems to help with overuse type injuries. And was also gonna suggest get a seat attachment for your pushcart (and in case of "do as i say" .. my wife not only got me a high end electric trolley last year but also splurged on the seat accessory .. but which i have not yet used..! ..but plan on using in the coming year). In my experience (65 yo, almost 66) with one bad knee and one so-so knee plus one replaced hip and one possibly on the way towards replacement hip (in addition to some spinal issues) -- standing statically, without moving, *IS* very difficult on the joints!! At the very least walk around slowly and/or do some slight squat/knee bends and/or (anything!) vs just standing still....... cnosil, Siamese Moose, Middler and 1 other 4 Quote WITB of an "aspiring" play-ah ... melcoeb
also a walker here. I always walk at my local course with an electric cart. Came with a seat attachment which I've never used; will definitely use it in upcoming season as an experiment to see if I'm less tired when I finish. tehuti
I occasionally have a similar experience. Like yesterday, I walked 18 on an executive course with my pushcart. No problem with my knees, although I do have an issue with my left heel. But after playing and cooling down my right knee really started bothering me. It's still a bit sore, but not as bad as yesterday. This seems to happen every few rounds. Though I never have a problem with it until after my round. At 63 I guess it just goes with the territory. Hickory4ever
I am also 67 and have a bad right knee requiring a custom brace. I walk 90% of the time using a Clicgear with the seat attachment. It helps a lot and I play many days in a row. In your initial post you mentioned that it was only when golfing that you had the problem and could still walk several miles. My question is are you swinging too hard as that puts added stress on the right knee. I dialed things back a bit on my swing and it helps a lot. I also have softer soled shoes as they reduce the stress and pounding. Talk to your primary care physician if I can, some of the advice I gave you came from mine, he is also one of my golf buddies. I plan to keep walking for the health benefits. Quote Play everything from the hickory era to modern equipment.
