Kirkland v2

Put one of these thru a true test yesterday at The Vineyard.

Early in the round, i hit two trees dead center and then bounced it off the cart path on the par3 4th. I was expecting it to be unusable after watching some reviews and hearing some of you guys talk about them. The second tree hit did leave a small cut all the way thru the urethane cover but it didn't seem to scuff up any worse than the other balls I've used recently.

With there not being ball washers on my local courses yet(cold temps), i had been throwing any that picked up an excessive amount of mud back in the bag to clean  later but i kept cleaning this one off and using it just to see how "bad" it got. It seemed to perform just like the fresh ones up until i hit a "practice" shot with it on 9's tee and forgot to pick it up.

Finally got out for a round yesterday and I'm liking these balls more and more. They have tremendous stopping power on the greens(especially noticeable on chip shots) but at the same time, I don't really notice any loss of distance off the tee like some have stated.

I recently played with a low single index player here in Yuma who was playing Kirkland.  This guy plays blue tees and is one of the longer hitters I've seen/played with in the area. I figured they must be the originals but, nope, the V2's. He knew all about the MGS ball test data (not a member) and prevailing thoughts about these balls. I asked why he chooses this ball and his answer was simple; "they flat out compete with any balls I've played".

But the question is...  Did you ask why he wasn't a MGS member?

No, I didn't want to come across as a pushy salesman 😉.  I've run across a handful of folks on courses who know about MGS.  Some are aware of the forum but only lurk while others only from the HQ testing and first look articles. I guess some just aren't into the social media world.

I understand.  Martha mentions MGS when she meets new people when they discuss golf clubs.  Many have heard of MGS, but never express an interest in the forum.  I have my bag tag, and if anyone mentions it, then I talk about MGS.  Doesn't happen very often.

Like anything everyone’s experience is different. I’m a 13 handicap and my driver has way too much spin which isn’t helped by these balls. The key is finding something that works for your game in a price you’re comfortable with.

Four out of the five balls I find lying lost on the course I play most often are Kirkland. Maybe at their price point, their former owners don't bother looking for them. I don't know v1 vs v2, but drop them all in a basket near the clubhouse in case someone wants them. They hold no appeal to me.

Is it "illegal" to dye balls? I imagine the right vegitable dye could make a decent stain to make them yellow...

...or better yet, a chartreuse fishing lure dye might be even better.

There are online videos. I tried to dye Pro-Vs, wasn’t happy with the results. I wouldn’t try them in competition as a “foreign agent” has been applied to the ball. But for a Saturday sawbuck, have fun. There is a Maxflight Tour that had a price of $25 a dozen. Has a better rating than the Kirkland. Might try those for charity scrambles where I would take the risky shot I wouldn’t take in competition.

You get what you pay for. For a midweek game with the fellas they are playable, for anything other than that, premium is premium. Single digits can tell the difference and consistency of quality matters. I scuff them up before I lose them.

I used to play the V2 exclusively because I lost balls off the tee very regularly. As I’ve gotten better, I’ve switched to the Maxfli Tour CG.

Because of their spin characteristics (a lot), they would be good to use if you get to a course with very firm greens that are hard to get your normal ball to check up. I played a firm course last week but didn’t have any on me to try and compare their ability to check up on the green.

  • 5 weeks later...

I finally was able to go to Costco about a month ago as we now live 300kms from the nearest one and picked up a box. Since then I have managed to play 6 rounds with them. Overall I am reasonably impressed. The only negative is the click sound they make when putting which indicates they are harder. However I have found little difference in distance or stopping power compared to my usual ball (Seed 01) or Pro V1’s.

Note: I had not tried a Pro V1x until I found a couple the other day and I have to say that the KIRKLAND’s feel and performance was almost identical.

I still prefer the sound of the Seed off the putter but for the price $48AUD (2 Doz) they are 1/2 the price of the Seed and almost 1/3 the price of Pro V1’s.

Considering the way I am playing lately, I have lost 8 balls in the last 5 rounds I find that these golf balls for the money are excellent value and that the positives out way the one negative.

I just had a friend from my disc golfing crew that has a membership pick up 4dz for me and 2dz for my golfing buddy. I shouldn't have to buy balls all year... and hopefully two lol.

I can't believe i had to do it but i just received another 2dz box of Kirklands off of Amazon, lol. I've played a crapload of golf this year and between dunking them in ponds, plugging them in wet spring fairways, losing them in tall grass/woods or just leaving them after a few minutes looking with no luck, retiring 8 or so after they hit rocks/cart paths/and one that got nearly cut in half(when i hit it into a high tension power line tower from about 20yds away after i failed to punch a 6i thru its legs lol), giving two sleeves away to random people i got paired with as a walkon, etc etc etc... I have managed to go thru all but two sleeves of the 5dz i purchased over the winter...

It's ridiculous how many balls i go thru... I guess i never really noticed it before. Back when i was playing a lot in the early 2000's, i didn't have to buy balls as i worked at a course and found plenty(I still have a bag in the garage with a couple dozen xl2000s, DT 90s, Nike's and assorted other balls).

As far as performance goes, i couldn't be happier. They are excellent balls and I'm sure glad i only spent $70 on those instead of the $150-$250 i could have spent on "better" more expensive ones.

The version 2 Kirklands are very good. I can't imagine any 13+ handicap would really tell any difference in performance from any other premium ball. They may (stress MAY) scuff a little easier than others, but not that easily. Distance-wise and for holding greens, these match up well with most any top ball.

By value, the V2s cannot be topped. I personally prefer the Vice Pro, which has about the same score as the V2s, but spins a bit less. Kirkland’s gloves are also fantastic.

This past Christmas my wife gave me a box of 24 of the Kirkland V2's.  I have to admit I would not have purchased them for myself.  However I find I quite like them, and you really cannot beat the price point.

I love the KS v2 but the spin is too much for me off the tee. I'm a higher swing speed, higher spin guy so these things are kind of like golf roulette. I did use them on par 3s and with my high launch angle they would stick impressively well. I've noticed that they've gone missing from the Costco warehouses near me - could a v3 be on the horizon or just an inventory gap?

Rumor has it that anything marked .97 at Costco is code for not coming back.  Just a rumor but I have to wonder why they were marked so low?  Just a few weeks ago they were $27.99.

Another rumor has it, there will be a new yellow ball.

There is a yellow ball on the conforming list.  Costco has had a few balls on the list that never made it to production so let's hope this time we see it in stores.  Even better would be a new 4 piece yellow and white.

There is a reason they are marked .97 and it makes no sense to blow them out unless they are making room for something else.

Music to my ears - I'm a huge fan of the Kirkland ball (along with the golf gloves) so I'd love to see a new ball from them soon!

I have used the Kirkland sand hit them well. However I find that after a second round, they lose a bit of distance. Other better balls (pro V, TP5, or Chrome X) can usually last 3-4 rounds before degrading.
